    Depends what criteria you use.

We tend to top polls on happiness etc, but not public service lists etc.

I'm surprised that we are top though, regardless of the measurement used.

Meh, what people always forget in threads like these is that people in other countries think their countries suck too.

Except the Americans and the French - but they objectively suck.

Thursday night: Went to a mates house had 5 beers and listened to some tunes.

Friday: Finished work. Sister made me dinner. Went to friends and palyed Mario Kart and drank a 6 pack. Went to a night club, drank more. Met other friends, went back to theirs, stopping in a playground for some sliding on the way.

Saturday: Woke up about 10:30, took nurofen. Woke up about half 3. Sister brought me McD's to my apartment. Watched TV on my new projector in bed, girlfriend brought me beer. Got up about 8 for dinner the gf made and went to a house party. Drank and played darts all night.

Sunday: Woke up at some point. Watched movies with gf on projector all day. Made a burger at some point and ate a half tub of Ben & Jerrys.

Sounds like a good quality of life to me.

Monday: Back to work.... No you're right, this is shit.

I'd say we definately, definately live in one of the top 10 countries, probably top 5 and very possibly the best.

    No natural disasters.
No involvement in international nuclear war bullshít.
We have a great abilty (like the British) to laugh at ourselves.
    Lots of national pride.
Extremely generous social welfare system, aswell as real opportunities for social mobility for everybody.
Quite low rate of murder: http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cri_mur_percap-crime-murders-per-capita
Decent enough weather (compared to, say, Bangladesh), where we have mildly cold winters and decent summers.
    Virtually nobody goes hungry.
We're not made to go out and work in a sweat shop when we're 6 years old.
Low taxes in comparison to the other countries that would be competitiors for the title of "country with highest quality of life" ie. the scandinavian countries.

I can think of many more, in fact, I typed all those up without thinking very much.

I love living in Ireland and feel very fortunate to have been born here.

My boxers are hitching up my arse in work and I can't stand up to fix them because it'll look like I've got my hand down my pants.

If this isn't quality of life, I don't know what is.

Do other country's media tell them they suck and don't deserve to be here every day, or is it just ours?

    Spain - Robberies
    Australia - Car Thefts
    Somalia - Pirates
    Uganda - Children
    Bolivia - Brazil Nuts (?!)
    Brazil - Sugar
    Georgia - Library Books?

    etc

granted im sure theres some obscure source that says ireland has the best quality of life... but i respectfully disagree.

ireland is no doubt a first world country and i stand up for it everytime on this forum :D but we are a long way from being the best or even top 5, the scandinavian countries (and i have been to them all) have us beat in every category from public transport to schools to health to things to actually do outside going to the pub at night

I have a devoted girlfriend who I would never raise a hand to (unless she wanted me to ;)).

But now if you mean 'hit' in a more erotic way then some things had to be omitted. My good ladies honour must not be tarnished.

You know your country is in trouble when the thing you are ranked best at is terrorism (Iraq).

Wouldn't be too sure about Taiwan having the best Phalaenopsis Orchids either, I hear Japan's are top class.

Tis a great quality of life here. Today i sauntered down to the dole office signed on, had a stroll around town and a quick lunch followed by a few scoops with a mate then back home where im now indulging in a few cans of Beamish finest porter and all on time to watch North Korea beat Braizil, all hail Kim Jong-il.

I can only speak for myself and the people I know - we have it good, despite all the bitching and moaning some people do on a daily basis! Most of the people I know have their health, a roof over their heads, clothes on their backs and food in their cupboards. For a developed county, the only thing that I would really pull up on is the health service (especially mental health).

    Otherwise, we definitely do not.

    North korea > soldiers

    Iraq>terrorism

This cant be right, China has the worlds largest standing army and they just put iraq down because of american propaganda to take the focus away from the lack of the WMDs

Also namibia isnt even the 3rd largest producer of uranium, therefore this list is bull**** and everyone should ignore it.

I'm sure this has changed in the past few years, but I definitely think this country still has one of the best quality of lifes to offer. In reality we are a fairly sheltered country and are too focused on our own problems to see that we are much better off than a lot, if not the majority of other countries. Things have gone down hill in the past few years, but even at that, Ireland is a still a relatively good place to live.

Part of the appeal and problem with Ireland is our relaxed attitude to everything. To get anything done in the UK you have to jump through all kind of hoops. Your being constantly observed by the law so you just can't relax and that continues on in other countries.

People have an amazing ability to never be satisfied. Those of us from the developed world need to go have a visit to some place like Afghanistan. I just had to get my car re-registered, and I witnessed someone complaining boisterously about having to wait half an hour to register his RV and Mercedes. If that's the worst thing he's got to complain about, he's doing well. Not as if he has to worry about having clean water.

Quantifying quality of life based on these criteria is like quantifying beauty based on measurements: it could well be true, but there is no accounting for taste.
