Apparently it’s not cheating unless you get caught so I have never cheated either.

LOL, great article and quotes. But seriously, it's been going on forever and won't stop for as long as there's one superintendent per 50+ students and the majority of their focus is on their tea and biscuits.

.....The student claimed to have seen students hiding English poetry texts in the school toilets, while others hid notes in socks and jeans. ....

This never went on in MY day before social networking sites and forums and the like. It's them thar infernal computers giving them ideas. I say block their interweb tubes dagblamnit!!!

Indeed, boards is inciting people to write notes on their legs and have notes stashed.
I blame all this cheating on boards. :p

Heard about one guy who had a desktop computer with him when he was doing his exam...

Are they not as strict on cheating over there?

I mean, we're not allowed to talk at all once we're in the exam hall or we'll be disqualified :/

Watch Dara o Briain when he compares irish law to english law. Everything's black and white in england while we revel in the grey.

so basically what the poster mentioned on boards.ie is the exact same thing that went on during the 90's, 80's, 70's etc....ok we didn't have mobiles but notes hidden etc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 497 ✭✭Retrovertigo

I cheated in a few exams back in the day. Had a set of headphones threaded up from a walkman I had hidden in the side pocket of my combats. Spent the night before each exam recording the parts of my notes I felt weakest on.

Wasn't very successful as I can apparently talk far faster than I can write!

Yes, but now the media don't have to actually go anywhere in order to find these stories.
They just log onto message boards and there the stories are, all ready for them.

Its great isn't it, it allows lazy journalists to automtaically mention a source and they have to do little to no research. Normally local papers throughout Ireland and the likes of the sun use boards and don't even mention boards

I cheated in a few tests with small rolled up pieces of paper and tiny writing. Cheating shows initiative. It shows you have the ability to get around a problem.

Haha.. can just picture you now...

In exam.. start tape... rattling out the information while trying to keep up with writing... eventually you snap... "Slow the **** down will ya?.. repeat that last part!" :D

As I said elsewhere, why aren't we looking at the exam supervisers much here?

Expecting everyone to play fair in such a pressurised enviroment is like having a concert with no security or Gardai present. You'll get trouble either way, but a lot more if you're not vigilant.

Exam supervisers could remove the majority of cheating by being seen to be more proactive - spot checks, searches in the likely areas of the school, etc.

If there is mass cheating, it is likely because it is seen as easy to cheat.

Agree with the lazy journalism, do you think anything is actually going to happen? They are hardly going to try to identify the OP on the thread are they?

That would require the collusion of boards.ie itself to release the IP, which they could do as the High Court has ruled it's not private information... But I'm not sure it holds with the ethos of the organization.

I hope not, at least ;)

Cheating makes the most sense, anyone who goes to all the trouble of learning pointless facts and figures that they'll have no use for outside of that one particular exam is a fool.

There is a journalist who writes a colour piece on a Saturday in one of the broadsheets, and the story itself, or a quote from this site is almost always used.

They would have no probes identifying and questioning the OP.

Cheating in a state exam is a criminal offence, the Government can use what ever surveillance powers that are out there even if it involves IP tracking and chasing up the OP's ISP.

All internet correspondence can be held for up to two years under EU / Irish data retention derivatives so the have plenty of time. :p

He was talking about that, having visited Ireland loads I found it hilarious - but I'd have thought with something as serious as exams, it'd still be strict

I mean, in my exams yesterday; there were two years in the hall doing GCSEs. A Year 10's phone went off, I've never seen an invigilator run so fast - she grabbed the kid's phone, picked up her radio and legged it outside. Within a minute, the two exam officers and a few senior staff had come in; and grabbed the kid at the end - I'd imagine he's been disqualified now.

Why can't we be more relaxed?! :(

Definitely! They had no problem identifying the supervisor last year (or the year before?) who leaked English paper II, so why would they have any problem naming and shaming a young man who's just starting out?

Naming and shaming the people in the so called Golden Circle, now that's another story. Actually it wasn't a story at all, because they weren't named and shamed.

My name is Feeona and I suffer from Joe Duffyitis:(

should have had it on silent;)

hey kids out there don't cheat its not worth it, and it usually goes pear shaped anyway

number one: mobile phones in exam hall...disqualification

number two: invigilator scans toilets befor exam and makes them a no go area for other people who might place books

number:invigilator has to pace up and down hall at all times just a garda paces on the beat..dont want to? plenty others will e work

fair play to that girl...she will be a supreme court judge some day:pac:

Its a bit of a non story to be honest. I can't seem them disqualifying someone from their exams without a lot of evidence. Not a few forum posts.

Criminal offence for cheating in the Leaving Cert? Are you sure? I know the Dept of Education can ban people from taking the exams again, but are there other possible penalties?
