Bound to be a few games which don't get the attention they deserve at E3, and hopefully Child of Eden won't be one. New game from Tetsuya Mizuguchi, who of course is responsible for Rez, one of the greatest audio/visual games ever made.

However, there is one considerable thing to note here: it is going to be for PS Move and Kinect, so yup, motion controlled. I'm still very weary of the technology, but having someone as talented as Mizuguchi is a first step towards relevance for this tech!

Ah great, just when Kinetic and Move looked like absolute scutter and not worth wasting money on this comes along and I'm pretty sure it will be a must buy.

    Can't wait.

Also hoping for a worthwhile game from That Game Company. Which will be the last game on their 3 game deal with Sony which will let them, if they choose, go multi-plat and do something great on Kinect too.

Pro-tip: You are "wary" of new technology.
You grow "weary" of bad technology.
    ;)

Yay, a new game from Mizuguchi!

It's the perfect of example of new technology and new ideas being brought together to form new entertainment. The Wii has done well but didn't so much break new territory so much as skim the borderline...this makes me now very interested in Kinect!

    You don't have to. :)
Tetsuya Mizuguchi's latest music-driven "synesthesia" shooter, Child of Eden, made for an exciting kickoff to Ubisoft's pre-E3 2010 press conference. We caught up with the Rez creator following the event to chat about the his Kinect title, and found out that Microsoft's new motion-tracking tech actually won't be required to play.

Mizuguchi answered in the affirmative when we asked if Child of Eden can be played using a standard controller, also confirming that players will experience Rez-like controller vibration synced to the game's music. Given that the Q Entertainment founder went as far as to create the "Trance Vibrator" peripheral for additional, buzz-y feedback for Rez, we asked how he felt (or didn't, as the case may be) about a lack of tactile feedback when playing Kinect titles. "When I play the Kinect, I need some feedback," he replied, adding that vibrating bracelets -- like the Trance Vibrator -- could be used to improve the experience.

And what about a PlayStation Move release of the game? "We haven't decided yet," Mizuguchi responded when the topic was broached. He may not have, but we've decided we want it. How about you?

Just saw that, I'm quite glad really, I get enough standing and moving the rest of my day, game time is couch time.

Good news on the standard controller front, although I always get a bit worried about Mizuguchi's obsession with vibrating devices!

Travelling through airport security must be akward as hell for him.

Game looks nice, this is the kind of stuff we should be getting from motion control, not a bazillion and one fitness games or party-game compilations

    Waitasec waitasec waitasec...

The AI you were rescuing in Rez was called "Eden".

Looks great! Absolutely love Rez. This will be a no brainer.

And yeah, I'm sure there'll be some sort of update to the trance vibrator. Weirdest gaming device ever. As much as I love collecting older used consoles, there's something about a second hand vibrating device which just sounds wrong. No amount of bleach could get that clean.

Also worth mentioning that some of the sound effects in the trailer are exactly the same as Rez. So I think it is safe to say that this is effectively Rez 2 :)

    Bring on the mind ****!

    I noticed that too :)

    TOCK-TOCK-TOCK

Now I want an extended mix of that trailer's music.
*edit* It's apparently a remix of Genki Rockets' "Star Line".

    *edit*

    ALSO:
Child of Eden... Child of EDEN...
    That tree...

Pixeljunk Eden?? Maybe I'm reading too much into it now.

If you play the trailer backwards at three quarters speed exactly, and put the whole thing through a high frequency filter, and then cover your ears with your hands, it kind of sounds like they are saying 'Freeman'.

    Freeman = Half-Life 3!!!

    :P

I'm sure there'll be plenty of Genki Rockets in the soundtrack considering it's Mizuguchi's side project.

Rez is one of my favourite games of all time. Think I'm definitely going to have to get Kinect now.

Bumpity bump. Only a few days to release! Haven't been this excited to play a game in a while. Will be sticking with standard controller for the moment, but word on the street (er..media) is that Kinect works pretty damn well.

This will be the first game Ibuy on day of release in a long time.

    Is it out this week?

Great, I might pick it up so I finally get some use outta Kinect, and if that's too much, back to the controller for me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,586 ✭✭✭Healium

Always thought this was Kinect-only, as did my friend, until a week ago.

Normally a game I'd pass on, but I'm gonna use the €3 Gamestop deal to get this and Alice: Madness Returns

Glad to read that a lot of reviewers preferred playing it using a controller

Only read the Edge review and they liked Kinect but said standard controller was best for high scores and the like (and I think any existing Rez fans will consider high scoring an integral part of the experience!). Said neither was quite perfect though, and it gets very tricky in later levels as a result. Otherwise very positive though.

Oh ffs! I completely forgot this was out so soon. Why do all the games/hardware I want seem to come along at once?!

Heard it's quite a short game

What's the story with Play.com and the exchange rate? It's £32 I think, as opposed to €40, with a free t-shirt. It'd probably cost me €33 to do the 3 game trade in deal at Gamestop. If I bought in sterling, and got delivered to a UK address, would it be about €35? May as well do it that way, and get the t-shirt

Heads up that HMV are now offering a T-Shirt with pre-orders too :)

So T-Shirt and day one copy. Yay! Says 44.99 as the price too on the poster, which tends to be the norm for new releases in HMV.

If it's anything like Rez you'll play it over and over again for the experience before realising that there's even more depth to it due to the very deep scoring mechanics that extend the life of the game even more.

How much are HMV pre orders? I can't miss out on that tshirt! Might preorder OOT 3d too while I'm in there.

Three euro deposit, poster says the game will be 44.99 (standard for HMV these days).

But yeah on-rail shooters like this aren't to be rushed through. It's all about high scores, getting better at each level. It may only take you an hour or two for a full run through but that's not the point. Games like this don't need to be ten hours long. They are all about the experience. That, and frantically trying to top high scores :P

Is it the same t-shirt as Play.com?

It seems to be. Not sure if it's the exact same design, but the HMV one was definitely a black T-Shirt with a graphic in the centre.

So damn excited. Even put together this OP for it on NeoGAF. Reading US impressions and love has me very jealous.

For fans of Q Entertainment (Rez, Lumines, Child of Eden etc), Mizuguichi (director of all those games) will be on the next 8-4 Podcast.

Games looks nuts .. .very psychedelic (never played Rez so don't know what to expect).

Check out the reviews on Amazon.com (has been out there a couple of days). People seem to be genuinely blown away.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,571 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

    Seems to be €45 everywhere.

I got it in HMV - it came with a very nice COE t-shirt.

Doesn't seem to be available for rental in xtravision (I checked 2 local branches).

Gonna wait for this to drop in price a bit. Or trade something and get it on the cheap. As much as i loved Rez, this seems like A) you wont get the msot out of it unless you have kinLOLect, which i am never, ever buying, B) it seems pretty much just like a reskinned Rez in gameplay terms, and C) the music sounds pretty lame compared to the Rez soundtrack
