Without the EV training, as Elekid said the game is perfectly finishable. However, if you plan on doing the Battle Subway, EV training is a huge help here.

There's no need to EV train to finish the main story, it's perfectly doable without it. EV training will make your Pokémon stronger sure but is really only needed for competitive play.

It is possible to erase all EVs from a fully EV trained Pokémon and start again, see post #35 in this thread

Ah, that's good to know - I've just been working away with no regard for what Pokemon I use in fights (aside from trying to keep everything fairly balanced in level and making use of type advantages where I can)

Thanks for the information folks. The game is a lot more complicated than you'd think!

I'm currently wandering around trying to find some pokeymans for the electric gym. I'm very weak for electricity. :(
I guess I'll go seek out some groundy types. They seem to be scarce, don't they? Pure ground types anyway. There's one guy I like the look of, but he is only found in Manic Tunnel and I can't find that so .. *shrug*

    (Sorta doomed)

I was leveling Ponyta to Rapidash cuz I just liked having a horse that could set things on fire. (Yes, I'm shallow)
He's much better nowadays. Much faster. *pets Rapidash*

I'll probably try paying close attention to EV when I'm playing the next game. :)

    LOL, brilliant! :pac:

The entrance to Maniac Tunnel is on Route 214, just south of Veilstone City. If it's Hippopotas you want, it's quite rare unless you go catch a bunch of different Unown from the ruins in Solaceon town first. The more different types of Unown you have, the more common Hippopotas becomes.

I think you can get Sandile (Ground-Dark) in the area leading up to the city with the Electric-type gym.

Or, if you want to go all the way back to Route 3 where the daycare was, Bulbapedia says you can get Drilbur (pure Ground, AFAIK) in the cave there - if you're willing to level it up to an appropriate level.

For the 2nd gym, what would be the minimum level requirement for my pokemon?

I wouldn't rely soley on ground attacks though. The leader has two Electric/Flying types (I think it's two anyway..), so they are immune to ground attacks. Try for a good rock attack too.

Manic Tunnel is in Sinnoh (Diamond/Pearl/Platnium). So I'm guessing the electric gym leader you're referring to is Volkner of Sunnyshore.

If you need ground types for that battle, try going back to Iron Island and hunting down Gravellers, Onix or Steelix. They should help you out with Volkner

There's no minimum, the only limiter is your boredom threshold! (ie how long are you willing to grind for?)
In Gen 5 the 2nd Gym is the Normal one I think, in which case aim to have 'mon with levels 17-20, ideally bringing something that can take a big hit (Roggenrolla or Audino maybe?) 'cause the L20 Watchog is going to cream you otherwise.

Of course, if you don't mind something fainting on you you can just bring something expendable with you, swap it in before the Watchog, who comes out second. He'll use Retaliate which is a devastating STAB attack the first time it's used as it's powered up if a team mate has just fainted. A L15-16 Timbur, which you can catch about 30s walk from the door of the gym, will destroy him as long as he gets at least one good punch/(low)kick in, so use something to soak up the damage, if you can paralyse or sleep him and swap in the Timbur to turn him into a red gooey mess on the floor.

On the subject of EV's, would you guys say it is essential to build EV's effectively to progress through the game and complete the storyline, or would it mainly be for making things a bit easier and/or battling people over WiFi?

Essentially you don't need EV's to progress through the game and it would mostly be for training pokémon a specific way for battling over Wi-fi, however, you could do it if you wanted while still progressing through the story to make your pokémon better
    Robby91 wrote: »
I've been a bit confused by the concept of IV's and EV's (EV's improve the growth rate of stats for the Pokemon?) and all this talk about them is getting me worried that I would have to build up EV's well if I want to be able to complete the game :o

Also, if you do manage to mess up your EV training greatly, is there any way to reset the EV's or is it a matter of catching the same Pokemon again (where possible) and leveling/EV training all over again?

There are certain berries that will lower your EV's in certain stats
Pomeg berry = -10 HP EV's (or if your EV's are anywhere over 100 they will be lowered straight to 100 upon use)
    Tamato Berry = - 10 Speed EV's
    Kelpsy Berry = - 10 Attack EV's
    Qualot Berry = -10 Defense EV's
    Grepa Berry = -10 Special Defense EV's
    Hondew Berry = -10 Special Attack EV's

Makes me miss playing Pokemon Blue when I was younger, where the only things I was aware of in the game were catching Pokemon and battling :pac:

Ah yes, they were simpler times

    Hope that helps!

Edit: Whoa jesus i was a bit late with this one altogether :P

I'd love to get a Zoura.

Can any of you guys recommend a way to get the faithful encounter celebii, legit or otherwise?

Catch one of us at a meet-up for trades :p

Failing that, talking to the girl in the Game Freak building in Castella City adds Zorua's image to the Pokedex, use this to hunt a Zorua down on the GTS

Think I still have a spare one on my Japanese cart if you're around a low-security WiFi in the evenings after 10pm ish. May not be on this evening but probably tomorrow or sunday...

Can't help you with the Celebi unfortunately. They're expensive. Have you seen the price of a milkshake in Eddie Rockets?

I was breeding them, so I've got like 14 spares. Meetups!

How the feck do you catch Mesprit? I've been chasing the jerk around for ages. I'm bored!

My tactic is usually go to a place between 2 routes, go back and forth between the two. Eventually, it'll arrive in one of the routes. Spray on a repel, and have a pokemon above the normal levels of the 'mon in that route, but below the level of Mesprit (level 50). This makes it certain that Mesprit will be the encounter. Then bang a Master Ball at it, and done. If you don't have a Master Ball, best bet would be to try a Quick Ball or something, though it'll probably take a few goes.

UGH! Can't I just dig a hole, put an apple in it and wait? (pokemons like apples, right?)

    Forget the master ball.

Mean look, false swipe, sleep powder, run and a fast ball on the next encounter.

Works for all the runners really.

I've caught up with the jerk twice, and Mean Looked right off the bat and he just flees before my pokemon can look at him in a mean way. I guess I need a faster pokemon...

I like this one. It generally picks up on errors with mixed in EVs. I find it easier to use that other ones

If I was training up a team in Fire Red with a view to taking on all the E4s in Red,Green,Emerald,HG,SS,Diamond,Pearl,Platinum,Black and White, what team of 6 from the original 151 should I go with?

I gave up on Mesprit, if I stumble across him, I stumble. Sick of him fleeing. I just want to imprison him in a small ball and never let him out, I don't know what the big problem is.

I'm working on my National Pokedex to entertain me while levelling my dudes for the Elite 4.
Any tips for catching Rotom? Does he flee or faint easily? If I accidentally faint him, can I have another go?
Also, does anyone in the game have a Togekiss I can have a look at instead of hauling Togepi around for ages?

I might have a Togekiss, and if you need one to fill the 'dex, I think I have a Mesprit too..

    I have mespit as a 'seen' so it counts. I can't connect my game to someone elses so I can't see yours ;_;
I mean a trainer or someone in game who has one so I can have an ogle.
Shame that "But I googled it" doesn't count for the Prof :(

Bah. I gave the Elite Four a go and got my ass handed to me by Mr. Psychic.
And I think I sold my shiny stone to buy drugs so I can't evolve Togepi.

What sort of level is recommended for Cynthia? She has an odd mix of pokemans and moves. Shame I can't go change pokeymans after the Elite 4. D:
