Belgium Now on the Road to Break Up

It now looks like the country of Belgium will be breaking up and splitting into two - the Dutch speaking, wealthy Flanders to the North and the poorer, French speaking Wallonia to the South.

The big problem is Brussels - even though geographically it lies just inside Flanders, it is predominantly French speaking.

So, what do AHers make of this?

Why can't they just stay as one country?

Sometimes Dean, a Mommy (flanders) and a Daddy (Wallonia) just don't get along anymore and want to live in their own houses. It's nothing you did, and they both love you very much. You'll live with Flanders during the week and Wallonia will collect you every second weekend.

This sounds like a load of *waffle to me!:P

*Belgian waffleis a type of waffle identified by its larger size, lighter batter and higher grid pattern which forms deep pockets and has larger squares.

Not going to happen... simply put. It's not as dramatic as the papers state, it won't split into two seperate countries, it will stay the same. They may have a slight restructuring of certain eliments, but Belgium, will stay as is ;)

Sure theres nothing in Belgium except chocolate and buildings....

I grew up in Dublin. I love Dublin. If I grew up on a farm, and was retarded, Bruges might impress me but I didn't, so it doesn't. - Ray - In Bruges

Those Northern Belgians might be southern Nederlanders pretty soon, spreading their 'soft g' all over Holland.....

So what does this mean for the Belgian football team qualifying for the world cup? Two teams? One team? A merger with Holland...?

And out before the lock because we're talking about....

Belgium released some great stuff early in their career but I kinda lost interest during their mid-period. I wonder if they do break up will we see a Flanders solo project any time soon?

Most of their stuff is mediocre, it was like they couldnt decide if they were a poor man's holland or france, and as for that collaboration with germany, jesus.

You obviously haven't heard the sessions they recorded for John Peel with Andorra. Genius.

Do you like Wolonia? I've been a big Belgian fan ever since the industial revolution. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their output. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was during the industrial revolution where Wolonia's presence became more apparent. I think their use of natural mineral resourses was the country's undisputed masterstroke.
