So last visit to physio this morning and clear to begin some light jogging in the next few days. New frigging orthotics to break in so was under strict instructions to walk this evening and nothing else.

Emmm so I walked from the car to the gym and back again...does that count??

Easy session on the bike and cross-trainer and plenty of stretching and squats.

Just finished with the foam roller there and jaysus it's not fun...ITB and quads in particular :(. Chanted the mantra...pain is temporary!

Thanks for posting on my thread Shaz!

Just reading over the last few pages of yours. I can't believe how committed you have been even through injury. Keep it up. Hope your run on Friday works out for you!

Thanks Dollie, hope the run works out too or I'll be a very disappointed bunny. But not the end of the world if it doesn't!!

Nother evening in the gym.....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Seriously bored of it now especially coz it's perfect running weather and my ipod is broken so no toonz to distract me.

Bike, followed by strenghtening exercises, weights and cross-trainer.

By the time I got on the cross-trainer, I was bored out of my tree so decided to vamp it up. Put it on the highest level (25) for a min then reduce by odd numbers...1 min at 23, then 21 etc then back up on the even nums 2, 4, 6 etc and back up to 24 and then back down on odd to round it off. I will admit I nearly died at the higher resistances, bloody hell - on the up side quad was fine :)

Rest tomorrow and will try a light jog on Friday...

Not far wrong there Dollie, why I do these things I will never understand!! But sure we all have moments of madness :D

The strangest thing happened this eve, the time spent on the foam roller this eve didn't result in yelps/curses of pain. It was actually bearable...Could this be a good omen for tomorrow's attempt at a return :)

best of luck tomorrow Shazkea. Take it easy and listen to your body and you'll be back up to speed in no time!

Right so the planned return to running was a flop. Managed about 45 seconds before I had to admit defeat. Result was a dramatic strop in the changing rooms, which were thankfully empty so no-one saw :o!! I also vowed to give up running for good and never again lace up a pair of runners. Way OTT I know! Then threw my running gear into the shed never to be seen again and headed west for the weekend.

Emm so while out west I met up with friends who had just signed up for Barcelona in March - cue me saying great idea, where do I sign up! So have just booked my flights to Barca for March 6th. Jaysus here we go again.

So excel sheet prepped and ready to go for Hals 30 week marathon plan!!

Sat is def out so focus now is half in Sept and then make a call on DCM. No way I'll do a good time but may employ a run/walk strategy for it but focus on Barcelona for a good time. After all it would be a shame to waste my money for DCM :)

So next couple of weeks will be spent on serious cross-training and getting bod prepped for 30 weeks of running!!!

Runners rescued from shed this morning for this eve's session

Wow... talk about being suckered in!?:p

    Seriously, Barcelona is great.
Was there (supporting) with my OH this year and it's a fab city. The marathon is right through the centre and starts and finishes in front of the palace - really picturesque! You'll have a ball!!

Suckered is a great word for it and I didn't even have a drop of alcohol in me when I agreed to do it so can't blame that!

Great that you were over there so can plague you with questions :D - what was weather like, slightly concerned it will be fairly warm!

Also is course relatively flat - preferred answer to that is yes obviously!

Lastly any good recommendations for places to stay?

So was telling my Mum about plan to do Barcelona - her response was "why would you want to do that when you can't even get through training for the Dublin one"
Very logical point but fortunately (or maybe unfortunately) I rarely listen to the voice of reason!! Gotta love the support though :D

Gym session last night mainly focusing on stretching and strength. Core strength is rubbish so looking to start pilates next week to help with that.

    Planned cardio session tonight.

The other side of it is that you have time now to build up a stronger base and do a lot of strengthening work before Barcelona training starts - so you would probably have a better shot at Barcelona. It's a race I'd love to do sometime, and not just because I'd like to combine it with a trip to the Nou Camp for a match :D

Thanks RK, I will pass that sensible and supportive logic onto my Mum :)

Now why did you have to go and mention the Nou Camp, gonna have to check that out now!!

Gym session this eve and a good cardio workout on bike and xtrainer. Now that I made decision not to focus on DCM, I seem to be able to push myself more. Probably because I am not paranoid about injuring leg again!

Rewarding myself with some choccies biscuits, having green tea instead to balance it out ;)

Will be back off choc on Monday as there is no point starting in the middle of the week!!

Is that a marathon? Like a whole 26.2 miles? Lol...I might leave it to the pros like you! I'm behind you all the way though!!

A few days since I updated here mainly because I can only think of so many ways to write about gym sessions. :) So here's the short version... Wed, Thur and Fri gym sessions. Sat and Sun spent wasting any good time spent in the gym at a wedding and a certain GAA match!

Kick ass session in the gym with instructor this eve. First time using kettle bells - brilliant but think I may be slightly dangerous with those in hand!!

Will attempt a run tomorrow eve because I think the stiffness I'm expecting in all other muscles will far out-weigh any pain in the quad muslces :D.

Now 4 weeks off running - fook... that's way too much and am having no more of it - after all there's a half marathon to be run (or at least jogged slowly!!)

Take your 4 weeks off - enjoy the cross training, cycling, weights, kettlebells, yoga - everything and anything. Your body will thank you for it. You'll be far stronger in other ways when you get back to it. I was just reading over my log from when I was off my feet a couple of months ago. I think it was 6 weeks with no running whatsoever and I was frustrated to hell but then I just sucked it up and made up my mind to keep the fitness in other ways and I do think it really paid off. Get a bike, enter a Duathlon... You should definitely think about the Duathlon series for next summer. And now is a perfect time to try out the cycling! Also I ended up having to walk the mini marathon which wasn't the plan - I know it's nowhere near a half marathon but it wasn't the end of the world and there'll be plenty more. You have Barca to look forward to now! Best of luck with the recovery. :)

Cheers Claralara - really appreciate the support. I'm absolutely blaming you for this but def going to look at the Duathlon's next year :D. I was actually in looking at bikes lately - any suggestions for what kind to go for?

Call me stubborn, stupid or mad (or all of those) but not quite ready to give up on half or DCM yet! I know my times will be crap but am determined to get over the finish for both whether that's running or walking or a combo of both! Sure it'll be good practice for Barca . Anyone know what time the DCM course closes at :p

There's an 8 hour time limit for DCM, it's quite generous.

Wow that is good, thought it would be 6. My new goal is now 07:59 - that should be more achievable than the sub 4:30 I had originally in mind :D

At least go sub-7:45 to beat that annoying little UCDSU guy who did it last year with no training :pac: (link)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,090 ✭✭✭shazkea

Plan this eve was to attempt a run - failed miserably at the last attempt after 45 seconds so wasn't holding out too much hope.

Hopped on the bike to warm up for 10 mins - at 09:59 had a panic attack - what if I fail again, what if I re-injure myself, yaddie yadda - so added another 5 mins to calm myself down :o

Felt like I was lining up for the DCM itself I was so nervous, stupid I know. Anyway stepped onto threadmill and took off. 2 miles later I had a huge grin on my face and decided to quit whilst I was ahead. No point in rushing come-back after all it is "a marathon and not a race". Sorry couldn't resisit!

So after 32 days not running 2 mile jog complete - and it felt really good :D

Oh that's brilliant - was cracking up reading that. Right new target set at sub 7 - don't even want to be in the same hour zone as him
