    Hello,

As tetra is going to be rolled out to all emergancy services in the next few years , Do people think it's a good idea ?

I think the AGS should deffinatly have it but im not to sure about the other services. The government has no money now and the Radios that are in most fire/ambulance vechicls are perfect and worth a lot of money .

In England as it is tetra has been turned off in some area's due to officer getting sick becuase of radioation from the handhelds having them on there chest. From 'Radio User' Mag:
"It's been reported that Lancashire Police officers are prepairing to sue their own force over a series of illnesses they claim were caused by tetra radio system they use while out on patrol. The Lancs constabulary was the first in Britian to try out the Airwave Tetra network. Now nine years later scores of officers are claimimg radation emissions cause them to suffer headache, nausia, stomach pain and skin rash."

There are a couple of other options they could have got but no.

Hears What the Motorola Tetra radios Look like.

i don't know about the fire brigade but, in some regions, the ambulance service radios are rubbish.

    messenger pigeons would be better.

bring on tetra!!! (or anything better).

While I will allow this to go on....can members of AGS be mindful that no operational information or information of a sensitive nature should be given out on the forum.

Breach of this instruction will be deal with harshly.

    You have been forwarned.

I suppose it could be a bit better but the simoco radios are way better than the old philips radios .

The radios are the finest...it's the system they are attached to is the weak point. Roll on Tetra!

I think the new RRV are tetra ready !! The one small aireal will be a bit better of 4 on the ambo.

Even the system in the Amblance Stations are prity bad unlike the Fire service who get a faily good print out.

I see from the OP's post that the Tetra motorola radios are worn on the shoulders. I'm just wandering if Gardaí currently carry around bricks of radios on their waistbelt at the moment or is it similer to the one in the pic?

They are very light compaired to older radios. Little bit heavier than an iPhone. They should be worn by all on the chest.

Number of reasons, health reason is the main IMO, its like a mobile phone at the end of the day, but worse, constant signal being recieved and discharged. Over time that would have an affect on the man bits and tadpole count if you were to have it on the belt. And you can get shortened wire for earpieces without the push to talk on ebay if you really were pushed....

hopefuly nobody will be harmed with the system.
But if it's going to cause this kind of trouble why did they choose it ?

There are scientist who belive tetra will kill more lives than terrorists in the next 20years.

Money talks - big business wins, Tetra here regardless of health concerns to the little man...

Wouldnt it be better to cook the tadpoles than the ticker?

Bull**** !!!. Radio system in the MW has been **** for years :mad:, likewise the same story with other regions in the NAS. Tetra is the only way to go especially in light of the fact that they are closing all the control rooms around the country & having one in the East to cover the whole country.

If you read the other posts, I have said the radios are good and they are ! Its the system thats bad all the repeaters are what make it bad.

When 4g hits Ireland it would make more sense for the emergency services to use that for communication, piggybacking off of the commercial networks, I'm sure the government could easily put free state use into the terms and conditions of the licences.

4g would be able to handle voice-over-IP so that's radio's taken care of and data so AGS members could access the pulse system easier.

All would be needed is encryption.

Now I'm only a Tech head not a member of AGS or any other emergency service but to me this solution makes a lot more sense, as it would be less harm full then Tetra due to the way it works.

    TN,
I have read the other posts. Thanks but I already know the system is bad. I've worked with it for long enough. Simoco aren't neccessarily the best radio on the market either. Problem is that the service contract for the ambulance service is only monday to friday 9 to 5 so if something happens to the system outside these hours we're on our own. All systems will have inherent safety risks including Tetra but from an insider's point of view it's light years ahead of what we have. The small aerial on the ambulance rrv's is for the AVLS system. Ambulances have these too.

and thats exactly why it will never happen .. took them nearly 20 years to get a radio that works let alone one that will help us be more efficient... common sense and ease for the people using they system have no place in management strategy

i dont think tetra is all it is hyped up to be for instance the coverage is going to be a major issue outside of town environs the old vhf system for instance the handhelds use 4/5watts depeneding on model of radio the mobiles in car use 25watts, tetra handhelds only use 1watt and mobiles 9/10watts for health reasons. The system is changing from a vhf to uhf system great for dublin city limerick etc uhf can cut through buildings easier while vhf is more susceptible to bouncing of a building i can see in the likes of mayo and donegal this system having major downfalls , i know for instance in monaghan not all garda stations have tetra antennas one station in particular which covers a rural region has had its antennas removed, now i know alot of high sites are being used similar to the systems the ambulance and fire service use but i think its going to be a trial and error system untill black spots are mapped and addressed if at all!! personnally an encrypted vhf system using masc what the psni previously used (cannot be cracked) would have made more sense and cost less money if used with high sites and interlinked but were talking bout the irish government after all:rolleyes: the camp fire service system is completely outdated and useless it was outdated even before it was installed..

Tetra has no probs operating in the hills of South Dublin & Wicklow, areas where the old system was useless. It works fine.
