I'm very out of shape, but have started to correct it via a radical change in my diet [based on expert advice] and getting off my ass and exercising a few times a week.

Reading posts here something which comes up again and agian is people saying you need lots of sleep. I must say Im a bit lost on this point, apart from the obvious nature of sleep helping you rest and recover from a hard day what is the big impact of sleep for people looking to get into shape?

Im pretty good sleep wise, getting 8 hours a night pretty much every night, but just really wondering why...

About 8 hours a night is perfect, the more time you can get before 12am the better.

Sleep's important because it's when your body repairs itself after training and exercise. Not enough sleep = inadequate recovery.

RE: 8 hours... I typically sleep in 4 hour cycles. 1 hour going to sleep, 2 hours deep sleep, 1 hour waking up. If ya wake up in one of the deep sleep periods you wake up REALLY fcuking tired. So two of the 4 hour cycles is 8 hours!

Its basically about hormone regulation. Cortisol and leptin IIRC.
but I also read too much can have negative effects and that the optimal is about 6 -7 hours.

Not something you really need to worry about, I think its one of them things that if your training and your diet is right, your sleeping patterns are going to fall into place naturally.
