Most comfortable car you've driven?

I'm thinking of changing my car at the end of the year. I'm tall - 6'4" and spend a lot of time in the car so comfort is going to be a priority for me and my aching back.

Just got me wondering.. in an era of sportiness and hard suspension, what's the most comfortable car you've owned/ driven?

A Lexus LS400 a few years ago - absolute mile muncher. I test drove a SAAB 95 a few years ago which was very nice too.

I guarantee you my 1997 Laguna is better. After 200,000 miles too!! :p

For me - Volvo S40 but any big car would be comfortable.
Maybe you should consult someone about getting a special seat or some special back pillow or something?

I think that the more upright you sit the better but that's me, I like the van/truck driving position when you sit like on a kitchen chair almost.

I used to drive a 156 and loved it. Didn't give my back gip either, or maybe because I was younger at the time.

If you can get your knees lower than your hips its better for your back and makes it easier on your body while driving.

I've a Saab 93. Nice to drive in but had problems with my back until I was told the above

Funny but it is far easier to remember the most uncomfortable - Nissan Serena.

Probably the back seat of a 1998 Merc S-class.

I have been driving a 03 s40 for the last while, switched to me wife's Mondeo at the start of the year cause the Volvo was doing my back no favours at all.

I've looked at the proper seats but I change cars regularly enough so can't really see the value in putting one in only to rip it out in 18 months time.

Was thinking perhaps something higher end but a little older like a 06 Lexus GS450h or a Merc CLS.

Which usually means raising the seat in your car. For me that puts my eyeline above the windscreen so I hunch over to see out and get upper back instead of lower back pain.

BMW X5 4.4 V8, owned it for a year and i loved it!
comfy, had all the options that you would ever need and had power when required also.

although the running costs are that little bit higher :D

On my third Saab 9-5 now, soo comfortable, but still has a bit of go when needed. Always smile a little when I get out of it after a cross country mile munch, fresh and relaxed. That is why saab drivers have that smile!

    99 Honda Accord.

I think Honda had a deal with Reid Furniture back in the late 90's, fitted mighty comfortable lounge chairs in the back of them.

The ST I currently have, I cant get over how comfortable the seats are!

    Cant beat the recaros! :D

What I came in to say as well. Driving to work in the morning was like getting back into bed!

Also my mothers old Volvo 340. My lord the seats in that thing were out of this world...!

I found the 01 and then 06 Merc E-classes I had for a few days while my car was being serviced to be very comfy! Bit like driving a barge though with very slow pickup from zero - unlike my 2L TDI DSG Passat which pushes you back nicely into the (also very comfy) seats when you put the foot down! :D

    BMW 5-Series (E39)

    M5-5.jpg

I'm 6'3" and do around 500-600 miles a week in one, it's more comfortable than my couch at home.

Yeah, I had some pleasure of having a W140 1996 S600 Lang for a test drive last year. Hard to find anything as comfortable as this one and so fast at the same time (never mind a reasonable price tag).

an old Austin Princess, that was comfy, a Renault Laguna, nice and comfy but unreliable, after that, I reckon the Range Rover

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,616 ✭✭✭TomMc

I'd say a C6 would be one of the most comfortable. A Jag XJ would probably be one of the best blends of comfort and luxury, yet still be a drivers car.

My top two would be a 1986 VW Transporter, slow heavy and thirsty but the seating position is so far second to none to any other of the many, many cars I've owned in my life, except maybe the Transit Connect I had last year, either may be a bit impractical;)
After that is has to be the 1984 W123 Merceds 200 I owned, it had THE most lazy autobox I have ever seen in my life.
Right now driving an 06 Ford Focus Cmax and despite being a bit of a mammy wagon I find it comfy, reasonably nippy, good on backroads (that Focus suspension is great) and it does about 51 mpg, so not too dear to run and the stereo is quite good.

I would second that, that's why I'm on my third one now :D
The current one trumps all though since it had the Saab seats installed.

Having owned two Saabs (900 + 9000) I'd have to give them honorary second

Volvo S80 was the most comfortable i've ever sat in. I didn't drive it mind you. Most comfortable i ever drove was a Renault 19 i think, pity the electrics in them always go haywire.

The most comfortable car I have ever driven was a 1981 Mercedes Benz 300D.

The most comfortable vehicle to drive is a big truck.

    Range Rover without a doubt.

So its not sporty - but my god is it a relaxing car to drive. Its soothing and you arrive at your destination refreshed.

Only thing though is entry if you have a bad back :(

Edit: Just noticed this is my 1000th post - for some reason I'd imagined it being a bit more controversial or humorous!

had a reno laguna, very comfortable car but the electrics were bad , it could let me down, anytime, anywhere, only kept it a year, the leather seats in my bmw 320d are also very comfortable and i suffer with my back

Current E38. Every single car i've gotten into since in the last 2 years is like sitting in a tin can.

I drive Sligo to Cork reguarly and when I had a 406, I would do the 200 mile journey without any bother to my back. The seats were surprisingly soft and supportive at the same time

A 1993 Fiat Tempra very comfortable car, (fcukin want to be the amount of time I sat sitting in it waiting for a mechanic or a tow truck to arive:()

It is like driving while sitting in your comfy chair in your sitting room. Very relaxing and you drive accordingly :)

Citroen Xantia, or really any citroen with hydropneumatic suspension. Nothing comes close. You have to wonder why bently and rolls royce used the same system, right down to using citroen parts :)

    Saabs are pretty decent too

    I will second that...
Air suspension works a treat, and whatever the speed it feels little more than 20mph.

You can hit the biggest of speed bumps at over 40mph and theres a thud but it's still more comfortable than a smaller car going over at 5mph.
People think your mad, but the car is built to take it... try it! you will be surprised it wont fall apart.

    I'm torn between a GS450H and a 530D...

    Probably the Lexus

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,739 ✭✭✭BigEejit

    VW Transporter
2001 Honda Accord (pain in the arse to get into though if you have a bad back)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,751 ✭✭✭✭For Forks Sake

Any Saab just for the quality and comfort of the seats.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,529 ✭✭✭TJJP

Plus 1 on the Citroen. Best ever would be most any BMW 7 series or Merc S-class. Year 2007 on Merc S-320 CDi in particular. For comfort Subaru's are, strangely, worth a look too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 216 ✭✭drakshug

Any Volvo once you have the seats adjusted. Took a month to find the best combo for the s40 but only cos the sears adjust everywhere. They also give excellent side support and don't sag. Best I've ever had.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,686 ✭✭✭JHMEG

    LS600h too.

My Accord Coupe was pretty comfy - big electric American leather seats with lumbar support

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 98 ✭✭kurant

LS430 biggest number of seat adjustments.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,382 ✭✭✭Fishtits

Another vote for the E39 5 series (SE trim with leather), almost too comfy.

    Volvo S80 is also excellent.

LS400 on air had a very comfy chassis but the seats were crap, you sat on them rather than in them, I found it uncomfortable. It also handled like a milk float.
