I'm a mac user and have just bought a Pay as you go Huawei E5830 on the 3 network. I want to change the wifi password on the device so I have Bootcamp running Windows XP and Vista when trying to launch the 3 software on the device I get NSIS Error on both Windows XP and Vista.

See link below with the exact error message, I'm not an experienced PC user so unsure what this means, please help!!

Will it not work under OSX?, i've no idea how your going to get that running and I doubt Apple or Microsoft will help.

I think the Mifi Address is 192.168.1.1 , you should be able to change the password from there.

Failing that You could try huawei support, http://support.huawei.com/support/index.jsp?colID=ROOTENWEB|CO0000000169

can you get wifi working under windows bootcamp and log into the modem using 192.168.1.1
Really interested to see how you get on with this problem, sorry couldn't be of more help.

Can't you connect the MiFi to the Mac by cable and change it that way? I don't remember exactly what I did but it worked for me long ago and I don't have windows.

However: if you change the firmware to the one available from brightspot.co.uk you can then access the settings via wifi at 192.168.1.1

Cheers for the reply Drunkmonkey, need all the help I can get. Doesn't seem to support Mac OSX, I know the 3 USB dongles have a piece of software for connecting as I've used it before, however the Mifi device seems to only support Windows XP and Vista. Tried your suggestions both tethered and untethered to the device.

culabula if you have any insight into how you got it working I'd really appreciate it.

Below are some screenshots of the device contents when it mounts on my mac.

Yes. The supplied software is windows-only. However, I don't think that impacts on your ability to log into 192.168.1.1 using the supplied cable. The problem is logging in over wifi until you update the firmware.

Tried that both on Mac and Bootcamp with cable connected, no joy, hangs for a while and says connection timed out.

The think I annoyed about is on their site it says its mac compatible, so I assumed it would have a piece of software similar to the USB dongles.

Was just onto 3/Huawei tech support, got a operator who didn't even know what a mac was!! Anyways they put me onto someone else who said that its not possible to access the device through a Mac or even Bootcamp, what a load of ar$e.

Is there anywhere in town that will unlock this device to use any sim and install the firmware to access via 192.168.1.1 on the mac?

I mean under OSX. Don't bother with bootcamp.

It doesn't need the supplied Windows software and it is Mac-compatible, in that it works with Mac. However, it might be an idea to have a Mac-driver installed in your system, available from their site, for connection by cable.

You can unlock it for free on the web, then update the firmware so that it is web-manageable over wifi. Stand by for links.

You have Bootcamp, I presume that means running XP on the Mac?

Unlock the device using DC-Unlocker: http://www.dc-unlocker.com/

Or unlock it yourself using software from here:

    http://www.zibri.org/2010/05/e5830-free-unlock-released.html

    ---

Firmware with Admin Panel is available here:

    http://blog.brightpointuk.co.uk/huawei-e5-e5830-e5832-imo-firmware-update-available

All the above have to be with Windows.

    ---

One bug which I was a victim of.. if you 'Reset' the Mifi using the buttons on the unit itself, back to the 3 defaults. The Admin panel stays, but the password seems to reset itself to something other than what you set it as, meaning, you're locked out of the unit's Admin Panel.

I had to downgrade the firmware, then upgrade again, to have 'admin:admin' again, for me to change..

    Just a heads up.

    ---

Do I have to mention some or all of the above involves risk, risk of bricking your unit etc..

Edit: culabula pipped me to the post.

Now that I think of it, I think the first time I configured it was after setting it up in a cybercaff, using Windows. Once I did that, I could connect any of my Apple devices to it via Wifi with my own password.

Using a cable, OSX recognised it as an ethernet modem and it worked without configuration, really, really well. I think however, that I had a Huawei driver lurking in my system from various Huawei dongles.

Then I unlocked it and changed the firmware to the following available from brightpoint. Now I can webmanage it and change APN at will.

You can buy the 5830 unit for around €60 in the UK ( from 3 dealers) or €90 here ( from 3 direct) with an entry level PAYG data package thrown in.

What is it like as a simple domestic wifi unit once unlocked/debranded and with upgraded firmware ......anybody ??

Not as good as Edimax, Netgear, Dlink, Dovado, etc. Intended as a personal "on to go" WiFi travel adaptor for one user.

These kind of products handy for a Gadget that can't take a 3G dongle, such as Zune, iTouch, Archos 605WiFi etc.

if you haven't unlocked etc yet, I think it was by installing mobile partner that I was able to configure it and use as an ethernet modem before I went the unlocking and firmware route.

Okay guys a little update, thanks culabula and amalgam for all your help really appreciate it.

Got a loan of a friends PC laptop to see if I could install the software from there, funny thing is I got the exact same NSIS Error I originally got when running on windows XP in bootcamp.

I then installed and ran DC-Unlocker on on the PC Laptop and it said "card not found" also tried running the online unlock and it just didn't do anything.

I'm getting a funny feeling I have a faulty device?

Just a few questions, sorry to state the obvious and not being funny but....

    You have charged it?
You have definitely turned it on?

No worries, sometimes the simplest solutions are always the best :D

Yes I did the full 12 hour recommended charge and have been successfully using it on WIFI since day one. I wanted to change the WIFI password to something I would remember, hence wanting to access the devices settings.

I maybe I'm missing something but it says to keep the device off when plugging it into your machine, although I've tried it both ways an it always successfully mounts onto my machine. Just when I try to run the software I get the NSIS Error, so as I've said using DC-Unlocker and the web unlock, which leads me to the conclusion there maybe a fault in the device, however I'm just guessing.

I seem to recall that I had to remove the SIM when unlocking, otherwise I got errors.

3 should swap it out for you without issue, though. They swapped the battery for me and it was my mistake.

Pretty sure that if you install that Mobile Partner software for Mac, that you will then be able to access the management page via cable. I had something else too, which worked, hang on....

Yes, i found this for Mac too, which gave me some access to the functionality (but could not be configured for irish ISPs).

Is the Huawei's virtual drive visible?

As in, the drive that contains the software and device drivers.

DC-Unlocker needs the device drivers installed as far as I know. It will then see the device.

Yes the drive mount on my desktop, I did screenshots of the content back in post 4, it also mounted on the PC Laptop prompting me to run the 3 software however I get the NSIS error, you can also see the drive in My Computer, but DC unlock can't seem to see it.

Bizarre is the word, been using macs for over 10 years and never has this much hassle over a device. Yes that's the first thing I did as most mac apps need to be moved to the hd before installing.

Might try it in work tomorrow, we have power pc running 10.4. If that don't work I'll bring it into 3 to see if it's the device.

    Will post back results.

So I brought back the WIFI modem to 3 this morning, I told the guy I was having problems and he didn't believe me. so he tried for himself and low and behold the "NSIS error" appeared. So I got a new one.

Will try out tonight and post back. Just thinking now I should got him to test it before I took it away :(

culabula I tried to install the two programs you sent me on some machines in work, we have a Powermac G5 and an Imac Intel both running 10.5.8, got the same errors unfortunately. Thanks for your help anyway.

Okay don't laugh but I think I got another dud.

I have successfully installed the Mifi software/driver etc. and am no longer getting the NSIS error. I was feeling a little cocky so I decided to do the web unlock from Zibri which was successful (I think, it went through the process and said unlock at the end).

I then decided to do the update the Firmware with Admin Panel from Brightpointuk.

This is where the problem started the software said it could not find the Data card. So I decided to launch the 3 Connect software, I got an error and it said something like problem connecting to device, redial or cancel.

I rang 3 tech support to see if I was just been stupid, spent over an hour trying to get it working, and the guy seemed to know his stuff. I'm worried now since I unlocked it, if I bring it into 3 they will know.

I appreciate everyones help on this, especially culabula and to give back a little bit I found some applications/drivers for Mac OSX below, including Mobile Partner & Data Unlock (whatever that is). There is also some on there for windows.

culabula, any links? ..might it be the same unit Vodafone have for sale? I was mooching about in one of their stores and noticed their one button unit. Not Huawei, as far as I can tell.

    ---

akadesign, just to get back on topic, I have found the Mifi to be stable on XP. Vista and Windows 7 sometimes act silly buggers, deciding if and when to recognise the unit, drivers installed or not.

..with various Huawei units, not just the Mifi, If you install the device drivers on one particular USB port, a change to another port can cause the computer to act a bit stupid, until a reboot (or two..). On a certain Windows 7 laptop I had access to, this problem was persistent.

Yes seems to be an issue with drivers, the tech support guy mentioned that also, we tried various steps to turn off drivers for USB ports and just focus on one. I will try to get my hands on a PC running XP and see if the problem persists. Cheers.

No, it's Huawei all right. Looks nice. Designed based on feedback from customers. New interface ON DEVICE will even tell you when SMS have come in. Just hoping the battery life will be even longer.

    Same price of 49GBP.

Ill seek out the links again.

hiya just got a mifi to try out from phone shop in dingle as signal isnt great where i live in Lispole he said to try this and see if signal is better running imac os 10.6.4
is there a special way to install device as can see from your posts you had trouble?
    many thanks
if this doesnt work have to go to kerry broadband :(

It makes no difference. Get Broadband.
The MiFi is a Travel Adaptor 3G to WiFi for Gadgets. Not a home Broadband solution.

is there a special way to install device

Mifi is a wireless router. Your OS and computer is irrelevant, you connect to it using a wireless network card. If you don't have that in your computer, then Mifi is useless to you.

As watty says, it won't make any improvement anyway. The idea is that you put the modem in a place where the signal is strongest, like upstairs, at a window, wherever the best 3G signal can be found. You then connect your computer to that using the wireless network.

Send it back as it was probably miss-sold to you.
