The physical signs of aging

Are any of you experiencing the atrocity that is getting older on a physical level? Which parts of you aren't what they used to be?

I'll be 27 in September and I'm gaining grey hairs at at alarming rate. Both sides of my head are about 35% grey at this stage.. it's frightening.. I look like a pale, pikey José Mourinho. My knee isn't the May West either, injured it years ago and didn't take any notice of the residual pain until recently.. it hurts when it rains.. that saddens me deeply, I remember my granny saying her hip used to be sore while it rained. I even bought a pair of those curved walking shoes to see if they help.. not long now 'til the peace of the grave

    So are you feeling older?

I've had grey hairs for ages, but I don't look my age. People tell me I look way younger

My knees also hurt when the weather changes... and this is Ireland, so go figure. But it's been like that since I was a kid

And hangovers. It takes me a week to recover, and then you are ready for the weekend :D

As a woman of 26 I found it alarming how much I've aged over a year. I even posted a thread on here last year how annoying it was to get asked for I.D at 25!! Oh how young and foolish I was.

In the past year, what I've really noticed is my whole face seems to have dropped, less fat on my cheeks- older looking. My neck looks scrawnier, and my eyes just look alot older.

Barely recognise myself from how I looked about a year ago :(.

Is 26/27 the year it just really creeps up on you?

An indicator - or so I'm led to believe......

    1. Pinch the skin on the back of your hand and hold for five seconds.

    2. Release, and count how long it takes for the skin to flatten out.

    How to score:

    Time (seconds)

    1-2 (under 30)

    3-4 (30-44)

    5-9 (45-50)

    10-15 (60)

    35-55 (70)

Yeah, I can't drink like I used to.

There was a time when I could do 3 or 4 nights a week drinking, out until the sun comes up & in to work the next day with a (slight) drunken pep in my step.
I'm lucky if I manage a Saturday night now, it usually takes until Tuesday until I'm right.

And I'm three years off thirty :mad:

The soles of my feet are a lot smellier and uglier than they used to be, I'm getting a slight receding hair-line and I can now legally score people who weren't born yet when I was starting primary school.

"youth being wasted on the young" and all that.

I'm 44yrs old and still a competitive fighter, I busted by ass for the last two months preparing for this weekend only to blow my ankle two weeks ago and ended up on crutches and out of training for at least six weeks.

Do I think it was down to my age?.. No, I think it was down to busting a gut which would give nightmares to lads twenty years my junior.

I can still shimy up a lamp post, or scale over walls and railings and still get 'the glad eye off de ladeez!.

Oh yea, and I could pole vault for Ireland in the olympics on my stiffy tomorrow morning :D

Some day's I feel old and others I don't. I definately notice more grey hairs and stuff.
Although, a few weeks ago I was asked for ID when buying drink. I didn't have any on me at the time and they refused to serve me lol I should point out that I'm 31.
    Best day ever.

I'm 32 and not experiencing any particularly noticeable physical ageing signs (apart from white hairs but I've been getting those since I was 17, as did my mother) - I don't know... kinda think a lot of the ageing people talk about in their 20s is all in the head.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,456 ✭✭✭✭Mr Benevolent

I'm 30. My hairline has been receding veeeery slowly since I was about 10. The grey hairs are coming thick and fast, I've no qualifications and no job. I've promised myself I'll start worrying about it next year. Till then I'm going to play golf, drink and enjoy finally having my girlfriend home from Australia after a year. I don't feel any older then I was 10 years ago. A little bit smarter and more sociable maybe, but no older.

They're migrating because of gravity.. in a few years you'll be walking around like a grandfather clock, with your balls bouncing off your knees

Im 37, my right shoulder hurts before it rains for the last few years :( no gray hairs yet but I cant drink red wine or cider anymore. Other than that Im doing pretty damn good :) I havent been to a doctor in about four years now, it seems the older I get the less often I get sick.

Well done on the ID by the way.
I love when I get asked. Since I turned 18 I've been asked about two times, it makes me all happy & skittish...possibly like an underage girl that managed to get into the pub/ nightclub!

Oh yeah, my hangovers have started to get worse but that's because I drink more now than when I was younger - although I definitely don't mix my drinks anymore...

I can't believe so many people are saying they feel old in their 20s, not the first thread I've seen that said either. I was spritely in my teens, 20s, still am spritely in my 30s, plan to be in my 40s. Hell my Dad is in his 70s and there is no stopping him.

I think it could be possibly down to the recent thing of going away to a boiling hot clime for a year.

I went to Vancouver for the summer last yr and it was 35-40 degrees for of the time, Despite wearing facor 50 every day my Irish skin just couldn't handle it. Especially that I'm very freckly, even with the factor 50 on - just going outside the door in Canada I would burn after a while, had to stay out of the sun as much as possible.

I used to look young for my age and came back looking ten years older. :( I'm now told I look old for my age.

There's nothing that ages your face like the sun. My friend recently came back from OZ and I honestly couldn't believe the change in her, was scary, she looked like a 40 yr old.

If I could do it again I REALLY wouldn't go to Canada, I'm that paranoid about about how old I look now. I feel so upset that one summer has messed up my face so severely. Honestly if I showed you a before and after pic you would be shocked. This has been constantly on my mind since I got back,i.e. beating up myself about - why did I put my face through that.

Irish people be aware fo this before you go abroad....it's a not really talked about side effect.

I think my boyish good looks are declining noticeably.

On the plus side, I'm caning it harder than ever

    28 years young

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 310 ✭✭Dunnie1982

    I'm 28 and have:
The left knee of a 50 year old after tearing my cruciate ligament a few years back,
A bit of a gut (working on that though),
    Constant numbing back pain,
My neck cracks almost every time I move it,
I got my first grey hair last week,
I cant drink like I used to or I'm dying for 2 days afterwards.

    On the plus side I:
    Still have 20/20 vision,
Lots of energy most of the time,
I have a full head of hair,
I have all my teeth (which I suppose most people under 60 have now days anyway).

So I suppose the good and bad things about getting older balance themselves out, & in 6 months everything except my dodgy knee, the odd grey hair & the not able to cope with hangovers will be great. Why worry about getting older, its going to happen us all so deal with it and make the best of what you have.:)

Well I've been dying my hair for years because of the grey, I've no idea what my natural colour is any more. The only bit's I know are definitely mine are the grey ones. Maybe I'll start plucking them so.:)

And you run and you run to catch up to the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

    :(
