Anybody got an idea of the date that the exam results are out?

Why do they never tell us this?!

Good point! Hmm... they should be online a day or two beforehand though.

Thanks! Yeah, I think last year it was three days before. I was just looking at the important dates on the homepage whoops!

The word document on the examinations office page says Thursday the 24th. You're probably looking at them being available on the Monday or Tuesday though.

Yeah, they'll more than likely be available on the Tuesday or Wednesday that week.

I was just having a look at the first year Spanish handbook and saw that there's an automatic fail for Latin American History and Culture if your attendance falls below 70%. If you fail this module you fail the year!
I've only been to about 4 of the 10 classes because of work and commitments to projects for other subjects. Does anyone know of anyone else that has failed over something like this? I was going to ring the Spanish department but I don't want to bring attention to something that might have been overlooked. I think I did ok in the exam so I don't see how it would be fair to fail the whole year!

I know a few other people in the same situation because most of the year didn't bother attending any of the lectures (5pm on a Thursday and most people just went home!)

    Any advice is much appreciated!

Say nothing until you get your results, then give them a call if you do fail it.

Were there definite attendence sheets? Even if there are if you can present a concrete series of "On wednesday the 24th I was here and we covered..." You just have to convince people their memories are fuzzy.

Or you could stop making excuses and actually attend college properly.

There are sign in sheets in every class run by the Spanish department for a reason.

If you fail the module, you can repeat it in August but the 70% rule does apply and I have known people to fail because of it. I don't know the situation with the exam (cos it's new and it was an essay until this year) but if your attendance was less than 70% and unless you did outstanding in your essay, automatic fail rule applies.

Sorry if that comes across a bit harsh, but the rule is there for a reason and if you didn't present a cert or official document as explanation, you're marked absent, end of.

Sh*t. I feel so sick right now. Apart from this lecture, I have attended nearly every single other lecture, seminar and tutorial this year. Every one I have missed has been for a genuine reason...

I can't believe I might have screwed up this badly... If I fail first year I am genuinely screwed. There's no way I can afford to go back since I already have a loan of €5000! I feel so sick right now...

When the results come out on the 24th, do we just get the subject results or do we get told if we have definitely been accepted into the next year?

They tend to look over these things. So I hear.

It doesn't matter if you had a genuine reason, if you don't have a cert or a compelling reason (which I think could be the wording in the handbook), you're marked absent, it's how the system works. You said you missed the classes cos you had stuff to do for other subjects and work- they're not compelling reasons really like, the Department won't accept that as an excuse, especially because technically as a full time student you're supposed to be available for classes until 6pm* and that 5pm lecture is scheduled not to clash with your other classes ergo you should attend it.

Errr... you can always repeat in August. Just the one exam. No biggie smalls.

You get the subject results and then if you fail or pass by compensation I presume you get the relevant notifications/documentation for applying for repeats. I was fortunate not to have to repeat, but its not a big deal.

*I know this is bullshít and many people aren't available all the time, but I'm just stating the obvious.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 712 ✭✭✭Devia

Yeah you'll find out when the results are released. You should be able to appeal the whole attendance thing, especially if your results are strong otherwise so don't get too worked up about it yet.

    How do you repeat attendance?

What I mean is that Princess Calico is wrong about thinking if she fails this module, she fails the year. Same as any other module- she can repeat the exam for the module.

It's not about failing attendance, the system works in that you sit the assessment to get whatever percentage of the exam that it's worth and your attendance also has to stay over 70% in order for you to pass.

So if you fail the assessment OR if your attendance drops, you can repeat the exam, or so has been the case in the past.

French department tend to turn a blind eye unless a student is doing absolutely woeful in their work. Generally, if students are known to be competent at French in the classes they show up to, attendance isn't counted. But if a student is borderline passing/failing, attendance is then taken into account to see if they did make an effort.

I'm gonna say it's probably at the discretion of each lecturer and/or department. I'd say if you've done well in the exam/essay, you'll be fine.

What seems to be her problem is that her student handbook says there is a 70% attendance pass requirement and shes only got 40% on record. She says she did ok in the actual exam.

If its true that attendance dictates whether she passes or fails then surely its not repeatable? I don't really know to be honest, never had a module with such requirements.

Does anyone know when I would find out whether I have been officially accepted into Law from Arts for second year?
And what happens then? Do i just accept and my course changes to Law and Arts or what?

Is it like Psychology with a certain number of places given to people given from general arts (the ones with the highest marks)? If so it'll be after the repeats, because some people will have a really high mark in law but may need to repeat an exam in another subject so they need to know who actually passed the whole year.

    Good luck!

Also as a side note I don't know of anyone in my year who failed that Spanish module due to not attending classes.

Yea that is what it's like!
And what happens if someone gets accepted but doesn't want to take the place, does the offer get passed down?

Sorry for all the questions, I'm just quite confused about all this!

Hey, I think you'll definitely get a letter stating that you've been considered,
then you'll have to state your interest in pursuing the focus, and they will whittle down the applicants.
I think that there's 2 rounds of selection,
but I'm sure that they'll contact you if you did or didn't get the place in the final round.

That's what happened with me and single honours Geography but I passed up the opportunity.
BMus is far cooler I think =P

sorry to be so late in contributing to this thread but, nuim dont hold back on telling if you failed. you defo would have gotten a letter by now or an email!so dont worry! :) the worst that can happen is that you will have to repeat the exam because my friend attended no german tutorials in first year and got a first in the exam, but still had to repeat it because of lack of attendance! hope this helps! :)

For some reason my laptop wouldn't access Boards for a few days so I just logged on now and I have to say I'm feeling a bit better after seeing a few of these posts. I just got an email from one of the girls in the class saying that she had the same problem as I had and that she emailed the lecturer and was told that attendance was just a suggestion so she shouldn't be worried...

    Phew...

    Phew...

Sounds like bullshít IMO. If your attendance is as bad as you say it is, there's a good chance it could make a dent on your grade. I hope you pass the module, I really do, but what I'm saying is don't be surprised if your mark isn't what you expect it to be if your attendance was so low.

And just being blunt- if you're keeping on Spanish, just go to the classes next year, it saves you so much hassle around essay/exam/results time.

Just as I was beginning to feel normal again... I've just emailed the lecturer and asked what the story is. I just need to know one way or the other.
I completely understand that the result could be lowered because of the attendance but I can't see how someone should fail if they did well in the exam. I completely deserve to have a lot docked from the result though and hopefully I'll be able to repeat it.

I'm so worried that I'm pretty sure that this post doesn't even make any sense. I need to get my head on straight.
