Pulmonary Embolism & Recovery - Anybody???

    Hi folks,

Just checking if anyone out there has had a pulmonary embolism and what was their recovery like? I used to play a lot of football and was quite fit until I was struck down with pulmonary emboli.

It's been just over six months now and my lungs are still shot to pieces. My o2 saturation levels are very very low when exercising hard and my heart rate rockets quite quickly. I can't run anywhere close to the level I was able to previously, my VO2 max has fallen off a cliff, almost halved. Yes, fitness is a factor after being idle for 9 months (did some training on and off but nothing close to my healthy levels) but I just cant seem to improve my performance level at all when running.

There are very few personal recovery experiences online from runners / football players. Just interested to hear any recovery experiences out there. I'm losing faith in the Dr's, they failed to spot the problem for a long time and now the whole "it will take time" line is beginning to really sound jaded.

I completely appreciate that I was very lucky to survive but I'm struggling to come to terms with my inability to return to fitness and play ball once again.

    Thanks guys.

Gonna let this go on the grounds that the OP is looking to hear others experience. NO ADVICE PEOPLE.

Hi solid 5, I was training for the london marathon up until the beginning of february when i had an accident in work. I was getting treatment for my injuries but not getting any better. In fact I was feeling worse as each week went by. Then three weeks ago I collapsed at home and my wife got an ambulance to take me to Hospital. There I was diagnosed with a pulmonary embolism. I was told I had a lot of large clots on both lungs. After a few days in hospital I was sent home. As its early days I'm just going for very short walks eg 200metres. I get out of breath very easily and feel very tired a lot of the time. Also get quite nervous when i get a twinge. I was also told that it takes time to make a recovery. The exact cause of the embolism is not known yet but I suspect it had something to do with the sudden stop in training. But at this moment I dont care how long it takes to recover as I'm just glad to be alive and able to see my wife and 5 year old son. I'm only 38 years old so hopefully I will get back to some sort of relative fitness in the future. I'm just trying to stay positive as it was a life changing experience for me and hopefully you will get back to a fitness level that you will be happy with. Its nice to know that you are back running as it gives me hope for the future aswell. Thanks Ger.
