Before I begin, I feel I should make it clear that I am a ridiculously snooty person when it comes to music, movies, and various other things that fit in to that overwhelmingly popular cultural bracket. That may explain the following tirade, but probably won't forgive it.

I was listening to the radio earlier, and a song by Justin Bieber came on. I have just Googled him, and it turns out that he is a fellow 16 year old. Surely, since we are of the same demographic, I must like this exciting new musician? As it turns out, I do not. His music was probably written by some committee in a record company, and his horrible, high pitched, warbled voice is practically piercing. He is terrible. Surely someone must like it though, since he is apparently hugely popular right now.

Not according to my 11 year old, female cousin, who along with everyone she knows sees him as, and I quote, 'weird and crap'. So there goes the pre-teen girls fawning over him theory.

So who, exactly is buying his music? And, to finally actually get to my point, who buys any of this stupidly over-commercialised, X-Factor winning terribleness? Leaving music behind, who watches and enjoys by the number shows like King of Queens, or Everybody Loves Raymond, or any multitude of other non-American sitcoms? Who pushes bland, uninteresting movies like Clash of the Titans, or plain crap like Paul Blart Mall Cop to the top of the Box Office?

Where are all these lovers of mediocrity? Why do I not know any of them? Is it because none of the people I do know contribute to Top Ten lists? Or is it that there is some vast, uncultured, mindless pile of people that just do what 'The Man' (and I mean that in the least controversial way possible) tells them to do but stay out of the public eye at the same time?

Finally, do they see themselves as sheep, or do they think they have individual and cultivated tastes?

Just my probably useless ponderings that probably don't make any sense to anyone but me, but anyway, felt I should get them out there.

Tell me, what is your opinion of Said's contention on the myth of the clash of civilizations, do you think it's a stratification myth illustrating the perpetuators cultural biases in accordance with the grave underrepresentation of Eastern biases in most Western media & curriculae, or does it serve the historically fostered occidentalist perception of a culture not in accord with the views of it's own populace , or would you contend this is all just a fabricated illusion & that there is much that could be achieved to overcome these seperate stigmas?

If you don't get what I'm talking about & have a detailed opinion then your just one of those lovers of mediocrity ;)

It's tough being 16, some day you'll realise the world is more rounded than you currently think :D

I'd say his rubbish is aimed at females 12-15 tops. Well thats just your cousin and her mates, someone is buying his crap.

Tbh, he'll probably fade out to nothingness as soon as his balls have dropped. Wouldn't lose any sleep over him anyway.

Don't worry loads of people say stuff like that at your age thinking they are being alternative or something. It gets funny hearing it when you are old.

    When did this happen?

OP as much as you don't understand why they like the stuff they do?
They don't understand why you like what you like.

However not liking mainstream things doesn't make you different or better in someway so just relax about 3 or 4 yrs and you'll be fine!

I hate music and film snobs with a passion. In reference to Justin Bieber. The lad used to post songs of himself singing on youtube for his family/friends. A record company seen it and offered him a bomb of money and unlimited amount of clunge. The lad is a legend

A friend of mine works for a large movie company.
He reliably informs me that in an average week you need to sell 80 units to be top of the Blu Ray charts in the whole of Ireland.
So it's not hard to see why 5hit would rise to the top.

No, schoolkids on holiday should be banned. From AH. Existentialism from a 16 year old is depressing. A rant by a 16 year old about musical tastes being uncultured is very, very depressing.

OP, keep you opinions to yourself about unimportant stuff.
