Given the choice, would you terminate your sex drive?

It may seem an absurd question at first glance (and perhaps it is absurd and I am insane) but I think that if I had the chance I would take it. When I say terminate my sex drive I mean that I would no longer have the capacity to be sexually attracted or stimulated by anything, the sexual element of my being would be entirely removed.

Sexual attraction is one of the strongest drives in the human psyche, while at the same time it is the most difficult of the instinctual needs to fulfil. Wouldn't an individual be better off, in the long run, if he (I speak from the male perspective) were to eliminate this need and in doing so remove himself from a world which is more frustration than satisfaction in the vast majority of instances? Like all species which have been chosen by natural selection, homo sapiens are imbued with a powerful desire to perpetuate our genetic lineage, but given our higher reasoning capabilities we have understood the various processes which have allowed us to come into being, and therefore we have the potential to emancipate ourselves from its demands.

I am as sexually active as the average person in my age bracket, but even so the vast majority of my sexual desire is repressed and the same can be said of almost everyone else, such is the nature of society. If I encountered a similar satisfaction to frustration ratio in any volunatary sphere of activity I would have left it behind long ago, and if I were given the choice in the world of sexuality, I would do the same.

Edit: I ain't asking for methods of stifling sexual desires, I am asking the question in the title of the thread. Also, I am not saying that sex is not enjoyable.

Would you terminate your sex drive? 27 votes

Yes, it is nothing more than a source of frustration

    Are you having a laugh?
Why the hell would anyone want to terminate their sex drive?

    Sex is awesome..

So,basically you're sexually frustrated and would prefere to have no feelings at all about sex, than be frustrated?

    Life's not that simple!

I see what the OP is talking about. I sometimes wonder how much of human history and achievement was shaped purely because some guy wanted to get laid.

Em....No I actually enjoy having sex. With that kind of reasoning why not just get rid of everything we enjoy, the urges is what makes us human , the success , the failure, the win, the sorrow , the joy come on man liven up..

It would be interesting to imagine exactly what you could achieve in your life if you had the time and energy to concentrate on it. Stuff that's better than sex, maybe?

I am not denying that sex is enjoyable, I am just saying that the fact is our sexual desires are frustrated more often than they are satisfied. If the sex drive were removed this frustration would be eliminated, and we could also direct the attention towards other pursuits.

Probably a Vulcan. They only have one peddle'n'crank every seven years so they can keep their mind on other stuff.

Anti-depressants can supress your sex drive.

So can visualising Mary Harney naked.

bit extreme just because Mary Harney refused to tickle your bollix? Join a Hurling team or something and you get lots of action!

Yes I would choose to terminate it. We’ve all had those moments, 3am, curled up in the corner crying with our pants around our ankles, the keyboard covered with bodily fluids. It’s not nice

After sex you have a brief moment of clarity. We realise that nothing matters, we’re all just animals submitting to natural instincts. Like a dog humping a blanket. You look at the girl next to you and she might as well be a bag of spuds. I’d love to live, my life with that level of awareness and self-control. Sex drive is a weakness and I’d love to eradicate it out of my life.

Carlos Ray makes a good point.

I don't see Sex Drive as a Weakness. I see it as pretty much an un-tameable beast. As if it were a Stallion doing its thing and we're just flies on it's back hanging on for the, well, ride.

Ideally I would like to be aware (in the Buddhist sense) enough to be able to find the On/Off switch of my Sex Drive i.e. turn it off at those times when there's no hot women about and then be able to turn it back on when in the company of Lovelies.

I wouldn't get rid of it because you might just get that stare from that Latin Beauty in a hot and sweaty night in Buenos Aires (I live in hope). And those are the moments/nights that will hopefully flash before my eyes on my deathbed. Because, for me, I can give up most things (drink, chocolate) but I can't give up women/sex forever. It's just too damn good.

Imagine if the OPs suggestion were to be achievable, one could have up to 58 seconds of every waking minute to work on other projects.

the amount of us making plans to take over the world would be amazing, but oh, then again ,would we want to, if the spoils did not include...
