Posted this on another board but thought it may generate a better response here...

My girlfriend has recently started smoking. She's 25. We have been going out for about 3 years. 18 months or so ago she started having the occasional fag on a night out. I suspected a few weeks back that she was smoking during the day and about a week ago she came clean. She smokes 7-8 a day. The smoking does not really bother me, but is it not a bit strange that she is starting at 25? She is generally very health conscious (eats well ,gym regularly etc), so I find this a bit strange. Anyone have any similar experiences?

I was 18 when i started smoking. I'd finished school and started of my own volition, none of my mates smoked. Don't know why i did,it just happened. Started off gradually,a few when i went out and the like and over 6-8 months i ended up smoking regularly in work.

My grandmother started smoking at the age of 66.

    I'm older than Minecraft goats.

Ya there's no real "usual age to start smoking" or anything.
Some will start aged 13 and others not till they're 60.

I found out tother day that my grandfather only started drinking at 65. Only ever had a glass of wine with friends but it supports the "Its normal for it to start at anytime" theory. I personally have never known anyone to have their first smoke after 20yo and become a regular. Thats just me...

Is it a social thing for her? If her workmates smoke and she smoked with them on a night out, it is not that big a jump to start going out for a smoke with them during the day?

Not a social thing. She smokes alone etc. Not quite sure what to make of it but I guess I've accepted it now.

I started smoking when I was 13 I guess but wasnt a regular smoker until 16/17. I would think its very unusual for a person to begin smoking in their twenties?? I couldn't imagine the person sitting next to me in work suddenly one day out of the blue saying shes going for a smoke.

Im off the smokes about 6 months at this stage and I was at the age (early thirties) where it did affect my daily life. I may fall off the wagon but im pretty certain I am rid of them!

Op, I would have serious words with her and ask where this is coming from? Did she smoke previously?

    She smokes alone at work.
Maybe she is stressed and finds these short breaks are a way of copeing.

    Does she work long hours?

Maybe she just tried it, enjoyed it, and so continued?

Some people smoke it because it is linked to controlling weight.
