Wouldn't it be great if there was a transcript of the discussions that lead to this law being passed?

    Mohammad loves the cock.
You can't say that, you have to say ******** loves the cock.

They passed the law because they were Constitutionally required to do so.

Although it's a bit of a joke to have on the statute books, the chances of anyone being charged (and prosecuted) with the offence are slim-to-nil. The awkward wording of it ensures this.

That said, I wouldn't mind having a referendum to remove the clause from the Constitution.

I find this entire forum to be completely intolerent of religion in general tbh. As a very religious person I find it hurtful anyone would make a joke about my religion.

The last thread on this was hilarious. The owner of a certain website came out and posted someone's else's 'blasphemy' in a rather sad willy-waving gesture, one that he categorically knew wouldn't get him into trouble with the aforementioned law. It was touchingly pathetic and possibly the most hypocritical thing I've ever seen.

    Dermot Ahern loves Mohammad.

    Serious question about this actually,
I have visable tattoos that would be deemed Blasphemic by the Catholic Church.
Does that mean(in theroy) that I can be fined/arrested?

If we have a referendum it'll be funny, sad, and also unsettling to see the christotaliban looking for a vote against it.

I'd like to see how far that could be pushed. In the interests of Constitutional Law, which I firmly adhere to:p

What if, for example, I came out and said I didn't believe in Dermot Ahern?

I'm trying my best to test that hypothesis.

It's not just blasphemy you need to focus on to do it.. they also cunningly added Sedition and Indecency when the law was updated!

How was it required by the constitution? I thought it was Fianna Fail trying desperatly to claw back older voters after the Medical Card dibacle.

God is tired, worn out. So he speaks to St. Peter, "You know, I need a holiday. Got any suggestions where I should go?"

St. Peter, thinking, nods his head, then says, "How about Jupiter? It's nice and warm there this time of the year."

God shakes His head before saying, "No. Too much gravity. You know how that hurts my back."

"Hmmm," St. Peter reflects. "Well, how about Mercury?"

"No way!" God mutters, "It's way too hot for me there!"

"I've got it," St. Peter says, his face lighting up. "How about going down to Earth for your vacation?"

Chuckling, God remarks, "Are you kidding? Two thousand years ago I went there, gave the cock to a Jewish girl, and they're STILL talking about it."

    Article 40.6.1.i:
The publication or utterance of blasphemous, seditious, or indecent matter is an offence which shall be punishable in accordance with law.

Mind you, a 1999 Supreme Court case - Corway v Independent Newspapers - concerning the issue declared that there was no workable definition of blasphemy that could be applied in court cases. Any self-respecting judge nowadays would be wary of convicting someone of such a "crime".

I do agree though, that it was a great distraction for the Government from the real issues.

Ah, so it was an offence that had no law to do the punishing? what they really should have done is changed it to mutterance of blasphame. Gardi pulling people of trains for muttering "jesus christ!" after reading the front page of the sun - "Boy (8) eats granny"
