Its not looking too good, what happened to the promised updates on their website. Terrible shame if it is gone for good.

Im one of the figure skaters. And I heard that the ownership has changed. It was bought by the people who own the rink in Belfast. I don't know quite how true that is. But thats what I was told anyway. Oh also that chynna pope one of the main figure skater teachers (and possibly Sean Dooley the hockey coach) is leaving. Again I dont know how accurate that is. But I hope its not true.

According to the Argus, its going to re-open under new management.

Yeh well new ownership would kinda explain the new management.

Just wondering if anyone had any information regarding the Ice Dome in Dundalk.

Says it is closed on their website, wondering if anyone knew when it's planned to re-open?

I left a message on their facebook page, which came up immediately, however was deleted a couple of days later, with no response, and sadly, no info on the Planet Ice website, as was indicated there would be updates on their site, and sadly no contact details there. I really miss the lessons and practice.

Think I may have to purchase some snow whites in the meantime, in order to maintain my skills

The lack of communication is completely unprofessional, and I left a message on their facebook saying that if they have no intention of replying to any posts there, they sould really amend their settings so that any comments have to be approved first, and yet, they still leave it open. I, for one, will be skating in the madness of the Christmas rinks in Dublin when they re-open, as for a company that does not seem to care about its customer base, I am not in any rush to support them any further. I do hope the rink that is supposed to open in the Artane/Coolock area of Dublin will be fruitful soon - latest I heard was that it would be open by Christmas, but seeing as it was initally supposed to be Jan, then April, and so on, I am not holding my breath.

the one thing i do know is the ownership has changed... the person who ran the facebook, im not sure has changed over too? so far the fault with it not being open is due to papers needing signing (latest rumour) but being from dundalk and without a car i hope it does open and those christmas rinks are no good for ice hockey

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45 Jet Set

It's the lack of information that makes it unbearable! If it is closed for good ( and I hope it's not.) Why can't they just say so?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45 Jet Set

Just have to win the Euro Millions and open a rink!:D

You would'nt happen to know if this rink thats supposed to open in Artane/Coollock being set up by the same people who operated the Charlestown on Ice?

Nope, not the same crowd at all. Not sure who it is, but from what I've heard, the person hoping to set is up, has a son who plays ice hockey, and a daughter who figure skates.

I train in JJB and never even knew it was closed?

I know this probably does not say too much but I would have expected someone to mention it in the last month.

I think I am right in saying there are three co's in there - one owns ice dome, other soccer dome and other the gym and shop upstairs but gym no longer part of the new DW fitness chain in the UK.

Dundalk icedome has gone due to lack of investment.Staff were told to find other jobs.......anyone got more to add

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7 Dev.burlesque

I find that hard to believe to be honest. Did planet ice not buy it a few months back? Im sure that didnt come cheap. That being the case, why would an ice-rink chain company make such an investment and then never open it- not even once.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45 Jet Set

I gather Planet ice were going to take over the running on the ice dome, invest in new plant etc. I don't think they actually bought it. In the last article in the Dundalk Democrat they stated that they were waiting to hear from the landlord to complete the deal perhaps looking for lower rent? for whatever reason the landlord may have decided not to agree to the deal. Now Planet Ice are either backing out or are playing hard ball. (hopefully the latter).

Staff were told that planet ice were only seeing if it was a viable business. We were told it would be opened at the earliest Mid January 2011.Then told to find other jobs as it is very unlikely it will ever reopen due to overhead costs

Such a huge investment, how could they just let it go to waste? Seems a bit ludicrous...

Its a long way to Dundalk so i do hope the Dublin Rink will open soon

I think it will be a long time before a Dublin rink opens. I still believe the the Ice dome will reopen.

yes, it does seem strange, it wasnt there for many years and the equipment and infrastructure are all there and should be still in good condition, hope something gets sorted

Thanks for the link - looking likely only possibility of skating will be the Christmas rinks with their sky high prices :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45 Jet Set

Hopefully these idiot landlords will cop-on soon in the mean time this might be an option.
Dundonald International Ice Bowl, Belfast. Prices vary with kids school holiday, best time to go is when they are in school and in the morning weekdays- priced @ about £6.50 less if you have your own skates and can stay almost all day!
The expensive part is getting there!

Its such a shame whats going on at the moment. its so unprofessional, I just want to know if and when they are going to open, I really believed this time that it was going to re-open in September, I dont know why the landlords are now against the rink re-opening, at the moment its of no value to them, now it stands as a failed business so why not let planet ice into run it? WE NEED ICE!!!

its such a shame that ice skating is only a seasonly sport in this country, the christmas rinks are so expenisive and only there for 2 months yet there always full which shows that a year round rink would be very popular here!!! they just need a bit more promotion to keep it going :D

Does anyone know anything about a rink in Dublin? I hear so many rumors I dont know who to believe? I've heard theres something going on at ikea and I've heard of something happening in Coolock but its all word of mouth.

    PLEASE RE-OPEN OUR RINK

Maybe if enough people emailed, wrote and/or phoned Finnabair Estates Limited asking them to talk to Planet Ice and the Dundalk Democrat or simply "what the hell is going on with the ice dome?"....

Let me know your views on this:confused:?

I did think about that but I couldnt find an email address! but if they are not returning calls to planet ice or the democrat then I dont think we'd stand a chance, but its worth a try, anything is worth a try at this stage

I cannot find any contact details for the landlords but if someone finds details I will gladly send emails to try get the rink open again. I miss it sooooooo much. :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45 Jet Set

The details are available at this link:

    http://www.eircomphonebook.ie/search/Louth/FINNABAIR_ESTATES.html

No email address as of yet anyone gets one please let us know.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45 Jet Set

It seems they have applied for planning permission to build a cinema etc opposite the ice dome, see this link.
    http://www.louthcoco.ie/en/Services/Planning/Planning-Lists/Dundalk/2010/March/Planning_Applications_Granted_we_26-03-2010.pdf

But this does not seem to have any bearing on the ice dome lease? anyone have access to the company's office? If so they could checkout there last filed end of year financial accounts. See how they are doing.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 25 guesswhooo

U've gotta be kidding!!! charlestown in Dublin closed down to become a cinema...we have enough cinemas in the country we dont have any ice rinks!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45 Jet Set

I said opposite the ice dome. on the waste ground I presume.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,425 ✭✭✭indiewindy

Yes, thats where its due to go and badly needed for the town

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45 Jet Set

Yes! I agree! Anything that will provide employment is welcome in the area. This as stated in the planning application would compliment the ice dome, and of course the ice dome would compliment the cinema.
This does not explain why Finnabair Estates Ltd are not interested in leasing the premises to Planet Ice.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4 cool mint

Dundalk needs to be acted on also i think it is worth putting pressure on the Dublin guys that were going to set up, and see what there story is!!! bottom line is lads & girls we need a rink ......

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2 icemarshal

i got a job in dundrum on ice so that is openin and i even get to work off the ice before it starts in 3 weeks. iv worked for 6 yrs on ice rinks for christmas but have to say the dome was good

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5 ferrarilooney

I heard that planet ice signed and agreement yesterday with ice dome. Hopefully this was true and we will be back skating soon.
