UFO's - Do you believe?

Just reading about Stanton Friedman (HERE), a man that stated "some UFOs are intelligently controlled extraterrestrial spacecraft, and this is the biggest story of the millennium."

Before anyone can say, here we go, we have another nutter (besides myself :p ), Stanton was employed for 14 years as a nuclear physicist for companies like General Electric, General Motors, Westinghouse and Aerojet General Nucleonics.
He worked on highly classified programs involving nuclear aircraft, fission and fusion rockets.
With 53 years of serious study apparently of the subject, he seems to know his stuff.

So I ask my fellow boardies - do you believe that (a) secrets are being withheld from us in regards to the actual existence of UFO's and (b) if they do actually exist?

Are (a) secrets are being withheld about UFO's and (b) Do you think they exist? 1030 votes

I don't believe secrets are being withheld from us in regards to the actual existence of UFO's, because I'm not a paranoid conspiracy-theory nut.

I believe that there are other life forms somewhere in the Universe; I feel like there has to be something somewhere because, as Douglas Adams put it "Space is big. Really big."
As to whether they actually travel around in flying saucers; nah, don't think so. Think that just comes from watching too much sci-fi.

I believe we're being lied to by our governments about whether or not the Knife-Wrench is actually practical and safe. It's pressure from the Knife-Wrench lobbyists.

I don't think the full details and knowledge that governments (esp the US) hold regarding UFOs have been disclosed

Interesting video here from a former US legislator asking for the government to disclose info which he believes they hold - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrK2YgfjnHo

ha! Best poll i've seen in a while!

On topic, yes I do believe in UFO's/aliens and also think they've definitely been here. After watching the disclosure project on youtube I do think the US government is hiding something from us.

    What a stupid question

    Of course UFO's exist

Anytime you see something in the Sky and ask yourself "what the :confused::confused::confused: is that ?" Youve seen a UFO

Once youve determined that it is a bird/a plane/superman the UFO becomes an IFO

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,789 ✭✭✭✭ScumLord

There's no way the human race could keep this secret. If Aliens where talking to the yanks and any other country found out there'd be uproar, any country that would be speaking to them would want the deal to be exclusive. There's practically no way the aliens could play each country off each other because we'd do everything to find out what deal the others are getting.

Gossip, power and greed make secrets damn near impossible to keep.

To be serious, since life has evolved somewhere in the universe, the probability that it has done so twice (or any other multiple of one) is equal to one.

I don't believe secrets are being withheld from us in regards to the actual existence of UFO's, because I'm not a paranoid conspiracy-theory nut.

You don't have to be a paranoid conspiracy-nut to consider the idea that Government's may wish to withhold information of that nature. Such an argument is silly, and reduces any chance of having a serious discussion.

    Consider this.

The possibility of intelligent life existing outside of Earth is extremely high. The possibility of such intelligent life wishing to explore, by virtue of a curious nature of intelligent life - would also be very high. So the chances of life outside earth having visited us isn't beyond the realms of reality.

So with that in mind. We must then examine reasons for why a Government might supress such information? For one - to avoid mass hysteria.

Common arguments against my above points are as follows.
    • But how could they travel so far?
    • Even if they could travel such distances, why would they?

One would be naive if they thought that advanced intelligent life would be confined to our technology. Curiosity would drive them to seek out other intelligent life.

I'm not saying for sure that we have been visited - but nobody can say for sure that we have not.

Considering how vast space is and the millions of stars and planets throughout it, it's illogical to think planet Earth is the only place of life in space.

There certainly is some interesting videos of UFOs on the internet, not to mention the conspiracy around Roswell, area 51 and area S4.

Unidentified Flying Objects?..................yea of couse they exist,to say otherwise is daft.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 3,838 ✭✭✭midlandsmissus

    They exist.

If you think about it, it's so blatantly obvious they exist.
But we have all been conditioned to think of it as crazy.

    Think of it this way:

Say Your neighbour tells you he saw an alien, what would your immediate response be? I'm betting it would be 'you're crazy!'.

But why - if you think about it logically there are bound to be other lifeforms out there. It makes more sense that there is than there isn't.

When there is something that you have an immediate set reaction to , such as 'that's crazy'....this is something you have been conditioned to think.

Try to think outside the box...

I believe that they do exist but are more likely top-secret aircraft than extra terrestrial beings.

The reason they're being kept secret is that if any technology was introduced that removed the need for fossil fuels the whole global economy would grind to a halt and there would no longer be any motivation for us as a species to evolve socially.

And that would be a massive shame because the 'evil capitalist society' we all frown upon was the driving force behind the 21st century environment and this environment is a hell of a lot better than for that of any other people that have lived throughout history.

Say Your neighbour tells you he just saw Elvis, what would your immediate response be? I'm betting it would be 'you're crazy!'.

But why - if you think about it logically he might have just come back from Graceland with a shovel where he devised some ingenious scheme to get past security and exhume the corpse

On balance Id still go with the "Crazy" option though

I would find it hard to believe that our planet is the only planet in existence that contains some form of intelligent life. I think there would be quite a few planets with intelligent life. Now to say that life has evolved to the point where they can travel millions/thousands of light years and found us is just speculation and possibly improbable?

Meh, the "conspiracy theory nut" remark was tongue-in-cheek. It's not totally outside the realms of impossibility, I suppose, but I do think it's highly unlikely that Governments keep information like that hidden. Or, indeed, highly unlikely that they have that information in the first place.

Elvis is dead, so yes my response would be 'you're crazy', going by current physical laws as we know them.

But why, if some-one told you they saw an alien would you say they're crazy?

I'm not making fun of you, and it's not a rhetorical question, I'm curious as to what your answer is...?
    Why is it crazy?

I suppose I just feel that if there was ever contact with extraterrestrial life that the Government wouldn't go to extreme lengths to hide it. It'd surely be pretty difficult to hide also; it would eventually get out one way or another.

With all that said, I don't think we will ever actually come into contact with any other life forms. The Milky Way is just one galaxy; there could be intelligent life in other galaxies that are simply just too far away to ever detect. Plus, who's to say other life forms would ever want contact with us? ;)

I suppose I just feel that if there was ever contact with extraterrestrial life that the Government wouldn't go to extreme lengths to hide it. It'd surely be pretty difficult to hide also; it would eventually get out one way or another.

But with 1000's of sightings, and government officials who have spoken about them - there is a hint of suggestion that the Governments may be hiding something. I mean - a man who walked on the moon fully believes that his Government is supressing information. It's not all crackpots and drunks.
With all that said, I don't think we will ever actually come into contact with any other life forms. Too far for us? Yes. Too far for an advanced lifeform? Maybe not. That's a huge conclusion to jump to without ever considering that their technology might be able to travel great distances in a short time.

Secondly - The Milky Way is huge. It has between 200-400 billion stars. Why should we be the only advanced forms of life, given those numbers?

I'll say this about what I am about to post, I want to tell it, but at the same time am worried that people will think I'm a nut. I'm as socially conditioned as the rest of us, and it's hard to break out of the mold. And no-one wants to be thought of as crazy.

However I've developed far enough that I can now talk about this, this has been happening to me for years and years, and I would never have dreamed of speaking of it before because I was so worried about what people would think.

    Now I can say it.

To me saying "I believe in aliens" is like saying "I believe in this computer in front of me", ...there is no doubt in my mind whatsoever. It's not a belief... I know it to be true...if that makes sense.

I have been taken by aliens....it's scary saying this to others believe me...this is a hard thing to do. But it's true and believe me I never wanted it to happen, and if it never happened again I'd be very happy. The fear is like no other.

I think other people have had experiences but the majority are afraid of saying anything for fear of looking like a nut...

"It would eventually get out there one way or another" - it is out there, it's right in front of you.

You don't have to hide things physically from people. What's the best way to hide something from people? Tell them it's impossible.

I will continue in that vain of thought.
