No, it increases the chances of recessive genes being homozygous, but recessive genes can be good or bad, its like the genetic lottery but with high risk/reward

Young couple discover they are brother and sister
    May 31, 2010

A young Irish couple with a toddler have been left devastated after reportedly finding out they are, in fact, half brother and sister.

The pair, who grew up far apart and met two years ago, told Britain's The Mail on Sunday newspaper that DNA testing last month revealed they share the same father.

The young man, who is known only as "James", was unable to find out the truth about his family background because of secrecy surrounding Irish family law.

The couple, aged in their 20s, are now planning to undertake a landmark civil case against a judge and a child psychologist who were involved in James's case.

"When we found out that we were half-brother and half-sister, we were devastated," said James, who has decided to keep his family's identity a secret for the sake of their son.

"When I got the phone call with the DNA tests, it was like when you hear about someone you know has died or like when you are in a car crash."

The couple say they still plan to get married and have more children, despite being shocked and pained by the news.

"I'm not blind and I'm not oblivious to what people might think," James said.

"We're not from a bad background and if someone had said to me that they were in a relationship like this, I would have said they were sickos."

    ...

The couple's father, who is known as "Tom", had unknowingly fathered James in a short-term relationship before he settled down with his current family.

Once he found out about James's birth about four years later he proceeded with a legal battle to gain access to his son, The Mail on Sunday reported.

The court ruled that James should have no knowledge of his real father or have any access to him.

The couple said they hoped speaking out would help others in similar situations.

"People reading this think our situation is a one-off and that the chances of this happening are the same as the chances of winning the lottery – but every week someone wins the lottery."

every week someone wins the lottery

    It could be you !

Anyone see Ireland AM this morning?
They were running a story about an Irish couple who just found out they are half brother & half sister. WTF!!!!!

My Weetabix nearly came up when I saw it, but after a bit of thought it's not really surprising. There are probably lots of kids & adults that don't know who their biological father is & we do live on a small island so chances of bumping into a secret sibling is a reality.

I feel sorry for the couple though because they have children together & this came out of the blue.

Gave me the heebie jeebies all the same.

There was a simular case in the london a few years back,

2 people met in a bar, love at first sight. they move in together and try for a baby infact she got pregnant a few times and always miscarried before the 12 week. anyways they go for testing and they find that they carry the same genes. turns out the ladys dad donated his sperm and her boyfriend was a result of the donated sperm. They split up.

All it did for me is show what massive cnuts TV3 and the Ireland AM presenters are. The interview was cut to show Sinead Desmond every time she asked a question and her faux empathy made me want to kick the tv in. Their voices were altered to protect their privacy but every now and again their real voices could be heard. Dreadful "journalism". Their story is awful for them and Ireland AM have been exploiting it all week.

I was listening to Gerry Ryan (RIP) reading a report from the UK which stated that as people from the lower socio-economic backgrounds were having more and more babies by multiple partners that the incidence of siblings meeting and reproducing was rising dramatically.

But getting back to the couple on TV3 and their interview yesterday morning.

Well it must be hell on the poor guys, and unless you've been absolutely in love with a person & had planned on spending the rest of your lives together it would be impossible to imagine the hell they're going through.

Personally, I think if it was me and like this case there was a baby, I'd keep my head under the radar & stay together without producing anymore babies.

Poor guys, I did feel awfully sorry for them.
