Bought some imperial leather soap at the weekend and it just so reminds me of my youth and being in my nannys house. She always had that soap.

The smell of it is very unique!

Anyone else have smells that bring them back to childhood.

That cheap plastic material that they use for kids raincoats, wellies and inflatable swimming armbands brings my 80's childhood days roaring back.

    Mmmmmmmm......huffing nostalgia plastic.

    Nivea
    Comfort Fabric Conditioner
    Farmyard cowdung smell
    Certain new car smells
Sometimes a wood fire smell brings a blast from the past

all typed while drunk and without a spell checker so
    forgive any spelling mistakes...........
    ............
    ....
    .

Leaving all the obvious smell my finger jokes aside.....

Ponds soap the green stuff. (for the poor side of the family)
Imperial Leather (the expensive soap that we never had and only smelled when visiting rich relatives) the more expensive version of Imperial leather even had a metal plate in the soap so a magnet would hold the soap.

The smell from plastic beach balls on the beach with sand
    and suncream.

Cow Dung and other such horrid farm smells that we were told you just needed to get used to but never did from visits to the country cousins farm every Sunday.

Colgate toothpaste from staying over at my grandparents
from the poorside of the family and horrid arm and hammer or arm and anvil rotten pink toothpaste from when visiting the more well off aunt and uncle.

Vasaline hair oil that the grandfather used.

Bags of apples's hand picked from orchard's all piled
    intogether gave a distinctive smell.

The smell of burnt wasp and bloodsucker spiders burnt
under a magnyfying glass during the summer.

The smell of my mothers baking, buns apple tarts etc
and helping out in the kitchen as a kid and getting "the lick" (end of the bowel of mix) or eathing the core of the apples dipped in suger when making an apple tart.

I still have memories from the age of 4-5 yeaes of age
from playschool where I remember the smell of plastic Beakers in pink yellow, green that held diluted orange in a huge container and getting a rich tea biscuit as well as a pink or white princess marshmellow.

Cap guns, paper caps, distinctive smell.

Workshop smell. My father had "his room" where he had
lots of radios to talk on ham radio which also contained
loads of drawers with tools, gadgets, solder, electronics, pcb boards, and the 8086 pc. Distinctive Nerd PCB board, electronic type smell from that room always.

Dewberry, my first long term girlfriend wore dewberry perfume which I loved, she ended up two timing me for
some bloke that looked like Mark Owen from Take That
so the smell brings up good and bad emotions.

Major ciggerettes. my teacher in 6th class in primary school used to send me to the local shop to buy him a pack of fags and I was allowed to keep 10p change.
after a while I would buy single ciggerettes and smoke and share them with the lads in the class (at age 12)

And while on the subject of teachers........Both in 6th class and wayyyyy later on in Transistion year in seconadary school as they walking around the class and checked your work the smell of fags or drink from them.

The smell of gunfire! as a teenager and joining the FCA
going our and fireing the FN-FAL rifle and Bren Gun and getting that looooovveeeelllly smell of the powder burning
    when fireing the guns.

PVC, the smell of skin tight PVC on the lovely looking women at one of the goth clubs in Dublin where there was almost a static charge ready to bounce off of the clothes.

Smoke machines. The smell of the smoke machines while
    out at the disco.

Homer Simpson Hairgel from the poundshop.
Never smelled anything like it since it was awesome!

When in a car journey where the windows are rolled up
and someone sneezes there can be a horrible sharp horrific smell that lingers sometimes. I remember having to hold my breath when in a car when someone sneeezed without covering their nose where the vapour from the sneeze went everyplace.

Dozol medicine last time I smelled it was strongly familiar. I was dosed with it 'til I was 2.
Crayons, when I was colouring with my son, the smell was very remeniscent of my childhood.
Turkey cooking.....Christmas mornings come flooding back.
The smell of Christmas decorations, the tinsel has a distinctive smell, dunno if it's dust or what.
    New schoolbooks.
Lifebuoy soap, my uncle used it, reminds me of hols on his farm.
    Freshly cut grass.
Tcp of when I had my ears pierced. My auntie took me when I was staying with her, she washed my ears with it every day 'til I went home.
Ann French cleanser, first one I used.
Imperial Leather deodorant, I used it in first year after pe shower...I dreaded them..so embarrassing.

The smell of plaster (stuff that goes on a house) always brings me back to when I was about 6 or 7! We were having a conservatory built on the side of the house and the house was getting plastered.

The smell of cut grass reminds me of the gorgeous summers we used to have!

rhubarb - we used to grow it in our back garden, i used to help chop it for freezing and making rhubarb tarts
jeyes fluid - lots of people on our road used to pour it over their rubbish bins when putting them out for collection to keep the dogs away from them in the days before wheelie bins

I loved the smell of coal and a real fire - everyone had a roaring fire going and on a winters night I loved that smoky, smoggy smell out on the street.
Don't get it much anymore though.

My nan's homemade vegetable soup, there was always a massive pot of it bubbling on the range.. Also her lemon meringue pie..

The smell in my Dads old cars.. you'd burn the arse off yourself sitting on the plastic seats in summer...

Where you from Loopy, down here, we still have lovely fuel burning fires. Cosy! Nothing like the crackle of dry sticks on a cold night. Also that smell in old cars, love it, always makes me feel like im off on an adventure like long road trips did back then. Seven of us in the car, rarely sitting on the seats -some sitting on the floor, one on the hand brake, one in the front on mam's knee - car seats were a thing of the future.

Personally the smell of a pipe sends me back, I love it, reminds me of my dad. Hardly anyone smokes a pipe anymore, always find myself slowing down if I catch someone smoking one to try and get a smell.

    • Play-Doh.

Jeyes Fluid - my local cinema the Ritz in Athlone always had a very strong aroma (a good sign that it was well maintained) - I find it very nostalgic now -aroma of Jeyes Fluid reminds me of the excitement of going to see new films in the 60s.

The smell of lemon floor cleaner and jiff - reminds me of a Sathurda when my Mam would go on a cleaning blitz! Can also hear the washing machine going too!

Smell of brown bread baking in Gran's side of the house, each morning.

New school books and the inside of a new schoolbag or pencil case, plastic-esq.

Smell of a Sunday dinner with roasties and gravy and the heat of the kitchen from all the stuff being prepared.

Smell of hay being cut across the road.

    L'amaint, or Lulu - my Gran's perfume :)

Curry powder - for some reason the school bus always smelled like curry powder!!

My mother's purse always smelled of leather and tobbaco. Whenever she opened it the smell would come wafting out.

There used to be a little bookstore/office supply here. It had been there since 18?? in the same building. You had to go there to get your school books. It always had this musty old paper smell mixed with ink smell. I loved it. Went out of business just a few years ago- no one left in family to run it.

That sharp scent of black permanent markers that you letterted posters with in school, do kids still use those? I may have to go see if I can find one.:P

Tea roses and honeysuckle from when i was very young and they grew along the fence on one whole side of the yard of the house we lived in.

The smell of new vinyl baby dolls - usually at Christmas.

Oh and the smell of the tree itself.

smell of pie fresh from the oven. My mother never baked but my girlfriend's
Mom made cream pie every day  Her kitchen smelled wonderful.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,785 ✭✭✭KungPao

    For me it's:

Brut by Fabergé! I remember my older bro got a boxset of it for Christmas one year in the early '80s, inclusive of a soap on a rope! I had a sniff of it the other day in Tesco....WOOOOAH! it took me back. The nicest smell ever too.

Smoke from a pipe. My uncle has always enjoyed his clan tobacco, I love when he's around and he sparks it up!

The smell of stuff burning around Halloween.

Pine from a real Christmas tree.

Tommy Girl perfume. All the girls wore it when I was a teen.

And of course the cut grass smell always takes me back.

    Oh another one;

The smell when you erase something written in pencil, particularly when using the more abrasive blue 'rubber'.
