I know there's a few bray wheelers on here - can anyone confirm that the lap is the same as last year?

AFIK the start is going to be slightly different, neutralised to Annamoe, then turn left before the bridge, from then on it's the same course and finish.
There might also be a handicapped start, depending on numbers attending. Will be a good warm up, to get the heart and legs going for all of you attending the WW200 the next day.

I thought that's what it was last year. Although maybe it wasn't neutralised?

I could be wrong about neutralised start, but the actual course is the same;) And Met.ie says that Saturday will be mainly a dry but cloudy day (but you know how wrong they can be ).

What time is this on at? I presume sign-on is at the Bray clubhouse? What distance is it for A4s?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,178 ✭✭✭xz

Sign on is at the GAA grounds in Roundwood, Race starts at 11am, so sign on from 9:30/10:00 am

This is a great race on a great circuit for A2,A3 and A4 riders. Circuit is safe, well marshalled and I've never met a dissatified rider after it!

WW200 is on the 12th, so this will be a warm down for those that want it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,014 ✭✭✭shaungil

Folks, what is the circuit for this like. Roundwood spells hills to me. The last one out of there was carnage from what I heard.
There's a race in Navan on sunday which is closer but if there's a compelling reason I might do Sat.

The WW200 is on the 13th, The Christy McManus is on the 12th. The OP got his dates wrong in the Title post, so it's a warm up for the WW200 for those that are hard enough;):D

Yikes, I got my dates wrong too. I need to cancel my Saturday night plans so.

did the last race in roundwood under the orwell banner...........is it the same course?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,178 ✭✭✭xz

Some of it is. You wont have that tough climb at Gregory's garage in Newtownmountkennedy. Its a shorter circuit. 5 or 7 laps(not sure)

A2 A3 A4 off together or is it separated with 3 races, anyone know?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,981 ✭✭✭Diarmuid

Seems details are VERY thin on the ground. Nothing on the Bray Wheelers site.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 657 ✭✭✭fondriest

Called the club yesterday and was told if there are enough numbers there will be a seperate a4 race but this will not be decided untill the last minute. A2 and a3 will be in the same race regardless of numbers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 991 ✭✭✭25sean

Im told sign on is in roundwood gaa club.. and pending on numbers of A234s the race will follow from this.. if there arent enough then all cats will be together..

    thats the latest ive heard..

didn't do the race last year what is the circuit exactly???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,981 ✭✭✭Diarmuid

Back from race. A4's off first , followed by A3's then A2s. As expected the bunch was huge at the end. 7 laps about 85k in total. Pretty much flat apart from the odd drag. Got up for 2nd unplaced A4. I can't sprint but I figured I'd give it a blast anyway. Moved up on the outside going into the last corner and just kept hammering away until the line. Nice day out but not a patch on the Hammond Memorial. Didn't really suffer at all.
EDIT: Don't know the names of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd sorry

its definately changed since I last did it so, there use to be a very noticeable wall around rathdrum in it back then, and another couple of steep pinches in there too, and of course the few drags you mentioned

This was the route. . There was a nice kicker but nothing to split a pack

Good race today. Another 500m and the bunch would have caught the break!

I've uploaded a set of pictures here if anyone is interested. I was driving behind the race for the first 2 laps so they are from lap 3 (I think) taken just before the short hard climb and of the finish. The whole set is here - have'nt time to go through and delete any.

Oh yeah I have done that one before, but since the one I was talking about before which went the back roads of annamoe - bottom of rathdrum village - onto the WALL and up to rathrdrum village - on to laragh and back to annamoe, and was a circuit race too, the last time up the wall was a KILLER, I remember seeing christ newton do it in the ras one year in the big ring  he killed everyone

Yes, unfortunately...I will update you after today's spin around Wicklow, usual story I'm afraid. That's Fondriest in the Wexford Wheelers jersey, on the nice Orbea.

And me in the black kit at the back.
Did anyone else find the A4 bunch unbearably negative? Tried working a little on the first lap, just to warm the legs up more than anything but no one was willing to do a tap and just sat up waiting for the catch...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,505 ✭✭✭✭DirkVoodoo

Not sure I agree Sean, at least in so far as it being an A4 only problem. I thought when A3 caught up the pace would explode and the group would split up. In the end most of them sat in, the bunch swelled and the pace stayed the same (according to my Garmin at least).

I just wanted to hang on, that course was not my cup of tea and there was a lot of gravel on the corners. I don't go well with gravel, it freaks me out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,981 ✭✭✭Diarmuid

It was the same for all to be honest. That setup (A4's,gap,A4's,gap,A2s) seems to kill any enthusiam. What's the point in attacking in the A4's, to get 30 seconds off the front for 20k, kill yourself and then have the A3's haul the rest of the A4 bunch back up to you?

You were nearly part of a break half way through as I recall, didn't look like anyone wanted to work with you though :)

It looked promising, three strong riders and me. However it went nowhere. Didn't work effectively together.

Unfortunatly the a4 group is always negative in a handicap race but not quiet as bad when in an a4 only race. There are a lot of riders of similar ability in a4 race so its hard for any break to stick unless its really hilly. Nice to meet a few boardsies yesterday.

In what way was it not a patch on NH? The circuit or the race itself or something else ?

Could be considered a quite condescending and trite comment to the organisers who I gather put alot of work into it or indeed any riders who got a decent result and had to "suffer" - perish the thought in a bike race !! I am sure if you suffered you would have won it :)

ok, then:. All races are equally as good as each other, this one included. Is that what you wanted to hear?

    No

Perhaps explain why it's not a patch on the NH !??!

Well Diarmuid anything to say for yourself or are you just going to leave people wondering if you were slagging off race organisers who went to the bother of providing guys like you with a race to complain about after?

slagging off race organisers? Please quote where I did that or else apologise for putting words in my mouth

At the risk of repeating myself I am wondering what you meant by saying it wasn't a patch on the NE.

You could have only meant the race organisation or the race itself? Or perhaps you could clarify am I missing something?

What else could 'not be a patch'?

The quality of a race is determined by its riders.

I was posing a question above.

If I knew what the 'words from your mouth' meant exactly in your previous posts I would then be in a position to apologise or otherwise. Perhaps you could clarify.

if you had just posed the question he would have answered it. Try not troll as part of the post, works wonders for better replies.

Sure once Diarmuid clarifies what was 'not a patch' then all subsequent stuff can be reconsidered.

Some people may have determined his original 'not a patch' comment as trolling.

I suspect you guys are more concerned with the sensitivities of each other here than with those of others.

Who? he never suggested something was wrong with the race? he just said another race was better. I've been in races which were better than others, hardly shocking now is it?

if the race organisers were worried about his thoughts i'm sure they could post and ask. Generally its nice to be civil in your posts Bob. Hardly much to ask?

And you still haven't apologised to him.

:D Yes... I was the fool on the first lap. Thought I might as well try something. Was hoping for a few other to come across but as you say, in handicap races, there's not many that will try.

I thought we were working ok, just that A4 bunch seems to like to chase for the sake of it & and then sit up. Going on the flat section probably wasn't the best idea...

yeah but I guess that's just the dynamics of the A4's. (ie beginners)

I am wondering about his context in this instance, he has since done everything subsequently to avoid answering the question - is he an advisor to Brian Cowen by any chance?

if the race organisers were worried about his thoughts i'm sure they could post and ask. Generally its nice to be civil in your posts Bob. Hardly much to ask?
