Just out of interest really, and as this is a mainly male environment, be interesting to see the results, as the perception out there is that all blokes love football. It is both one of the biggest sporting and televisual events out there after all.

Will you be one of those who Sky+'s the group games of no meaning, just to check out such and such a player, or maybe you are just someone who will watch the bigger games.

For the record, I'll be watching as much of it as I can. Also for the record, As is traditional for me, I'll be following Spain. In no way related is the fact that the Spanish jersey I recently bought looks very well on me :D

Probably watch the bigger games. Not a great fan of soccer, but I do watch the WC. I would support Argentina, and failing them, the other South American teams, African teams and Spain and Portugal.

Final Prediction: Argentina V USA. :D

I wouldnt watch every game as there are likely to be some stinkers in it but I will watch all the bigger teams and all of Englands games too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 103 ✭✭eskimoparty

Ill watch most of the games that I can, Im going to be working away from home for two weeks and itll make it easy to pass the time. Will probably follow England the closest considering I watch the Premiership every weekend and know all their players etc.
Other than that itll be Argentina!

Me too! I'm going to Spain for a holiday during the 1st week of the group stages so all the lads in the group got Spain jerseys :D

Naturally I'll watch quite a few of the games but not the ones with two poor sides playing. Quality wise though I'd still take the Champions league anyday.

Any game I'm not working for I'll watch, provided I don't get a better offer eg: the weather's very nice and something cool is happening.
That said, i wont exactly be asking for time off work to see specific matches either.

There are a few I have marked down to sky plus.Brazil Vs Portugal is on early afternoon so wont get to watch it live.

Yeah, will be watching as many games as I physically can. Hopefully there'll be some good ones!

Final will be Brazil v. Spain, with Brazil winning 2-1...

I really hope that England win it, but my head is saying the above sentence will more than likely happen...

As many as possible the more obscure the better. I've been watching the official FIFA films for each of the last World Cups back to 1982 over the weekend. First week or so with 3 games a day

I'd like North Korea/South Africa/Honduras/New Zealand to do relatively well. It's the 'obscure' teams that make the tournament...Ghana last time, Cameroon and Jamaica before.

Not interested, however ill be around South Africa during the games so if I manage to swing a ticket for a game then I'm sure ill go to it.

No interest tbh, nothing against football, just never got into it. My missus is delighted :D Not a sports fan in general, and being that I'm from Limerick and have zero interest in rugby as well that makes me some kind of pariah :P

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,492 ✭✭✭Thomas828

I'll be following as many matches as I can, especially in the group stages. To the best of my knowledge, this is the first World Cup tournament where North and South Korea will both be playing. But as far as I can work out, the only way those two will meet is if they both reach the final!

I'll be taking my break from work at 12.30 so I'll watch the afternoon games. I'll miss the 3pm games because of work. I'll get to watch the evening games at home. No doubt I'll be Reading the paper/Internet everyday for analysis.

Rugby is my main sport and Ireland vs new Zealand in rugby is on same time as England vs USA in football-I'll watch the footy.

Same here, only for the fact that there were St George's flags and bunting everywhere in Asda at the weekend I wouldn't have known that the World Cup was even approaching.

I've absolutely no interest in soccer at all anymore which is probably a good thing now that I have a newborn baby to deal with :D

I may watch the final or another match if only to at least be able to say 'something' about what will no doubt be a very popular topic of conversation in the office here :)

You never know, you might actually enjoy it if you sit down to watch it???

I try to watch every game I can. You might watch a match between two brutal teams and still find it great.

Any two teams not in the same group can meet before the final. If NKR win their group and SKR come second they will enter the same half of the draw and can meet in the semis.

Lil or no interest in football since it turned into an olympic diving competition. If a match suddenly finds it's way onto the screen il watch it for a lil while before all the muppetry begins.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,730 ✭✭✭✭entropi

Not a big soccer fan by any stretch of the imagination, but will be sort of cheering on Spain to win it...

I'll probably watch the bigger games, with the other ones relegated due to me either reading books or learning electric guitar.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,817 ✭✭✭myflipflops

I'll watch every minute for every game for work. If it wasn't for work, I'd do it for pleasure anyway.

My love of football has lessened over the previous few years but the World Cup still does it for me.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20,649 ✭✭✭✭CDfm

I am not a huge fan, but, if the French get knocked out I will watch the highlights. I am a bit petty like that ;)

you get to watch football for work, dude, i want that job

I will be glued to the TV from when it starts. The football isn't always for the purist unlike the European championships but you can not beat it as a tournament. At least now I won't have to bring the portable TV everywhere now that the games will be broadcast on line as well. There isn't a world wide sporting event like it. It ranges from the sublime of the Spanish and the Brazilians to the absurdity surrounding the likes of the England team, Diego Maradona and the RTE panel. If I had the money I would have been there regardless of whether Ireland qualified or not.

I will watch most games, although Ireland v NZ will mean recording English match.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 23,316 ✭✭✭✭amacachi

I'll more than likely watch every single minute of almost every single match live. The exceptions being the last group games because they tend to be on simultaneously.
I'm not a massive soccer fan but am a sports nut in general and never pass up a chance to watch major tournaments.

I thought the Irish rugby game was early Saturday morning?

Nope, no interest what so ever, although I shall be in Africa when the final is on so I think there will be a bit of a buzz about it round the place so will no doubt get roped into watching it asa few of my mates are huge soccer fans.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 127 ✭✭migozarad

Will watch selected games of argentina, spain, brazil&holland. The other games will be an exhibiton of turgid, cynical play..England will exemplify this and provide a nice panacea for insomniacs for the short duration of their involvement in the tournament.Overall the World Cup is a triumph for hype over substance and the real winners will be corporate sponsors&fifa.

IMO infinitely more enjoyable as there are so many different sports, a lot of which are actually exciting (unlike soccer) and virtually every country in the world is involved.

Every country in the world is also involved in the World Cup competition as well and as for olympic sports being more exciting then football (like sailing, equestrian, shooting & handball) well if you say so squire;).

I've deleted a whole load of off-topic posts from this thread.

It's a simple question, will you watch the games or not? It's not a discussion on whether the Olympics is better, whether there are drugs in the sport etc.

    Please stay on topic :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,385 ✭✭✭✭D'Agger

Jobless in Cork barring weekends so I'll be glued to the couch eating pop tarts, quite possibly drinking for the games and searching online for jobs when the analysis is on :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,786 ✭✭✭Monkeybonkers

I will be watching every minute of every game if I can. I love big events like the World Cup. Spain or Brazil to win it. Torres (if he's fit) top scorer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,977 ✭✭✭Greyfox

Can't wait for the greatest show on earth to start, I've made the girlfriend aware that she'll be seeing less of me this month. Their will be some dull group games so the plan is to SKY plus most of the group games (that way I can fast-forward bits if I want) and watch the rest. (It should be easy to not miss even one goal as I can also sky plus the highlights)

Once it gets to the knockout stage things get really exciting and I'd pretty much class the matches as more important then life and death!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,780 ✭✭✭JohnK

Nope wont be watching any of it unless someone chains me to a seat to be honest

Every minute of any game that's on RTE, unless some fcuker tries to order a drink before or aftet half-time when I'm working, imagine the rudeness of it.:P

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 767 ✭✭✭Odats

As many matches as I can. I'll be supporting Holland and hope for an early English exit as imagine if they won the World Cup you'd never hear the end of it.
Spain are the team to beat followed by the Brazilians and Argentinians.

Is knowing the North Korean squad (not just the first eleven) off by heart a sign that I have purchased and studied too many world cup guides?

On a related DID YOU KNOW note - are you aware the Swedish referee who decided that Henry's goal was legal (even though 4 offenses were committed before the ball was put in the net, 2 offsides and 2 handballs) is going to the world cup as are his team of officials while we stay at home, supping beer and cussing the French and to think that people would question FIFA

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,786 ✭✭✭Monkeybonkers

There seem to be a couple of refs who have questionable records who will be officiating in this World Cup. One of the most notorious seems to be Carlos Eugenio Simon, a Brazilian referee. At best, he’s a bad referee; at worst, he’s horribly corrupt. He's been suspended a couple of times in Brazil because he's so bad and now he's going to be refereeing in the World Cup finals. It beggars belief that he's been picked by FIFA for the biggest tournament in world football. One of the Brazilian clubs even wrote to FIFA asking that he be removed from their list of World Cup referees! He'll be the ref for Englands opening game so hopefully his incompetence won't ruin that or any other subsequent games he officiates at.

so the vast majority will be watching it in some shape or another.

    Next question:

Who are you supporting and why?
    Who is gonna win it?

Who are you supporting ? Spain, its traditonal, even before the Rafalution it was always Spain tbh. Since the time us Nordies beat them in the 82 World Cup

Who is gonna win it? Can't see past Spain tbh.
