Should the Queen of England be welcomed to Ireland?

Inspired by the "Irish in the BA" thread and continuing in the same vein, how do the posters of boards feel about the Queen visiting our shores? Should she be welcomed as rapturously as Bill Clinton and JFK were? Or should she be denied entry or any arrival protested? Or something in between?

As for me, I believe that she should be allowed visit, and welcomed too. This is not to forget our difficult history, but the head of state of our nearest neighbour, a state where millions of Irish people have gone to work (and even occasionally fight for)over the years should be able to visit. After all, the British are people with him we have probably more in common that any other nation in the world, economically and socially.

Then again, maybe I am a quisling west Brit.

She should be welcomed diplomatically, I doubt I would go to the airport as an Irish citizen to welcome her though.

Yes, if we can welcome Paisley to the Dáil, why not the Queen

Obviously yes, because if you disagree you're a "dissident republican" who deserves to be beaten with a rolled - up copy of the Sunday Independent:rolleyes:

Can I just reply "I don't give a damn whether she comes or not." I wouldn't treat her arrival any different to any normal tourist.

I predict this thread will turn into name-calling, whataboutery and petty tantrums from both the pseudo-Ra heads and the Cruiser/Myers/Harris lickspittles.

Elton John is always welcome in Ireland....

We dont go to the airport to see anyone?

Unless it's the irish football team who went through a world cup finals campaign without winning a match and scoring 2 goals in 5 games or a suspected drugs cheat in the Atlanta Olympics. We'd go to the Airport to see them alright.

Yeah, she might as well. I mean, I can't imagine she'll be a great laugh in the pub or anything, but she's as welcome as anybody to pull up a chair.

I think she should be welcomed with open arms, then be greeted by Mary McAllesse in a public ceremony where our President can officially forgive the British for their 80 million years of opression, then share a plate of spuds & some poitin with the Queen & we can all move on.

Maybe I'm completely wrong, sh1t, I don't know where to start here!
Its not about old wounds or 800 years of oppression etc etc, Its something much much deeper, I'm not a 'RA head or anywhere near it but I have this faint feeling of betrayal about the whole British thing, we spent hundreds of years trying to chuck them out and yet day by day we suck in British media and all the pathetic Brit "Z" listers sorry lives and watch premiership football (though I suppose there's hardly a Brit playing) its like we're being turned back into West Brits by osmosis! The queen (deliberate small q) visiting would just be the final confirmation. Maybe I should seek medical attention:eek: ( or maybe you'll kinda know what I mean;))

No, we can't afford to furnish the pompous luxury she is used to. If Britain had an elected a head of state then I suspect the vast majority of people here would have no problem welcoming that head of state. A head of state should be chosen by the people, not the womb they emerge from.

Ireland is probably the mosy American influenced country in Europe, more influenced by the UK than some care to admit and more European than our UK neighbours. But we're still Irish & that's the beauty of it.

If you people can't or don't want to understand or accept that, there really is nothing you can do for them.

I dont understand why. I dont see how you can feel "betrayed" by the media attention given British z list celebrities. It says more about the people who pay attention to this than it does about the people themselves.I mean the Irish media would never dare big up Irish Z list celebrities would they? The British press have the good sense to ignore the vast majority of these irish so called celebs with the odd exception of course.

I agree 100%. She's a head of state and I'd like to think the irish nation would be mature enough to treat it in the way you've suggested.

We spent years trying to kick the Brits out because they were foreign opressors. The heroes of 1916 fought for one thing - Ireland's freedom & the right to self determination. They won & we got that.

We are now free to choose what we want to do with that freedom, be it watching the Premiership, buying an English tabloid, shopping in Boots or welcoming the Queen to visit.

It's all a matter of choice. To try & supress free choice would be similar to what the British did when they were the opressors.
