Monaghan 'goalkeeper'

Story of the day for me was the Monaghan Reserve goalie leaving the team this morning when he was told he wasn't playing after the No 1 keeper got injured. Can't blame him, but then defender Darren Hughes plays in nets and keeps a clean sheet!

This is an interview with Darren right at the final whistle. He doesn't want to say much about the Reserve keeper but he fancies the job. Some decent saves here too.. Can't remember this ever happening before but I'm sure someone will know of a precedent.

I can't understand. Who did they want in goals if the sub keeper wasn't selected?

I can't blame him. If it were me i would have done the same thing. Busting your bollox on the off chance of getting a game and then being treated like that

Apparently Hughes had played in goal at minor and u 21 level for Monaghan but it is a real insult to the sub keeper. But it paid off in fairness

There seems to be an internal dispute within the monaghan camp with the original sub goalie Duffy. I watched the BBC interview of Mc Eaneny and you got a very clear impression that there is something going on behind the scene with the original sub goalie

You would have to imagine there is something to that, otherwise a very harsh way to deal with a panel member who had probably busted his ass all year. Probably not a bigger insult for a keeper than to be dropped for an outfield player.

    Agree 100%.

What the hell were they having him there for at all, if when it came to it he wasn't even 2nd choice?? Terrible insult to the guy that an outfield player is chosen ahead of him.
I'm sure he was training away for the last few months as much as anyone. Ok accepting he was 2nd choice, but ready to step in if Duffy got injured/suspended or whatever. How sh1te must he have felt when told the full back was picked ahead of him.

Now he will go back to his club, where he probably been missing due to being on the county side, and he will be slagged off big time there. And in the co championship, the opposition will go to town on that. Horrible way to treat a guy, and as well as they played yesterday, I really hope they are beaten the next day.

What bothers me most here is that McEnaney made three phone calls the night before the match, to Darren Hughes, JP Mone and Eoin Lennon, to tell them they'd be playing in different positions, but he didn't think to call the reserve keeper Sean Gorman to let him know Hughes would be taking his shirt.

Banty has defended his decision, and Hughes did have a good game, but there's no way you can spin this one. It looks like a case of very poor people skills. Who will want the Monaghan no. 16 shirt now, you bust your guts training all winter and for what?

At what stage was the sub keeper informed? Had he already travelled to Casement? Did he know the first choice was injured before he went?

Hard to see any situation where the manager was justified in treating him like that

It must be a Monaghan thing, I seem to remember years ago a similar incident with Monaghan United playing an outfield player in goal despite having a reserve keeper which is possibly even more of an insult than in gaelic

The sub keeper was informed on the morning of the game, just before the team bus was about to leave for Casement Park, at which point he got up and left. The other three players had already been informed of the changes the previous evening.
