Effectiveness of push ups and crunches for strength training

    hey guys just wondering your opinions on the effectiveness of my work out. I do 60 push ups (4 reps of 15), 100 bicycle crunches (5 reps of 20), and something i saw online called the bridge to strenghten my lower back muscles, here i hold the position for 20 seconds 5 times. Its only a quick work out, taking no more than 25 minutes.

    I only rest for 30 seconds between reps as I have heard these shorter more intense work outs have some merit in strength training. My goal from my work outs is really just to improve my strength and conditioning for sports rather than to become built or anything. Also as a side note I have had a recurring groin injury and I've been told improving the core muscles could help reduce the amount of injuries i receive in the area.

    Do bodyweight squats and get a chin-up bar and you could have yourself a pretty nice little workout. I also prefer sit-ups to crunches because of the involvement of the hip flexors. People say your abs aren't targeted dynamically this way but they don't need to be. They're postural muscles after all.

    Also, if you're not tired by the end of your workout try reducing the amount of rest between sets or increase the number of reps in each set. You can only get so strong with calisthenics so it would be good to turn it into an aerobic workout as much as possible also.

    I lift weights but also do a little calisthenics routine a few times a week. It's usually something like this:

    20 bodyweight squats
    15 sit-ups
    10 push-ups
    5 chin-ups

    Usually I would do all the reps above in a row in the quickest time possible and repeat 3-5 times with a 30 second break each round. That's the added aerobic component I'm talking about. I'm fairly wrecked after the whole thing.
