Face protection - Full face betty or shades only Arny???

I’m definitely the full face Betty type :o - I don't think I'll enjoy the game if I start losing teeth!

The amount of people I've noticed wearing just safety goggles is unbelievable, I really don't understand it? A shot to the face has got to sting!

I was playing in a mixed airsoft / paintball place last week (game zones weren't mixed) and I couldn’t help but think, the chances of a stray paintball hitting someone aren't that slim! - And I’ve got news for you; shades aren't going to stop a paint ball!

    What are your thoughts?

used to wear full face but now look more hardcore in shooting glasses, j/k i always found it too warm and restrictive in full face ie using iron sights was next to near impossible. picked up a paid of shooting glasses and it solved all problems (except lower face) got hit a couple of times but i just find it more pratical to wear the glasses

Always wore a pair of shooting glasses, a shot to the face stings, but being able to breathe easily and not be covered in sweat is worth it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,511 ✭✭✭Damo 2k9

    Full face for me
Thinking of getting a pair of goggles/glasses for the summer tho and then getting a mesh lower face mask :)

As you say - pain is just weakness leaving the body

Could anyone recommend a good pair of shooting glasses pls?

I can't stand having something on my face while playing. Makes breathing that little bit more difficult so it's harder to steady my breath when aiming up a shot - it also screws up your aim when looking down a sight. If I'm going around a corner or entering a room I generally just grip my shemagh between my teeth - protects my teeth and most of my face when needed.

Check out the Bollé range, been using a pair myself since last Summer, couldn't reccomend them more.

Or check out pretty much anything by ESS. I have a pair of Ice 2.4 glasses (interchangeable lens), and a pair of V12-Advancer goggles (interchangeable lens too with passive anti-fogging), and I know quite a few folks that run with the larger more "tradtional" ESS Goggles (e.g. the Turbo-fan model, etc.)

You can see much better in shades too. You have your peripheral vision too which is where your detection is the best. Much easier to stalk someone in a mask, So keep wearing them guys ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 553 ✭✭✭McGilla

I rented full face paintball style mask, which kept steaming up, and that was more annoying than Jedward!

But a guy lent me use of small full face mesh mask and it was great, I could still use the iron sights and no fogging up!

Pain is weakness leaving the body but...Not the face!!!

Glasses are my preference, but I have seen many not so minor injuries in the fight between an burst of BB's and an uncovered face, so I am investing in a Shemagh to replace my unbvelievably hot balaclava.

WOuld never go full face mask thing where the goggles are attached to the mask, cause I feel it restricts movement, but I have heard good things about the lower mesh face halfmasks from QAS.

But, would never trust mesh completely. I used to, and then saw a few vids of a man shooting BB'es at a mesh mask, and then saw the fragments go throuhg. The Mask was relatively fine, but the BB's splintered past the mesh, and took away some of the paper behind it. That threw my confidence in them out the window

A pair of bolle trackers with stamped steel inserts, coupled with a lower face mask.
It's the business were ever I am :)

I used to use one of those sensei mesh masks, never really liked them, I was always slipping around on the stock when trying to look down the sights, and when the sun was shining down at your face the mesh glinted making it harder to see, atm i use ESS goggles, love them (look deadly too:D ) and wore a shemagh yoke around my face, but I don't really feel that would help an awful lot with a smack to the face/mouth, so I'm gonna have a go at using the lower part of the sensei with them (cutting a bit out of each cheek so I can aim comfortably, don't really mind a hit to the cheek, teeth I really wanna protect)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 988 ✭✭✭evilrobotshane

Potentially, pain is just teeth leaving the body.

I'm too damn pretty to risk losing teeth, so I wear a lower face mask as a separate piece. Probably not such a concern for all y'all ugly people.

    Would love to use these:
    gog001.jpg?t=1275660825
But the frames dont hold up to 1J impacts.

So I usually end up wearing balaclava and Sensei as so:

Don't mean to sound creepy, but do not get this unless you are a fairly imposing figure. The last time I was skirmishing there was a little kid wearing this, and it just looked stupid. But, iof you can pull it off, I would say it does look class (just like Jack in the tunnel, even scared me on my couch:eek:)

I have one of these, its more comfy than most, only use it in CQB though

when i started driving motorbikes i bought a 700 euro helmet and someone asked me why i spend so much i had a simple answer

"if you feel your head is worth €50 buy a €50 helmet"

same stands for me in airsoft, not the price you pay but the quality of the protection you buy.

If you feel you dont need your teeth go around with super shades on..

me personally outdoor - stamped steel goggles and neoprene face mask
indoors - my custom helmet - stamped steel face and full head
    protection.
whatever your budget is remember one simple truth , and i coin a phrase i read on another thread "your teeth only grow back once"

Hmm reminds me of the boot story. A rich man buys a pair of great boots for 100 euros, the poor man can only afford the 10 euro pair. His are the same in every repect bar quality. So a few months on the rich mans boots are fine but the poor man has to buy a new pair. The rich mans boots last him 3 years and then he repairs them, the poor man in the end spends 360 euro on his boots. The rich man stays rich, the poor man remains poor.

Same applies for your gear, you will spend more money on low quality gear than those who spend that bit more. They will reap the benifit while the poor sod who bought the cheap stuff will have to pay out more and more untill he realises to upgrade there standards. Be it glasses, full or half masks masks, mesh, scarfs, remember dont cheap out, you may lose more than a few bob on cheap gear

No-one thought of gum shields yet?

Awkward if you use radios. Personally, mesh goggles with shemagh. Small bit of padding in the shemagh to protect the mouth for any close range engagements.

There are a few airsofters out there that wear gum sheilds

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 816 ✭✭✭gungun

Small bit of padding in the shemagh

Well, I think I'll do that instead of hacking away at the mask, kicking myself for not thinking to do that:P

My Swiss Arms Pro-tactical goggles with the foam surround are super comfy, wear them with a neck warmer thing pulled up over my mouth. The warmer has a piece of neoprene sewn into it to offer extra protection but allowing me to pull it down if I need to.

Tried a cut down gum shield but it's so hard to talk. Wish they sold Protechs in Europe. Looking to get one of the QAS mesh masks soon too.

Also have a koei man face mask with built in goggles which I have yet to use in a proper game but can't wait to try out :p

I use both a custom full face mask made from an old russian gasmask with mesh inserted in the eyes and a pair of bolle shooting glasses depending on what sort of game I'm playing and what mood I'm in.

Shots to the face don't hurt that much, been playing most weekends since 2007 and I've not lost a tooth using glasses yet, I mean if you're that precious about your teeth sure, wear a full face, it's hardly something to waste your time worrying about when you're out at a game though.

CQB is definately fall face territory, but outdoors glasses will do just fine, provided that you're willing to run the risk of losing a tooth if you're unlucky.

I did lose a tooth a few years ago to a stray dig in a fight, it's not really that bad, and sure you'd never know one of my teeth is false now. Cost a bit to get fixed though. Even knowing the risks I still play in glasses, so I guess it's just down to personal choice, what are you prepared to put up with?

Ive got both versions, if your going to use this kind make sure you actually pay for the expensive version not the plastic one, plastic ones have been known to have weaker mesh that can deform too much (plus the padding is nowhere near as nice)

I personally prefer the version you showed to the actual skull style one, it's more comfy for my big head

Was in reb barn about two months back and this Kid just had a pair glasses on, no lower face protection. Came back after one of the games and the poor guy got his front teeth shot out scared the bjasus out of me. I always wear lower face projection now.

I wear the ESS fan googles( cost a pretty penny but great) and a neoprene ski lower face mask.

    and this balaclava;

hopefully they go well together, Im trying to go for the SAS anti-terrorism look, while covering my face too!

But I can see it getting quite warm!

Full Face at the mo although I'll be buying glasses and a separate bottom face guard over the summer. Perhaps QAS's Mesh faceguards - They keep the air flowing nice and easy. Full face plastic masks are uncomfortable after a game or two

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 281 ✭✭delta-boy

I did get shot in the mouth a couple of times, I was very lucky I didnt lose any teeth.

Now I just close my mouth when I'm running to/from pellets. :D

I think ess with fan and mesh mouth gaurd is the best bet!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,902 ✭✭✭MagicIRL

What is a good mouth guard then? I like the idea of mesh/plastic glasses as opposed to an acutal facemask but I've no idea what would make good cover for the mouth area. Help please!

bitter end and qas both make a nice mesh lower fasce mask know, brass guard also make one but there supply is a little hit and miss at times

Whats the name of the mouth piece?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,902 ✭✭✭MagicIRL

Is that the only option for mouth guarding (Separate from a full face mask)

Its abit pricey for what it is in my eyes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 191 ✭✭SpookyBastard

Well you can go for a neoprene lower mask (some recommend shemaghs but I'd prefer more protection) but they get very warm and sweaty and the steelmesh masks will stop beebs better.
