Reckon this game warrants its own thread.

    Sligo (SF v Mayo): P Greene; C Harrison, N McGuire, R Donovan, K Cawley, B Phillips, J Davey; T Taylor, S Gilmartin; M Breheny, A Costello, E O’Hara; C McGee, K Sweeney, D Kelly.

    Mayo (SF v Sligo): D Clarke; C Barrett, G Cafferkey, K Higgins; D Vaughan, T Cunniffe, K McLoughlin; T Parsons, R McGarrity; A Moran, S O’Shea, T Mortimer; C Mortimer, A Freeman, E Varley.

Eamonn O'Hara back for another tilt, Alan Costello squaring up to his old team mates.

Mayo making 5 changes from the ignominious league final defeat, 4 championship debutants.

Sligo have a great chance to pull off a bit of a surprise here, Alan Dillon is a massive loss for Mayo. Will be interesting to see what sort of numbers show up on a bank holiday Saturday evening for the televised game.

At the same time, Mayo have an opportunity to atone for their previous outing, some very decent performances in the league have to mean something.

John O'Mahony's last chance saloon this time too I would think.

Not easy being a Liverpool/Mayo supporter at the moment, but here's hoping ;)

Really surprised that Aidan O'Sea is not playing!

Thats a really young team mayo have picked...still though, i reckon mayo by 4 points.

I dunno...mayo have the stronger bench and that will probably win it for them, Having players like Aidan O'Sea, Pat Hart and Peader Gardinar to call on is great.

Then again Sligo have Eammon O'Hara too on the bench :o

(*wait he is playing from the start)

Can see it being close for most of the game but Mayo pulling away in the final quarter when they start using the bench.

I reckon it'll be tight enough, close at half time. Hopefully Sligo can win it in the second half but I'm going to say Mayo by two, with late scores

Anyway, 1-04 to 0-5 for Mayo just coming up to half time. Hasn't been the best game so far but it's still all to play for in the second half and Sligo will have a fairly strong breeze at their backs. Freeman at full forward for Mayo has been very dangerous every time the ball has come near him.

Crowd is non-existent. I don't think I've even been Markievicz and I've seen nothing today to entice me there.

    Hope Sligo win though :).

Shocking Game...Sick Football from both teams living on frees, poor opposition play etc...Connaught Championship is a joke.

In the lead for the first time. Come on sligo :D

I don't think that's quite true. Aren't Mayo one of the best teams in the country? And Galway can beat anyone on their day.

Eamonn O'Hara is great. Won that Connacht title in 2007 on his own

Mayo are the most-overrated team in Ireland. They have won nothing but pity from others due to their inept displays in Croker. And as for Galway they have not won a match of note since the 01 Final.

What about those wins over Mayo? They count for nothing  Hate to think what you think of Dublin so.

Before you go slinging mud at other provincial championships, the last team to win Munster outside Cork and Kerry was Clare in 1992. Before that it was Tipperary in 1935. That's beside the point though as this is the match thread for Sligo v Mayo.

It's a very poor game though and the ref seems to be trying his best to let Mayo back into it.

Sweeeney scored one of the points of the year so far. Mayo coming back.

Top class scoring from Sligo in the second half

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,096 ✭✭✭An Citeog

    What a point!

Also, David Kelly is deadly accurate from anywhere within 30 metres. He was superb for DCU this year in the Sigerson aswell.

Sligo haven't looked like getting a goal.Mayo always look dangerous going forward, wouldn't be too surprised to see them get one yet. Good point for Sligo there from that ex Mayo player, can't think of his name. Keelan Cawley is playing great on his debut at wing back

If anyone thought Mayo's performance in the league final was a flash in the pan, today proved it wasn't. Congrats to Sligo who earned that victory.

Michael Davitt, Louis Walsh, Grainuaile, Mary Robinson, Inda Kinny, Can you hear me Inda Kinny?

Your boys took a hell of a beating.

Oh so true!why oh why did mayo let conor mortimer take frees, why not freeman!!

Absolutely shocking display from the referee, especially in the last 15 mins.

For years I've heard lads say how referees try to help the "big" teams out if they are behind but I never believed it and often argued against it but by God that ref was doing his best to get Mayo back in the match. Even with his help Mayo still couldn't get back into it. Terrible.

    Very poor ref.

In fainres a few people here few eeks ago after the league finals said that Sligo would give Mayo run for their money.

They got it bang on. Taught Mayo would win with bit to spare, but same old failings come back to haunt them. Some of them need kick in rear after today. If I was Mayo fan I be sick

Sadly for the umpteenth time in 60 years the Mayo Football team prove to be an embarrassment to the county:rolleyes: - Counties like Tippererary, Wexford etc. will win a football All Ireland before this lot follows up 1951.:(

Last year he thought he was Michael Jackson, this year he thought he was Wayne Rooney!! What a plonker!

Well done to Sligo on their win this evening. They worked as a team unit, fought for every ball and every player on the field with them was giving 100% committment, they had far more desire and hunger than Mayo.

As for Mayo this result leaves a lot of questions to be asked. Their will be a lot of people questioning the future of John O'Mahony as team manager but i personally think that the Mayo team needs a major overhaul, their were a number of players out there this evening who showed no fight at all when the chips were down, they were an embarrasment to the jersey.

Finally i thought some of the refereeing decisions this evening were puzzling, the ref awarded some very soft frees to Mayo and penalised Sligo with strange decisions at times.

The ref was quite poor and made bad decisions for both teams, but at least nobody can use him as the reason why Mayo lost , better team clearly won on the day!

I've seen enough Mayo teams to know that this always happens. Produce great footballers but have this knack of implosion.

Great chance for another team to win Connacht this year.

Has to be considered shock of the championship so far.Mayo were not at the races and it is quite clear the league final has buried them.

What I don't understand is why McGarrity and Trevor Mortimor were kept on the pitch.McGarrity should have walked for his off the ball antics with Eamon O Hara. Not like McGarrity.

I thought Shaun Davey had a great game.Chipped in with a score at a vital time before half time.

Its quite clear that Mayo have peaked for the season. It was too good to be true for them to beat the likes of Tyrone,Cork,Kerry,Monaghan,Derry and Galway in one sweep. Now they are losing to teams from division 3.

I would have said Louth beating Kildare would have being more of a shock.

Massive massive win for Sligo, just goes to show teams can carry good league form into the championship. Mayo did not look up for it at all tonight, Conor Mortimer was a total waste of space out there. Other guys like Andy Moran and McGarrity were seriously disappointing. David Kelly is no one season wonder for Sligo, he's developing into one of the best young forwards in the country. Him and Jonathan Davey were Sligo's best players tonight. Galway will have it all to do to stop them.

That Mayo team has needed an overhaul for years but the same politics that got O Mahoney into the job as manager is at play when "selecting" players.
Fair play to Sligo, fully deserved victory, but hopefully this is the one kick in the backside Mayo have had that might actually be acted upon.

I am not surprised about that result but as a Mayo person I am disgusted at the level of failure we can tolerate. Yeah, we;re not world beaters but we should be doing far better than we are at inter county level.

Sligo were by far and away the better team and deserved their victory.

Congratulations and best of luck in the games ahead.

Mayo were poor and even lacked the desire needed at this level.

O'Mahoney will be gone unless and even if Mayo do a lazarus like win the all-Ireland or get to a semifinal.

The chances of this are slim and none and slim ain't been seen for ages.

New management needed for Mayo with the ability to instill the desire and belief for Mayo to be sucessful.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,335 ✭✭✭✭UrbanSea

Still can't believe how awful Mayo were. First fifteen minutes or so I thought it was going to be a white wash where Mayo were going to run all over us. Happy out, they just didn't put in the effort.

Ya it looks likely that someone else will win Connaught now ;)

Plenty of talent, no leadership (on or off the pitch) and no desire! Kevin Walsh won the tactical battle hands down.

Well done Sligo on a deserved win and good luck against Galway....3 teams in Connaught now!

Of we go to the qaulifiers :(

sligo are one of the most improved teams in the country and they may well be the strongest team in connacht in the next few years...
