Looks like finally some official news from htc!
The wait is finally over! According to HTC’s Plurk account, the Android 2.1 upgrade for the GSM HTC Hero will start hitting handsets some time tomorrow, June 4th. Over the past month, HTC has been busy rolling out Android 2.1 to the CDMA variants of their handsets in the U.S. market (Droid Eris and Sprint Hero).
While the announcement from HTC may bring a huge sigh of relief to Hero owners, we would like to stress that there is no guarantee that the Android 2.1 upgrade will be making its way to Hero owners in Europe. We’ll be keeping a close eye on this story for the next day or so and keep you updated if we start getting official update reports form around the globe.

On June 4, 2010 to open up the wireless software update, the main update function as follows: Android 2.1 operating system upgrade!
System will continue to send updates prompt, when you receive a system prompt as long as you can by clicking Download or wireless network connection 3G/GPRS way to complete your phone system updates. Note: We recommend you to choose to have free Wi-Fi environment, download the update. If you are currently using 3G network, the download may have to pay the additional cost carriers, please make sure to have unlimited Internet access rates apply for rentals before use.

I got an email yesterday from HTC Ireland saying that the 2.1 update will start in June. Firstly with a with a small update to prepare the phone followed by the 2.1 update so I'd imagine it will be the end of the month before the real update happens
thanks for your email. HTC will be providing a free update to Éclair for European HTC Hero variants starting in June. Anyone owning a HTC Hero will receive an initial preparatory update, shortly followed by the full Éclair update. For the full update, we would recommend using a free Wi Fi hotspot or an unlimited data plan, otherwise standard data charges may apply. Thank you for contacting HTC.
    Best regards, Aaron W, HTC.

    Wow.... today. Holy crap. :)

I know most forum visitors already know this, but if you have custom firmware (Villain, Cronos, aHero, BeHero etc), then DON'T do this update or you will lose access to your recovery console. This means you won't be able to update your firmware to a custom firmware any more. Wait for your favourite ROM to be updated to the GSM Kernal and use that instead.

So would I be correct in thinking that custom ROMs are going to improve in both performance and battery life with this official update to work off? Should be good!

The new radio is working fine on Meteor (villainRom)...

    anyone know how this works?

I got my Hero off meteor (PAYG) and just stuck my own sim card in to it (the phone was got as a present for me) so the number the phone was bought with is different to the number it is being used with. Will that impact my ability to get the update? Will I have to do it in a manual way?

If I stick the other sim card in it (the one it was bought with, sitting at home somewhere I hope) will that work?

Or will it work regardless of the sim card that is in it?

It will work regardless of what sim card is in it!

Here's hoping the Desire 2.2 update follows suit soon :(

Everyone is going to be staring at their phones waiting for an update notification.

I presume the SIM doesn't matter Mitch, HTC don't have a list of phones numbers or anything. I'm guessing there is a service on the phone that is listening for update notifications. Once it sees something it will tell you there is an update available.

Without trying to sound stupid whats the main features in this update?

yeah - i've connected to the work wifi for the first time in ages, come on update, come on update!!

(prob won't happen until next week....)

this is not a google update so I would say it will be carrier dependent.

so are you thinking I need to put the 'correct' sim card in it? Both cards are meteor so I am still using the phone on the 'correct' network.

What exactly are the advantages to 2.1 ? Im using the modaco 3.2 and its quick and importantly works. Is there anything that is a "must upgrade" feature ?

Checked a few out here - nothing mind blowing

If your using a custom rom based on 2.1 then you're not going to notice any changes.

For me, the blue tooth upgrade is a big one of interest (may allow my car kit to read text messages, though i doubt it) as it offers more features for sending files and recieving.

    HTML5 support.

There are updates to Google Maps as far as I know (Voice search and navigation, turn by turn directions)

More apps would be available in the market place.

Market place itself seems to have been improved which I'm looking forward to. The market place app itself isn't the best.

Bluetooth is definitely something I want, and Google Maps too.

Is their Live wallpapers in this as well?

sat nav, i.e. turn by turn
    improved speed of os
some apps only work on 2.1 e.g. twitter
    to name a few

the important thing is the carrier you are using, so I d say you can leave any Meteor sim in.
you might actually get the update earlier checking if its available on the HTC website. Or xda im sure..

nothing mind blowing then in the update - btw modaco's roms are based on 1.5 at the mo. As I said Im pretty happy with MCR 3.2 - its fast, no issues, the most professional rom to date. I dont want to ditch that just for some jazzy wallpaper or even sat nav doest interest me - google maps with gps tracking (as it is now) is fine.

longer battery, better media player and an addblocker for the browser would be good

    its not that simple.
as it is now, 1.5 and 1.6 are the oldest of the systems around. from a dev point of view, they are very limiting. do not expect devs to keep catering for them indefinitely as that would limit the implementation of all the nice features 2.2 uses. as it is now, I think once the % of 1.5/1.6 is around 10% of the total, devs will start cease support.
Im not going to bore you with how many compromises I had to do to keep the apps i write compatible with older sdks..

I only recently switched from Modaco's latest to the latest Villainrom, and I can tell you that 2.1 is a must have. Better performance, and just a little bit slicker all round. I'd recommend it. I'm sure there'll be a new Modaco rom too soon enough, which I'll most likely switch to, as it was the best 1.5 rom out there in my opinion.

I imagine this is gonna be a huge anti-climax for a lot of people who've been complaining (rightly so) for months and months about the lack of 2.1 for GSM Hero. It's like it's the holy grail or something now. Wait 'til you see all the threads complaining about 2.1 being nothing special etc.

The Villain rom guys are getting stuck into the new 2.1 rom. I'll wait for a release from them. Good news all the same.

what all do we need to record? this'll be my first HTC update so im not sure what to expect, but god willing if i do get it how to i give out the "direct link"?

will it take us to a web page in our browser or something such?

When you get an update notification it will start a download in your browser.

Take note of the file name and post it up here and i'll try and get a direct link for you guys.

I wouldn't get too excited. We may not get it for some time.
Currently there is no sign that the Android 2.1 update will be rolling today in any other markets besides Taiwan. But do not despair. Now that it’s rolling out in Taiwan definitely gives us hope that the rest of Europe will be seeing the update within the next few weeks.

Updated to villian rom 6.2. Running great except I can't get MMS to work.
I've tried MMSZAP, changing the script via SDK and also Gscript - none work.
Just wondering has anyone on Meteor got MMS to work on any of the villian roms?

i'm running villain 6.2 and have MMS working. i updated the script for meteor settings and ran it using gscript

for overkill i also manually entered the mms apn settings (wasn't sure if the script was working), it works now so i ain't experimenting anymore with it

ah it was a couple of days ago, the first line of output said the script was verified, second line i can't remember exactly but along the lines of "it's applied" iirc

As in it's just a stock unrooted rom as well as a stock rooted rom.

Be warned that a stock unrooted rom will erase your custom recovery.

I don't know at this stage, gscript just flashes a message for a second saying 'script execution running', that's all that happens. I tried to reboot using gscript and it says not permitted...

that's a big strange alright - sure you're running the script properly?

    - open gscript, hit menu -> add script, then locate the script .sh file (that you should have saved in a folder called "gscript" on the sd card)
    - ensure "needs SU?" is ticked, click save
    - the script should appear in the main list now (i called mine "mmsScript meteor ie")
    - then just click on the script
    - output screen appears displaying what i posted above

Apple only release updates once a year! and they decide if you are entitle to it or not. If you have a jail broken phone you can just **** off as far as they are concerned...

At least with android you can chose to root your phone and use whatever operating system you want.

Enjoy your new iphone. BTW,HTC aren't the only people who make Android phones - you could just by a different brand with a stock UI that can be updated in line with google... But it sounds like you just want to throw your toys out of the pram.

Can I ask why you bought the phone if you were unhappy with the firmware? I have a Hero for 8 months on stock 1.5 and it works great. It'll be great to get 2.1 & I am looking forward to it. But when I bought the phone there were no promises of extra features...

I say fair play to HTC for retrospectively developing for phones that they have no revenue from. It shows dedication and care for their customers.

    Great update, very fast ROM.

Only problem is that I updated to the latest Radio and now the 3g won't work on Meteor at all. I'm fairly sure the APN settings (got them from p133 of the android/hero discussion on this forum) are right unless they've changed.

Although I suppose that's one solution to Meteor disconnection problem!

Anyone know anything about which version of the Radio will actually work for the hero on Meteor? Or is it a problem with the ROM itself?
