Mods - I hope you don't mind me dropping this in here.

    Thanks

    T

My 12 year old son is starting rowing and I understand the Concept 2 is the best available. I might even give it a go myself. However, I don't want to be stuck with a 1,000 euro piece of equipment if he doesn't stick with it!

Anyone out there got one looking for a good home for reasonable money???

Alternatively, have you a good quality rower that can take a bit of punishment??? If so, let me know. All reasonable suggestions will be considered. Cash waiting - am prepared to travel to collect

    Thanking you in advance.

AFAIK these are the most sought after rowers around.

I have a concept II that I bought used in 2001 in the States. I brought it back with me, and other than changing the AA batteries in the LCD unit and a drop of oil it has needed no maintenance.

If you get one, it will hold its value, and you shouldn't have much trouble finding a buyer.

They are basically the top end rowers (before you start getting into the water based rowers), and might be a bit much for a 12 year old.

    Hi

Does the club where your son is rowing not have an erg he can use?

It'd be pretty unusual for a rower of his age (or any rower really) to have their own erg at home. in fact, I wouldn't have thought that 12 year-olds would really do much erging at all?

There are a few companies out there that recondition hotel ones. You might pick one up for about €500.

On the plus side if you do end up spending €1000, you'll have no problem recouping a lot of your money as the resale value is high.

Try Total Gym in Beaumont (no number sorry) who recondition and maintain kit, MCSport who sell reconditioned gear too. www.mcsport.ie

Thanks guys for all the very prompt and valuable info. The young guy will soon be 13 and is almost 6' tall. He was rowing a couple of seasons ago, but lost interest. He will be moving up to a higher grade, so a bit of extra training will help him.

I too need the exercise, hence if we both could use it it would help motivate each other.

I will try those places you suggested Barry.

    Again, many thanks.

    Good stuff.

if you do get one and get interested yourself, there are a couple of different Concept2 forums (a .com and a .co.uk i think) which might be a good source of training and technique advice for you as you get started.

    Hi Twiggy

There is also a "Market Place" forum on http://www.concept 2.co.uk where folks look for and offer secondhand concept2 rowers.

Most sellers are located in the UK but some are in NI. So if you had transport you might be able to collect.

This way you can inspect before you buy and also a lot of the second hand rowers are advertised as being in fairly good condition with lowish milage.

You need to register to post on the forums, but this is mostly to stop spam and messing.

Also as said previously, there is a wealth of useful training guides etc on that site.

    Best Regards,

    M

If you're not in a hurry they pop up on adverts.ie every so often. Never seen one going for less than 500 bills.

+ 1 Provided they are properly maintained. Been on a few in hotels around the place and those than have been neglected are terrible, uneven tension through the stroke and are extremely rough + the display might not be presenting exactly your split or stroke rate.

Ebay has a few, I would tend to buy off and individual or a club rather than a an ex hotel one that hasnt been maintained.
