    Hi all,

I'm a novice MMA trainee and have recently being training in America in wrestling and BJJ. To cut to the chase, I'm heading back next week and could be entered into a grappling tournament provided I can gain 8lbs in 5 days. I am 19, 5 9' and 147lbs of lean muscle really and find it hard to gain weight tbh. Any tips would be appreciated lads.

    Thanks,

    Stuffy

drink 8lbs of water before you go for weigh in???

if you have a big increase in salt intake in your diet in the next few days and drink lots and lots of water you will retain plenty of excess fluids.

the only way you can put on 8lbs in 5days is going to be by basically stuffing yourself before the weigh in

eh...eat loads of pasta and drink gallons of water afterwards making it expand in your stomach...should be good for a few pounds

Cheers lads, ya sorry I should have clarified in my op but I can make the weight not a problem with water etc but I was just wondering is there any good weightlifting techniques or that to increase body mass really. I know I'm gonna have to water weight myself a bit but I was wondering would it be possible to gain at least 5 lbs of muscle in 5 days? I wouldn't mind giving away 3 lbs or less but most other participants will be cutting weight so I would prefer to give as little as possible.

    Thanks

Absolutely not, not even if you were using roids.

Just stick to your compound lifts.

What sort of tournament would require a weight gain?

At 147lbs? why would you not just go in the division below?

maybe he wants to get his ass kicked? ;)

going to the division below would be the easy option.

Thanks for the info, knew it was a longshot anyway.

It was an available slot in that division (which is actually 153 lbs I'm told), I would usually be competing at 141 lbs.

Thanks again for the information anyway, much appreciated.

it doesn't require it, he wants to approach the upper limit to avoid giving away too much weight.

I imagine amateur is 153 and pro 155.
If you currently weight 147 you can compete in that division, as it's technically 142-153. Although, most people (more so at pro) get as close to that level to avoid giving an edge.
Will the trainers let you compete if you are giving away a few pounds. Eat a high salt diet for a week, drink water etc, you might get to 150, I'd avoid drinking excess water or over eating on the day as you'll just be sluggish. Treat fight day as any other at 142.

Oh, and very few will be cutting much weight, as I imagine the weigh-in is on the same day at amateur (unless USA is different that here). Cutting weight on fight night is retarded for obvious reasons.

Oh right okay. Any weight gain now would be useless to you and wouldn't have a corresponding gain athletically. You'd be best off just weighing light in the 153lb division. Unless someone is goig to stop you stepping on the mat of you're light then I'd just eat well and keep nicely hydrated.

It's not a fight tournie Mellor it's grappling so it would be same day weigh in.

What?that's exactly what I said. "Nobody will cut as it's same day weigh in"

And FYI grappling makes no difference, MMA at that level is same day weigh in too
