they never made even when producing great music, now they're gone, let's remember some of them

    gene

    shed seven

    the beta band

    revelino

    the hormones

    whipping boy

I wouldn't include the likes of pulp or suede because they were rated and got loads of attention

Yellowcard would be the first one to spring to mind !

And Test Icicles if you're into that sort of music :)

Well neither are indie bands but definately under rated :o

I would also add The Upper Room, but they might be veering more towards guitar pop :o

I laughed out loud when I read Shed Seven. Without a doubt, they epitomised the very reason the word indie today has so many negative connotations. Tuneless, artless chancers riding the crest of whatever musical trend would sweep them up. They made Flowered Up and The Farm seem like the harbingers of a new musical dawn. Shed Seven were Dawn of the Replicants without the Scottish accents.

I always thought Elastica's first album was pretty good.

Whipping Boy were just brilliant, 'Heartworm' is one my favourite irish albums of all time (even though it was released on a major rather than an indie label). 'Submarine' is a great album as well, it has a less commercial and almost shoegaze feel to it. 'Whipping Boy' was a good album but is probably my least favourite of the 3, still it was a pity that it wasn't more successful.

Agree with Gene and Whipping Boy.. would also throw Babybird into the mix, but it depends on what 'made it' means

Loved them when I was younger. A few years ago you couldn't buy Horsedrawn Wishes new - I had to get another copy of it 2nd hand from San Francisco. I met Steve Murray, the guitar player from the band, and he said even he couldn't get copies of it any more.

It must have been re-released or something though cause you can pick it up new off Amazon now. Speed to My Side off that album was brilliant and I always loved Miss Leader off their first one too.

    The Chalets.
I thought they were great for the time they were around. The girls and the guys paired off in seperate directions Talulah does the Hula and Warlords of Pez respectively.

    Woodstar
From Limerick, signed to Parlophone in the early noughties and tipped for greatness...never happened for them.

    Turn
One of my favourite Irish bands of the noughties, Ollie Cole took it pretty bad when things failed to happen for them though not through lack of ambition. He's bounced back and his solo stuff is great.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 22,559 ✭✭✭✭AnonoBoy

The Chalets were fun - always made great videos.

Turn were alright, Oliver Cole solo isn't up to much I don't think though.

I was big into the Auteurs in the 90's. Don't think they ever got the recognition or the success they deserved.

    Here's Lenny Valentino by them:

They are playing one gig this summer as far as i know so there is hope for new material

The Beta Band's Three EPs is a work of genius. One of my favourite albums of all time. I wouldn't have heard of them if it wasn't for that scene in High Fidelity.

I'm gonna have to go ahead and disagree with some of those bands too :) Ok they weren't great but they had a few really good songs. They were all "britpop" bands. I remember the mid/early 90's and all these kinda bands were the popular music of the day. If you turned on any radio station this is the kinda music you heard. Beats the crap out of the stuff you hear today. But it is true that record companies were throwing contracts at any band that sounded kinda indie. But some good bands got contracts. These songs make me yearn for hot summers of the past and mtv europe.... i must go look for my Shine compilation albums now :)

New Fast Automatic Daffodils. I remember paying a fiver to see these guys play one of the best live gigs I've had the pleasure to attend.

I used to like Marcy Playground. Anyone else remember them? They had one great album 'Sex and Candy.' According to wiki they're still around, but not doing anything of merit.

Also liked A-House, they didn't last long either.

Last i heard they were well and truly broken up. The girls have a new band and some of the guys are doing their own thing. Two of them are in Pez but Pez are Pez and no one really knows when they'll be back or for how long.

I do hope they play a gig or two, decent people and nice pop summery tunes.

Theme was the first and prob best tune.

I also miss turn alot. Made me sit up and listen which takes alot more now than it once did. Find memories of Beretta and Beewax in Cuba in Galway... and the old turn message board. Good good times.

I was thinking about them actually. Also James. They're mostly known for Sit Down, which is a pretty weak song IMO. They have far better numbers...

Inspiral Carpets - they got a lot of stick because they weren't the Roses or the Mondays, but they were a great singles band on their own terms:

    .

Yea i think you're right. I was going by their website but i don't think it's been updated in over a year. Agree with you on The Theme being their best song.. but the first version i didn't like the album version.. it was too clean.. the first version was dirty and it suited the song.

The website is definitely out of date. If there are Chal's gigs i'll post it up here but as it stands it's a 'not a chance!'

Yeah funny though in the early 90s I would have considered James - and others mentioned here - Inspiral Carpets and even RIDE to a certain extent as being rated very highly by many. RIDE were class I must say. Another cheap top notch gig was RIDE in McGonagles on the day they released their debut album.

I picked it up off ebay myself a few years back. pretty good album...

The longpigs album is a great album. I picked up a "best of" of the Inspiral Carpets recently. pretty good too...

Well they knocked out 5 studio albums, and a BBC live record - so whilst they didn't reach the expected highs (whatever about a couple of UK chart placing) I think they left behind enough of a legacy not to be considered failures, however, as the thread says, they were underatted.. criminally so. To quote NME 'The best Irish band ever, including U2'

Dave Couse (the front man) has an album out now on 1969 records and boy oh boy, it's a revelation...

    Anyway, on topic

    The Field Mice
    Seafood
Pony Club (Altho they're techinically still intact)
    Babybird
    Revelino
    Sunbear
    National Prayer Breakfast
    Chicks
    Sack

Revelino were great, they wrote some brilliant songs in their time - Happiness is Mine is still, in my opinion, one of the great Irish songs ever.

Liked NPB a lot although I only got to see them once.

Chicks - never got into them, saw them support Sonic Youth in the late 90's, not a good gig for them. One of them is in The Radio with Stevie M from Rollerskate Skinny now I think.

Sack - another great band that I would never have known about if it wasn't for No Disco. Morrissey loved them and their song Laughter Lines was featured on the Carrie 2 soundtrack for some reason:

A few others worth a mention from the No Disco days (yes some of these are are still together AFAIK).
Compulsion, Lir, That Petrol Emotion, Kerbdog.
