    1. Is road running with a decent pair of runners ok or is it bad on your knees and other body parts etc. I started doin do 5 mile runs in between full body weights days as an alternate to HIIT on the treadmill. First few times left me very sore all over but past that now and seem fine.

    2. Is 44 mins for a 5 mile runs too slow, road is well hilly. Mainly looking to improve general fitness and will complement these runs with HIIT workouts.

What type of pain is it? It could be that you're not used to running long distances and you could have DOMS. I started to get pains in my knees just from running but could run through it. I've stop running now to give them a rest for a week and they feel fine today. Make sure you give you legs a good stretch before running, I think thats what my problem was.

Slow compared to who? I wouldn't worry as long as you can improve your own time each week.

Mixture of doms and joint pain in knees and ankles, just little twinges, not something I could actually call pain really, seems to be fading and getting better as the training progresses.

I dont stretch before run cause I always thought you dont need to before long slow runs and that you shouldnt stretch cold.

If it seems to be fading thats a good sign, it looks like your legs where just not used to it but if the pains don't go then stop running for a week and see how they are a week later.

I've swapped my running for rowing which has been fun, tyring to beat my 2000 meters time is addictive and a killer!

I've heard that as well, it doesn't seem to affect my cat you should see the stretching he does in the morning and he's very flexiable! ;)

running on footpaths can be bad for yout joints, If you can run on Tarmac it is better, dirt tracks are better again. Your weight makes it worse again, if your carrying extra pounds then that is banging down on your joints.

Though the other option is the treadmill and that is tough after a few miles.

44 mins for 5 miles is a good pace. it's about 9 minute miles.

As far as I can make out stretching when you cold isn't much good. A slow warm up followed by a stretch if needed seams to be what the conventioinal wisdom is saying.
Dynamic stretching is reccomended for warm ups over static stretching
