Is Hollywood Sexist?

Had an interesting and HEATED discussion with the Mrs about this issue earlier.

She read an article somewhere about Kate Winslet and Leonardo Di Caprio. Comparing where they were at the time of the Titanic, and how much they were paid. Pointing out that TODAY she has a lot more Oscar Nominations/Wins than he does. They are the same ageish, yet he's paid 20+ Mill a movie and she makes less than half that.

Was also an item on Sky News earlier about how actresses over 30 feel pressured to have cosmetic surgery and "enhancements."

What do you guys think, is Hollywood sexist?

Actually Hollywood are discouraging 'enhancements' and a lot of directors won't even think about casting an actress if he/she thinks she's had work done.

There is nothing sexist about that. He gets paid more because he is worth more at the box office.

Just because people prefer to go watch male actors does not make Hollywood sexist.

DiCaprio draws more of a crowd than Winslet does. Simple.

In general men get paid more than women & women over 30 feel a lot more pressure than men to look "younger".

Hollywood, being what it is, is a blown up microcosm of this reality.

He gets bums on seats than she does, not a bit sexist.

I wouldn't be a bit surprised though if they did bring in some stupid law that says a leading man cannot be paid more than a leading lady.

Look at the nonsense that happened at Wimbledon and now women have equal prize money

    There's wisdom right here.

That said, it's nonsense to say that Hollywood in any way "discourages" cosmetic surgery.

Welcome to supply and demand. Di Caprio can command that figure because people will watch a movie just because he is in it. I can't think of too many memorable movies with Kate Winslet in it, Oscars or not.

To be fair many actors get cosmetic surgery I mean look at Patrick Dempsey.

I don't see how acting pressurises people to get cosmetic surgery, there would be a lot of parts to be filled if everyone had cosmetic surgery.

It's not nonsense. Things are changing. Obviously LA as a whole is still plastic land,USA but I'm talking about castings in films. A lot of directors won't touch girls who've had cosmetic surgery done.

the reality, OP, is that in terms of aging the world is sexist. A 35 year old man is at peak ( unless he was a teen idol in which case he is past peak), and a 35 year old woman is past peak.

Some women here will deny this but women themselves have voted for Sean Connery ( > 70 now), Brad Pitt ( > 40), George Clooney ( > 40), Johnny Depp (> 40), Hugh Jackman ( 40), Colin firth and many others as sexiest man of the year.

That said I think that Terri Hatcher is a hottie, and no work done.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81,220 ✭✭✭✭biko

On a case by case basis it's down to money and what the casters/directors will work for the US audience.
However on a grander scale Hollywood is very stereotyping - women are almost always damsels in distress, token black guys, Arabs being terrorists and so on.
I think in later years this is started to soften up a bit and hopefully will be a thing of the past before long.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,547 ✭✭✭Agricola

Yep, simple case of Di Caprio (and "leading men" in general) being a bigger box office draw than any female actor. He puts more bums on seats, he gets a bigger share of the profit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 843 ✭✭✭eoinbn

A lot of her roles are in small budget, independent films so it's hardly surprising that she doesn't earn as much. However for a woman to get a decent lead role it does seem that they have to move outside hollywood and go down the route that she has.

Men can demand more because the male star is a bigger audience attraction than the female star. Why? Because women are more influenced by who is in the film rather than what the film is about.

Can you confirm this? I've been fap-holding for several years due to doubts about her authenticity.

No, as DiCaprio has been mentioned, i'll use one of his movies as an example. Would you go to see Shutter Island if the likes of Ben Stiller, Nic Cage or Marlon Waynes was the lead actor?

If Scorcese was directing it, I would give it a shot (Scorcese's last chance though, as far as I'm concerned).

I dont think it depends on whether or not just women are more interested in the cast list. I think men and women in general first of all see the name over the film title, and for many that decides whether they go to the cinema or not. And for men and women, male actors are more of a draw.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81,220 ✭✭✭✭biko

I'll see a film based purely on Morgan Freeman being in it.
Or if the film is Sci-fi.
Deep impact - best of both :)

Works both ways tho. Women get the same prize-money as men for the Wimbledon tennis even tho they aren't as good and don't have to put in as much time on the courts per match.

Taking DiCaprio and Winslet as examples, say DiCaprio makes more per movie, but look how much more press attention Winslet gets at award ceremonies, red carpet fashion parades etc etc. The leading men in Hollywood are barely ever featured in tabloids the same way women are, because women like to look at actresses for what they're wearing rather than the movie they're promoting. That may be a generalisation but I work in an office full of women and any time a new movie comes out the first thing they do is comment on what the leading actress looks like "god shes very dowdy in it isnt she?" "oh she looked fabulous" etc etc.

since titantic, diCaprio has starred in gangs of ny (gross $193m), catch me if you can ($353m), man in iron mask ($182m), the beach ($145m), aviator ($214m), blood diamond ($172m), departed ($290m), shutter island ($295m)

ironically the only movie dicaprio has starred in that did under $100m since titantic was Revolutionary Road with winslet

since titantic only two of winslets movies have grossed $100m+ (the reader with $108m and finding neverland ($116m)

winslet can win all the awards she wants, its leo that puts butts in cinemas seats, he is clearly a much bigger box office draw than she is

I agree to a large extent. I'd say far more women would go and see a film for Leonardo Di Caprio than for Kate Winslet. Same thing goes for Robert Pattinson. My head was wrecked listening to the girls I know talking about going to see his last film despite them not reading any reviews of it and having no clue what it was about. His name over the title was all it took to get them to go.

Sex and the City is one of the few films that I can think of that girls will see in large numbers that is not headlined by a male actor. The box office figures do not lie, male leads bring the money.

And if you factor out Johnny Depp...

I was going to say that I generally liked KW films, but having looked at the list of what she's done, I have to say that's not actually true. I still like her an awful lot though.

Certain actors for certain genres. Would you be as inclined to see it if Di Caprio, Scorsese or anyone of any fame weren't attached to the film? Doubtful. It'd sink under the radar
