    Hi Keezer,

Depends what you are looking for, Galway uni has a new gym which is quite good, Olympic Physique is a decent gym with great equipment , plenty of Free Weights etc.But For power lifting or Oly lifting or body building its gotta be Galway City gym, a lotta good guys and plenty of good advice and help.

Just getting into weights now, but was looking for some place with a good collection of weights and cardio as well as a pool.

Kinda wanna tone up and gain some muscle

I suppose the pool aint that important though, i will check out those places the next time im up.

Which one would be best for someone using public transport

Well if you will be attending NUIG I presume ya will be living in a student accomodation during first year?

Well the Kingfisher(University gym) is located on campus with good equipment and a good selection of free weights. The only thing about the Kingfisher its usually very busy.

The Galway city gym is a bit out from the uni. But depending on where your living ya could be further/closer. But as was already said, it has the best selection of weights.

If a person lives in 'on campus' accommodation in Galway they're as close to GCG as they are Kingfisher. OP sounds like you're just starting out and Kingfisher is the cheapest for students so I'd suggest that. It is busy in the evening like any other gym but pick your times and options and it shouldn't be too hard to train there.

Thanks guys, not goin to Nuig but the GMIT and wont be living on campus as far as i know.

Not really starting out as i have been a member of gym over a year, just only doing weights for the last 5 months.

Was looking at the kingfisher renmore as well.

Anymore info with regards to the one in renmore, The college ie GMIT are offering mebership for €200 in this place as well as well as the college gym. Not a bad price, were exactly in renmore is it, living in rian na luachra so any advice would be good.

If you can join that Kingfisher one, then do. I lived in Galway during the summer of 2009 while working at the Marine Institute. I used different gyms around the area, but the best were Kingfisher and LeisureWorld. LeisureWorld is in Salthill though.

GCG is the Best for Weights etc in the City, If you walk from GMIT head towards the City as shown here, pass by the EYE Cinema and G Hotel, on your right will be the Hunstman Hotel in front of you as you walk will be Traffic Lights, DONT GO LEFT OR RIGHT at The Lights go straight up the hill at the lights, as you go up you will get to a roundabout and in front of you will be a Topaz Filling Station and to your right will be a Cream Painted School.

At the Roundabout go extreme right and you will basically be walking back the way you came except not down hill, on your left will be a cream painted school, keep that on your left, on you right will be a cheap hotel just pass it by and immediately beside it is The Town Park Centre, This is Where Galway City Gym is.

Hope these Images Help and explain what i have just said above.

    Enjoy,

    Dave.

Below here is GMIT as a Yellow Box, Route you Take is a Red Line, EYE Cinema/G Hotel is the Green Box, GCG is the Red Box.

I have kinda gone into detail here for the Hill/Roundabout, GCG/Town Park Centre is Circled Red. You can see the cream school at the top left of the Pic and the bottom right has the traffic lights at the G Hotel/EYE Cinema.

Does that membership include the gmit gym? If so, have you trained in there? What kind of a program are you doing at the moment? Compound lifts?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 301 ✭✭keezer

Ya it includes the GMIT one but havent been in it yet, mainly do squats, bench press, millitary press etc but wana go bigger

I'll be going in at some stage today. Are you looking for someone to have a look at your form or to possibly show you other lifts like the Deadlift? Not to gone on the whole gym partner thing, I prefer to get in and out in 45-55 mins but I would have no problem meeting to discuss the above.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 301 ✭✭keezer

Thanks for the offer, not to sure will be able to make it today. In order to use it you have to do the induction so that could take a day or 2,so must call into them today and sort that out,i understand you dont wana do the whole training together so thats fine with me. Just not really sure what lifts etc will benift me if you know what i mean and looking to improve.

Are you following any program? All the compound lifts will benefit you when doing them with correct form. If you are looking for someone to give you their opinion on your form then I wouldn't mind meeting you. Don't mean to come across as a prick with the whole training together thing. Like I said if you think you would benefit from someone else critiquing your lifts then I'd be happy to meet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 301 ✭✭keezer

Kinda was following one from my previous gym, it hadnt many compound lifts just a few simple things like few squates bench press etc.... looking at getting another one done either by the college or kingfisher......see what they suggest i should do, No bother about the whole training together, i understand. Might give you a shout when i get into a new routine and you can critique my lifts.

    Cheers man

Anyone know of any decent weight gyms in Castlebar?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 301 ✭✭keezer

Kingfisher, is so so, nice new place but usually busy all the time. Castle lesuire, nice selection of free weights, smith smachine etc never too busy and sound staff. Lough lannagh could be worth a visit too but have never been so dont know.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11 Pat4780

I know ya leonard, its still stupid that its not available to all members, there should be one in the elite room and 2 in the main room.
