Won the boxing tournament "Prizefighter" in London tonight broadcast live on Sky Sports.

Putting Limerick on the map. Good man.

Fair play to him. I saw that bruiser of a semi-final he had & then went channel hopping. Delighted for him.

It is even more of an achievement when one considers the short notice at which he got called up, and the lack of ring experience he had when comapred to the others involved tonight.

    fair play to him,

Fair play to Big Bang last night. He came across great during the event, just as an out and out honest fighter. No bullsh1t with him, he just went there to do a job and did it brilliantly. The Sky commentators couldn't praise him enough.

    I hope not!

Does Willy have a reputation? Seems like a nice chap, if not a little innocent.

We had a thread on here months ago where Willie's character was questioned. I know him through my own involvement with two of the local ABCs, and whilst I won't go into the same detail as in the previous thread on him, I can safely say that he is a good sort who is dedicated to his sport. Boxing has been good for him, and he will be good for the name of Limerick boxing.

And now going for a European title in UL on November 6th. Good luck to the guy, some few months for him.

Saw him on telly this evening. Seems like a really nice fella. Come on Willy, put Limerick on the map!!

Yep Kiko Martinez, the man who put Bernard Dunne on the canvas three times before beating him in under 90 seconds for the European belt, decided he did not fancy fighting Willie, so now Paul Hyland will be fighting Willie for the title, with Kiko looking to fight the winner.

Yet again Willie will be entering the ring against a man who has more than double the amount of rounds in terms of experience, and four years more experience in terms of being a pro and training at pro level.

And despite that, I fancy Willie to bring that European title to Limerick in only his 11th pro fight.

I would urge anyone who wants to roar him on to get tickets for that night, and even those that hate Dublin can get something out of this as Hyland is from Dublin.:D

A fight for the European title and it is against a Dub. Would only be better if a world title was on the line.;)

Fair fúcks to him, he is way ahead of schedule in boxing terms. He's a great story and always entertaining. Can't wait for his fight with Kiko Martinez. That's one fight that will not last 12 rounds.

    Well done Willie.

Does this mean Limeick has 2 boxers that are european champions for their weight? ie big bang and andy lee?!

on another note, just something i noticed with the fight last night is willie threw eveything at the other guy, looked wrecked just before the fight was finished, could barely throw a punch off..maybe something he needs to address against kiko..

Andy has never fought for the European title since turning pro. He fought for the Irish SuperMiddle weight title.

Willie is Limerick's first Pro boxer to become European champion at any weight.

Well done Willie. Great for him and good for Limerick to have 2 local lads who fight a lot in Limerick as well.

I was actually surprised the referee stopped it when he did, as he had given Hyland no warning (that I saw at least) and I'm not sure that Hyland was really hurt either.

That said, when a boxer is just standing there taking shots (even if mainly on the arms and gloves) without any reply whatsoever, a referee may feel he has no choice. I got the impression Hyland panicked and froze.

Don't know much about Martinez but Casey was countered well a few times last night, and will need to be tighter against better fighters.

A fighter has to either move or fire back, Hyland took about 20 unanswered shots and couldnt handle the pressure to it was right stoppage in my opinion.

Here is a report for the fight.

id never have nothing good to say about any of that family. people have very short memories in this town.

This thread has nothing to do with his family history. It's about congratulating a local sportsman on his recent outstanding achievement. You might not be a fan of his, but have some respect for the posters who do want to discuss positive news.

What a fighter, will there be a civic reception (not a pun)? The guy has to be in some shape as he was interviewed straight after the fight and wasn't out of breath, cracking jokes, setting up his next fight and ribbing Kiko.

    Massive respect.

Has he not already won it?????

Serious fighter, fair play to him.

Isn't it better have a proper Limerick man (as in real hardcore limerick accent, sayings etc) out their doing Limerick proud instead of some Castletroy Faux D4 accent trying to make Limerick sound "glam" and "hip".

He is who he is and makes no bones about it.

Martinez V Casey won't be until early next year. There will be a huge announcement when the date is confirmed, it would be difficult to miss the announcement, keep an eye out on rte.ie or any newspaper......or just keep checking this forum because I'm sure one of us will be talking about it :)

His next fight is against Guillermo Rigondeaux on March 19 in citywest for the world title.

I think he is vacating the european title for his world shot at Rigondeaux

It's for the Interim WBA world title and not the actual WBA world title. Basically the winner will get the chance to fight the actual world champion at some point. Well in theory that is how it is meant to work.

Boxing has become riddled with belts over the last few decades.

But that is no knock on Willie as he has a very very good opponent in Rigondeaux and he will be starting the fight as the underdog.

It's the same belt Bernard Dunne won, I know its an interim belt, but as far as casual boxing fans are concerned, it will be considered the real deal.

As I said it is no knock against Willie. He is where he is on merit as far as I am concerned. He could easily have avoided this fight, but he has the guts and confidence to have a crack, and I really hope that he surprises a lot of people.

I don't think so. I think Dunne was the actual WBA champion, as opposed to the interim champion.

He didn't it was an interim belt, Celestino Caballero was and Dunne avoided from fighting him prior to accepting the Cordoba fight.

Casey is fighting arguably the greatest amateur boxer ever and Rigondeaux has already beaten a class act in Cordoba after 7 pro fights, but not in great fashion.

Hopefully Casey can put the pressure on for a sustained amount of time and hopefully Rig will wilt, but he could get countered all night long if he tires early.
