Might as well do this now before someone creates a pale imitation before me:

    crest.jpg vs. cork_crest.jpg

    Date: 6.6.10

    Time: ???

    Venue:

    908564105_5e9f084b47.jpg

    Fitzgerald Stadium Killarney.

    Referee: Padraig Hughes.

    Possible Cork Team:

    A. Quirke

    R. Carey
    D. Kavanagh
    E. Cotter/E. Cadogan

    N. O'Leary
    M. Shields
    P. Kissane

    P. O'Neill/A. Walsh
    A. O'Connor

    C. Sheehan/F. Goold
    D. O'Connor
    P. Kelly

    D. Goulding
    C. O'Neill
    P. Kerrigan

Injuries: G. Canty (doubtful), N. Murphy (doubtful), A. Lynch (doubtful).

    Star Player: Daniel Goulding.

    1224254554578_1.jpg

Ones To Watch: Ciaran Sheehan & Aidan Walsh.

Cork's Best Chance Of Victory: Running the Kerry midfield to the ground and ensuring breaking ball from Kerry kick-outs; constant harassing of the Kerry middle third. D O'Connor's free-taking has to be peerless.

    Almost Definite Kerry Team:

    B. Kealy

    M O'Se
    T. Griffin
    T. O'Sullivan

    T. O'Se
    M. MacCarthy
    K. Young

    S. Scanlon
    M. Quirke

    P. Galvin
    D. O'Sullivan
    D. Walsh

    C. Cooper
    K. Donaghy
    B. Sheehan

    Injuries: None

    Star Player: Mike Mac...

    0002a3ca189r.jpg

    One To Watch: Donnacha Walsh.

Kerry's Best Chance Of Winning: Deep and direct ball into Donaghy and Cooper; drawing as many frees in the Cork half as possible from a fussy referee.

Prediction: Kerry by 2-3 points, the respective free-takers making the difference.

Orizio you're starting this one early, Mike Mc is certainly not our star player having played none of the league and literally being dropped in for the Tipp game. The fact he played well does not make him out star player. Gooch or Donaghy would be our top two players.

I'd also expect Quirke to be an impact sub for this one and Moran coming in as Cork are much more agile in the middle of the field.

Home field advantage might swing it Kerry's way. To be honest I do fancy a narrow Kerry win. I think the back door might do Cork better this year.

I like the dig about a fussy ref. Kerry pick up a lot of frees because they only way to stop Gooch or Donaghy from destroying you is to foul them.

Sheehan's place kicking might be the difference in this game.

Tough to say for sure but it is on a bank holiday weekend and there are 3 concerts on in the INEC Friday, Saturday & Sunday night so there should be big crowds around town. A fair bit could depend on the whether it's a fine day.

Start time for the Senior match is 16:00. I'm assuming the junior game is at 14:30 but not 100% on that.

Would be surprised if Quirke doesnt start midfield. Head and heart would lead me to back Kerry as I'd imagine that the Kerry team would be very keen to avoid the qualifiers this year.

Really? I've never heard of them.

More then anyone else, if Mike MacCarthy does not have a good game, then Kerry do not win. Some of your forwards can afford to have off-days - not your center back and most experienced player. Hence why he is the star player in my eyes.

Once again he has no winter training done and one game under his belt.

He is a great player but the team has never revolved around him, or anyone else for that matter.

Kerry are a balanced unit as any of the top teams are. If Mike Mc plays crap he comes off. We've won games without him. Heck he had to come out of retirement last year.

Who would Kerry miss the most if they were taken out of the team? Gooch or Donaghy hands down. If we were missing both we wouldn't have a hope against Cork.

    Well put together Orizio

Hoping Quirke doesnt play, wont be mobile enough for a quick Cork Midfield pair.

Great to see Mike Mac playing, is a calm player under pressure.

Should be sold out allright big game.

I think Kerry by 2 points or else Cork by at least 6 points. All depends on if we start well.

    Whos going? I am :)

The defence revolves around the center-back - both Cooper and Donaghy can have off days and the likes of Galvin and O'Sullivan can pick up the slack, but if Mike Mac plays badly then the likes of Pearse O'Neill and Kerrigan are likely to run riot.

I think Cork will travel to Killarney in a reasonably confident mood. I expect Cork to win by 2 points. Both teams are reasonably well matched but the cork bench I believe is stronger and could be a telling factor. Cannot wait for Sunday and I hope the sun is shining in Kerry, getting wet two Sundays in a row would be unfair, but acceptable for 2 wins!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,971 ✭✭✭teednab-el

Cork have a poor record in Killarney. Id say this could be Kerry's by 2-3 points. Hopefully im wrong though.

    Well all
Myself and herself are travelling down to the match and are just planning on picking up 2 tickets for the terrace before the game.
Will that be ok or will it be a sell out?

hard to tell. They are on sale on Pairc uí Rinn tomorrow 6-8pm. I would be surprised if it is a sell out, but there should be a big crowd, especially if the sun is shining!

That's a strong looking Kerry lineup, amazing they can absorb the loss of players like Aidan O'Mahony, Darragh O'Se, Tadgh Kennelly and Tommy Walsh (who is the best young player in the country imo), and yet it seems to make little difference as they still have a seriously good team.

In truth though, aside from the usual bragging rights, does it matter that much who wins this game? Both teams will be knocking around later in the Summer one way or another, and a Munster title wouldn't exactly be any great cause for celebration in either county at this stage. This is one fixture that has certainly been a bit devalued by the qualifiers.

Going through the football qualifiers would be a complete bollocks imo - so yes, it does matter who wins.

Hoping Quirke doesnt play, wont be mobile enough for a quick Cork Midfield pair.

You'll have keane2097 all over you for that - there's always questions raised about Quirkes mobility but imo he is very mobile, he gets around the park alot and links up play well, I agree however with the threat of Corks midfielders running at us and we do need pace there to stop them, I'd expect Quirke to start but if things aren't going well then Maher will come on, not Moran who didn't get playing time against Tipp like Maher did.

Great to see Mike Mac playing, is a calm player under pressure.

Agreed, my dad raised a great question about the way GAA has gone with players being overtrained, having weights instructors, bringing in fitness coaches etc. - it's a tesament that Mike Mac could skip the league campaign and yet slip into the centre back slot seamlessly two weeks ago, he really is a great athlete.

Agreed - Kerry will obviously be hopping for this match as they can't afford to go through the qualifiers again - it's tiresome, alot of travel involved and considering how much mileage this panel has clocked up over the past few years it's paramount to them mounting a challenge for an All-Ireland that they stay rested.

I'd be alot more confident of Cork making it through the qualifiers easily as they have a younger panel and, going by last year - their fitness levels are phenomenal!

All in all - it's going to be a great game, The Park is in superb condition, hopefully it'll be a royal clash of two very good teams....with Kerry winning :)

Lol at the idea of playing David Moran instead of Micheál Quirke due to mobility.

I really wonder how many times people have seen the players they are talking about actually play sometimes.

A Cork v Kerry match is always a big occasion in the GAA calendar but with the back door qualifier route available for the loser i don't think too many of the fans will be too bothered Sunday evening if their favourite team loses. I reckon Kerry will win this by a few points.

It'd definately be a cause for concern amongst Kerry fans imo due to the tiring nature of going through the qualifiers on any team. I'd be worried about Kerrys challenge if they were to go through this route again what with all the miles they've clocked up over the past number of years.

    Agreed.

Kerry's performance against Tipp was such that I think we can give serious credit to Cork in the event that they win on Sunday.

Yeah they looked like they actually had gas in the tank against Tipp in comparison to last year when the entire panel looked out of shape - I was suprised Cork didn't absolutely hammer us out the gate last year tbh we were so poor in every dept.

It'll be interesting to see if Tom Sull starts the next day thinking about it, he was poor against Tipp and Corks corner forwards can be potent when they get going - I'd imagine he'll start alright but Reidy mustn't be far off I'd imagine

Tom will be dreaming of taking on Cork in Killarney on Sunday. There's no better man to have on the field against them. Think of the slating he's gotten since the Tipp match. "Too old..."past it"..."taken off against Tipp". The Rathmore man won't let us down. Wouldn't be surprised if he was MoM on Sunday.

    what the cork injury update?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 345 ✭✭Pappy o' daniel

Who will mark Donaghy? Cadogan is on a roll, but I'd put him on Gooch, Derek Kavanagh for Donaghy?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,460 ✭✭✭Orizio

Carey will be on Cooper - after that I would guess Kavanagh of Donaghy and Cadogan on Sheehan, although this will be harsh on young Cotter.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,789 ✭✭✭✭keane2097

WOuld Cadogan not be a bit wasted on Sheehan?

Graham Canty is doubtful with that shoulder injury he has.

Anthony Lynch and Nicolas Murphy are definitely out.

Unlike Kerrys fake injury worries , Cork have genuine one's. No Murphy, no Lynch, no Canty, no Miskella. The backbone of last years team.
Corks midfield and defence are green as grass and as we saw last sunday you cant beat experience.
Kerry at evens is a steal IMO.

Did not know that, taught they be odds on 4/6 or 4/7 or so. Thats great odds going bookies later for that.

Cork have not won there since 1995 I remember the day well enough it was packed to rafters that day Kerry got goal within opening minute but Cork were better side overall and won by few.

Are those players definite absentees? If so the even money on Kerry is serious value.

Interesting looking team. Harsh on Cotter being dropped, big risk starting Canty considering he has played little to no football since last year.
