    It's not Eircoms fault ffs.

Blame the music companies and their court cases.

When something is cheap there is usually a reason for it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 115 ✭✭brendor

Why? Because they won't let you download copyrighted content? Grow up.

On the Facebook group it says:
EIRCOM WILL from today begin a process that will lead to cutting off the broadband service of customers found to be repeatedly sharing music online illegally.
Ireland is the first country in the world where a system is being put in place. Under the pilot scheme, Eircom customers who illegally share copyrighted music will get three warnings before having their broadband service cut off for a year.

I say meh. If you have already got 2 warnings from them it is your own fault.

They now have a 3 strike rule that if you download files they don't like they can and will shut you off, they don't need evidence, they can just do it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,070 ✭✭✭✭My name is URL

I'm too apathetic to switch provider.. just have to wait until they disconnect me

If UPC was available here I'd switch in an instant but the only others I can go to are Eircom resellers

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,818 ✭✭✭Minstrel27

    I never had Eircom broadband.

This thread has been done, but basically it means download even legal torrents, and only legal torrents, and you will be shut down. They won't be checking to see if the torrents are for free and without copyright.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,018 ✭✭✭Mike 1972

Would disconnecting people without refund constitute breach of contract ?
you download files they don't like they can and will shut you off, they don't need evidence, they can just do it.

Wouldnt they want to do something about the secruity problems on their customers wireless routers first ?

EIRCON has dug it's own grave. it just show's you how stupid the austrailian business people in particular are, allowing this. sure EIRCON is rusting a good bit, it's only a matter of time before it goes under. :pac:

The point is that they're not proving you're downloading illegal/copyrighted content before issuing warnings. They are presuming you're guilty without verifying your guilt or providing any evidence, and then penalising you (and anyone you happen to share a connection with) based on presumed guilt.

Why are people boycotting now considering this was announced last year(?)...
Im boycotting them because they ****ed me around long enough with their non-service and "customer support".

For better or worse, vodafone here I come, please dont be vodafail.

Im with Eircom and find their broadband a good service so far.

I find it hard to believe that Eircom will, along with countless others, cut me off. If they do, then fairwell Eircom, first thing I will do it cancel the direct debit with the bank, and get a different service provider asap. I find it hard to believe that Eircom are willing to risk loosing thousands of customers over this - surely this makes no sense as a commercial business???

Really? I've found the customer service from Eircom to be better than many other companies. Just recently, I had my line cut off because of an issue with my direct debit. I got a final demand from them and assumed it was just a bill so put it aside (I check my billing online)

Called them up and within an hour I was reconnected without having to pay the fee.

On other occasions I've been on to them for service inquiries and have always found them to be very accommodating.. maybe I'm just lucky though =/

+1 = Found their customer service to be pretty good tbh from any dealings I have had with them

Eircom's always been sh1t, even when they had no competition. When I was with them, they only had dial-up, the good old days when it took 3 months to download an MP3.

    A CD-R or a DVD-R loaded to capacity with MP3's doesn't have an IP address ;)

About the only thing the RIAA and their ilk can do to combat the above is push for a blank media tax as implemented in Canada.

There is a cycle they always follow when issues arise with the broadband service. While it may work under most circumstances, of course it can't fix everything, namely the problem I encountered. I went through this cycle four times (four seperate engineers coming down)

Either of you guys have yeer broadband cut off for a week without being given any information as to why? Any bad experience with connection/sync at all?

No cant say have any probs with them, havent had broadband cut off at all. Only with them about 7 months, and maybe have gotten lucky that havent had any major probs for them to deal with

The only problem I've ever had with my connection was when their DNS was hacked.. it was slow for a few days then. I live right accross the road from the exchange though so maybe that has something to do with it.

i had an idea, do ye reckon this would work?

Im in contract with ericom, wanted to change recently, but costs a fortune to buy out, so didnt bother. if i was to blatantly download stuff, then get them to cut me off, would that get me out of the contract without paying the release fee?

And its shíte. (trust me) I had an 8 meg line of which I can only ever get a max download of 2 meg, customer support is a joke too.

What if UPC lose their Court case next month for the same thing?
    Will the rest follow?

Its clearly not in Eircom's interest to enforce this.

Does anyone know if they'll be forced to cut off people, or is it at their discretion who, and how many offenders get the cut?

This is unknown IIRC. I'd say it (numbers/results) was set in the out of court settlement that all this is based around.

It's different in the situation of a court case as Irma are looking for secondary liability on the part of the ISP for failure to implement filtering software on their network. They can just go looking for a settlement like Eircom. It's hard to see UPC losing the case on the basis of having some liability as a service provider.

Every few weeks theres a boycott eircom campaign.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 515 ✭✭✭daithimac

will this only be effecting people using p2p or will people using server sites be hit by this as well, It will be interesting to see how this goes. Between this and UPC rolling out uncapped 100 MB service by the end of the year things can't be looking to good at eircom towers

Eircom is the sorriest excuse for a telecommunications and internet company history has yet to "devolutionise" us with.

Ireland is now up their with the leading broadband systems of the world and holds it's head high among such role models as Congo, Bolivia and indeed, the Amazon rainforest.

SKY won't even set up shop here because the proper structure is far from being in place. Why people accept to pay nearly three times the amount of money for a slower connection is absolutely beyond me. But then again, the new lazy Irish generation just sit on their asses and let things happen instead of saying "no, I ain't getting my ass owned each and every month". God damn criminals. That's all they ever were.
