im thinking of changing my recording software,im not really happy with pro tools and its just getting harder for what i want to do!i have been looking at videos on you tube of logic and it seems easier to do a few more things!! a few people reading this might know me from my previous threads before about having problems with pro tools and it working with my operating system etc . . .is it sensible for me to change to logic?? im just really confused with pro tools, it really is a great recording soft ware but at times its just to much and im having problems with it being conpatable with ny mac

and another question . . .does logic require a big spec computer for it ro run and does it need fire wire for the files to run like pro tools??

if you can help me i would appreciate it :)

Logic requires an decent Mac and thats about it. You are advised to record you projects to an external firewire drive. Logic uses less resources than PT, it comes with a much higher track count and it rarely ever crashes. The plugins are great and the midi functionality is really cool too.

Logic does crash - Not much - But it definitely can. Nobody is perfect! :(

I had the very 1st project I opened / made in Logic 9 to mess around - crash with a only couple of electric piano's, an Ultrabeat and a ES1.

Nothing since then though. Almost as if it was trying to show me who was the Boss! LOL

L8 crashed a little - but nothing that I hadnt saved. I think its some of the 3rd party stuff that F***'s it up for me. My Mac doesnt like PSP Nitro.

and seems like i heard alot that pro tools crashes alot to and pro tools takes alot more like the specs of the mac mac and accessories etc(firewire and audio interfaces etc)??from the videos logic seems easier to do things than pro tools

are there things i need to know before thinking of buying ?? like what spec i need ((mac) firewire drive and all those details etc

    Hi Ava.

I use Logic Express 8. The main difference between Express and the Pro version is the Pro version comes with a few more bells and whistles i.e. more loops, instruments and effects plug ins and also has the mainstage bit (Ive no idea what this does). It's exactly the same other than this. If you're just starting off or are at an intermediate level I would suggest Express.

I make dance music and am finding Logic a dream. I started with Reason which was a great program for making sounds but fell down a bit when making whole songs (loads of scrolling down the rack and getting confused with routing of wires and also visibility of ports etc). Logic is very easy to use. I've mainly taught myself by watching Youtube but I also bought the following book which is very helpful

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Apple-Pro-Training-Producing-Professional/dp/0321502922/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1275388619&sr=8-3

I cannot recommend Logic enough. And the Express version is suitable for most amateurs.

Logic is made for Mac only so it will work on any mac, no matter the specs. However as with any cpu hungry program, the better the specs the better the performance. I've an Imac 3.06 ghz dual core, with 3gb of Ram and Logic has not crashed once.

Sorry didnt know this post is still alive :) did I mention make the move :) Logic all the way............

If your unsure look at protools 7 and then look at protools 8 and then think who wants to be like who ;)

can of worms officially opened (cuts the red tape)

    All the best.

It's ridiculous how Thomann can sell Express 9 for €155 while Apple (the makers) sell it for €199.

I dont know enough about ultrabeat to answer you 100%, but I'll try.

What type of external software you talking about

If it's a plug in I suspect you will be able to program the drums in the plug in then just copy it to the arrange window in Logic. No point in running it through Ultrabeat is there?

If it's not and is an independent pice of software then you would have to export from the other software as a wav file then import that wav into Ultrabeat to be adjusted and arranged. You would have to do this for each drum sound.

    Hope this helps.

to be honest i dont really know what drum software to get i just want to be able to make electronic beats and reasons why i want to get a separate software is because then ill have more of a range of electronic sounds etc ?

i didnt get you when you said if its a independent piece of software is it most likely that most softwares would be plugins?

Ok it sounds like Ultrabeat wiull be fine for you. It comes with loads of sample drumkits. You can then buy or download additional kits or individual drum sounds which can be imported into Ultrabeat. You can then adjust them if needed in Ultrabeat.

I think most music making software is either full DAW's like Logic, Cubase, Ableton etc or else plug ins for these.

to be honest youll soon move away from ultrabeat and either use another drum machine plug in or put one shot samples into there own channels in the arrangement(this is the most common practice)

you can also load samples into banks in esx sampler.

audio shots are the most common.just slap them directly on an audio channel

Not a fan of Ultrabeat. There are so many good alternatives out there for very little money.

    automatic delay compensation.

most daws automatically compensate for plugin latency. PTLE doesn't.

Yeah.. But you have to pay postage on that dont ya? Anything over 200 is free afaik.

Keep an eye on Adverts.ie.. Music Section.

Logic Studio usually comes up every now & then for about 200 ish - so you'd be better off buying it 2nd hand. Thats how I got mine.

PMI even had one going for 99 - but that was definitely a one off, certainly not the usual

Hold out for a while, keep your eyes peeled & you'll pick up L8 for a steal. If you are just exploring @ this stage Logic Studio 8 would be more than enough.

True. Was dying for ages to get my monitors but hadn't got funds to splash out. So I held out, watched adverts every day and eventually got a set of KRK6's for €270.

    Bargain!!
