    Hi all,

Can anyone recommend soya noodles... trying to low carb for a few weeks... just wondering if they're any better than normal noodles?

Are there any other low carb substitutes that you know of/use?

    Thanks a million

if your on a low carb diet your carbs should probably come from veg and root veg and low gi fruit and some whole grains. I would drop the noodles if your on a diet tbh

There's shirutaki noodles which have been consumed for centuries in Japan.

They are made from yams and are almost all fibre. Good for low cal dieters too.

They are packed in this water that smells strongly of fish, don't let that put you off, just rinse them in a colander and they taste rather bland, they're not exactly like noodles made from rice/wheat but the texture is there and they pick up the flavour of whatever is in your sauce.

I wouldn't touch soy flour with a bargepole but that's for health rather than weightloss reasons.

Sorry for going off-topic but why don't you eat soy flour? I thought it was healthy.

And where would you get shirutaki noodles? I was on a low carb for a while but fell off the wagon but am planning to go back on it. Felt so much healthier and had more energy on it!

There's a lot of debate around soy. My big issue with it is that it has been shown to suppress certain thyroid hormones and it also mimics estrogen in both males and females. No traditional culture consumes a lot of it and then they always consume it with some seaweed or fish as the iodine in them balances the thyroid suppressing effects. It's mostly used in small amounts or as a condiment in Asian cooking so things like miso soup and soy sauce and small amounts of fermented tofu are fine.

Re: The noodles, got 'em online, don't get your hopes too high, they are not as good as the real thing, kinda like how cauli-rice is to rice.

I will just say that there was a scare a while about about how half a portion of soy a day would reduce testosterone levels to the point where guys almost turn into girls.

This was based on a study in New York, and shows what happens when you use bad techniques. It seems one of the men entering the study had sky high testosterone (almost certainly coming off an AS cycle) and during the course of the study, his T levels dropped to normal. But the difference between his starting and finishing levels were so high that it skewed the whole study, and for some reason, he wasn't excluded. No-one else on the study had any significant changes in T levels.
