For those of you that use it, today's update for Dessid renders the app useless as it can no longer scan for your lost password. However if you did update just delete the updated app, sync iPhone with iTunes and the old app will be in your app folder, just drag it on to the screen icon, sync and you'll have the old one again.

What does it do now, if it can't scan for passwords?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,176 ✭✭✭vinnycoyne

The developer had to remove the feature which scans for wireless networks (because it was using a private API to do so). You now have to type in the network name (SSID) that you want to connect to and it will give you the code.

So the advice is don't update? I think it's the best app ever, don't want to mess with it.

I just update this app using itunes on my pc so the version of dessid in my itunes is the updated (i.e. sh1t) version. Is there a way to get back the old version? If I do a restore of my iPhone to an an older image does it use the old versions of my apps?

Delete the version on itunes , connect your iPhone and select the device. Right click and transfer purchases to itunes.

But above where you enter in the network name or whatever, it says Scan. I scanned and found two earlier. I thought the update was just the layout.

Although I think the two I found were ones I had scanned before but wasn't able to connect to

why cant you just remember the 8 digits that the wifi on the phone will find?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,487 ✭✭✭banquo

This might actually be useful for me, because eircom lines around here have taken out the space between the 4 digit groups.

Just updated. Old features work fine, as do new ones. Kudos to the OP though.

Maybe I'm just being a noob, But I don't see a 'Scan' button above Enter Network Name???

    Me neither...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,720 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Sorry, I was working from memory. It is right beside 'Enter Network Name', in the top right corner. It is on mine anyway, and mine has the update. In the reviews for the dessid update on iTunes someone else pointed it out too

The Scan button seems to come and go pretty unpredictably, so far as I have been able to see. Opened it a few times, sometimes there, sometimes not.

There seems to be a number of conflicting reviews on the iTunes app store re the Dessid update. The majority of users are saying the update is now useless, however a number of reviewers are saying that a "scan" icon comes on itself when the App picks up useable network and it is displayed in the top right corner. Has anyone here found it works fine with the update?

There's already another thread on this on the front page...

The update works fine on my Iphone 3GS OS 3.1.3
just make sure you or near a network and your Iphone is
not on Airplane mode in settin

if you cant see the scan button try turining on and off the Airplane mode
    see if that helps.

STRANGE stop working after a hour the scan button vanished
    but back old version

I have a question. I'm new to the iPhone so I don't understand why you would need this app? Have you not got unlimited browsing anyway as part of your contract? So why do you need to connect to a wifi if this is the case?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,763 ✭✭✭Jax Teller

Not everyone is on a contract , and 02 and vodafone only give 2gb of data afaik .

3G/Edge coverage is shít in a lot of places.

Also some things dont work on 3g (eg downloading apps bigger than 10mb or something).

I have tried the latest update of the app quite a few times since I saw the OP.

On every occasion the 'scan' button has appeared. No issues for me using it at all.

The scan button doesnt appear unless you have your iphone's wifi on in the first place. It works fine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,487 ✭✭✭banquo

Also: iPod touches don't have 3g.

This however makes it completely useless in terms of the main function the vast majority of people bought it for.

To scan for eircom connections to piggy back off?

Shock horror, you need wifi on to scan for a wifi network!

    Or am i missing something?

I'm pretty sure he's saying you have to already be connected to a wifi network...

Wifi is always on on my phone and I rarely see the Scan button any more.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 166 ✭✭gleesonger

The scan button is only visible when there is an eircom connection in range otherwise its invisible, it is fairly annoying alright.I'm guessing by all the bad reviews a rushed upgrade\downgrade will come through soon.

That exactly it. I'm holding out to do the update, but now I have 4 apps looking for updates so it's a pain..

You know that If you jailbreak your iDevice that you can always downgrade your app, I've done it a few times now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,408 ✭✭✭naasrd

Anyone getting either version of the App to work? I'm using the first version and it's stopped working.

Update: Using this on an iPad in Liffey Valley, just pasted password into a message to see what actual code came up then typed that into etc, etc...

whats the name of that app can anyone tell me? is there a better wifi on cydia?

Dessid. Made by Daniel Heffernan (http://twitter.com/danielshi).

    http://daniel.ie/dessid/

It still works, though the user experience is poor. Make sure Wifi is active on the phone. However, I think it needs more than one Eircom network to be within range for the Scan to appear.

Use it responsibly. Accessing a network without permission is illegal in this country - even if it's not been protected. Look at the trouble Google are in with the German data protection authorities about "open data."

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 975 ✭✭✭uvox

Just pulled the latest update and indeed the Scan button is gone. Apologies. So the app can only be really used for what the developer says is its intended purpose. POS. If you can't remember your password saving yourself the money and call eircom or access their website (another thread on this).

that app was great when it came out first, thankfully i never updated, but as time went on, it became less and less reliable from the original one, so updating didnt seem to be as bad a prospect as when the app was working good.

once i get my iPhone 4 i'll sync it back onto it, but i'm not hopeful that it'll work

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,487 ✭✭✭banquo

I'd say Daniel has made a small fortune out if this.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20 TheToast

In version 1.2 the scan button was hidden. It is only visible once an eircom network is in range.

In 1.3, an extra feature is added so that once an eircom network is ever seen, the button will forever be visible. Previously, it would never be visible when the app opened.

Any reduction in reliability or performance over time is due to people fixing their eircom routers.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 703 ✭✭✭SolarNexus

How this app ever made it past Apple's reviewers and onto the app store in the first place is beyond me, really. It's little more than a steal-my-neighbors-wifi app, and why the boards allows it also is... strange.

It turns out there is a bug in 1.3 that stops the scan button from showing. 1.4 should address this.

Reliability and performance in doing what?

Put the new version on the iPad (free as I already purchased it) and it works as good as ever...

Glad I saw this thread. Thought I imagined that scan button

The developer of this app claims that cracked versions give just a random string of characters instead of valid key. Is that really so?

1.1 and 1.3 work just fine.
No sign of 1.4 so that must be what he means :)

it appears to be transmitting the location of users now, available on a map.
