I recently registered with X-Box Live anmd got one month's free Gold status or mebership (whatever it's called). But now that the one month has expired, I can't register with the same user name for Silver (free) member use!!! Or is there a way around this? I liked the name I chose, and had built up a reasonable score and would like to continue with my original name. Any suggestions?

your account is brought straight to silver from gold however only gold users can play online with friends and such

You shouldn't be 'registering' again, the account is still there, you just don't have gold privileges e.g. online play etc.

So what can you do with silver membership? Can you play any online games? If not, what's the point of it?

i think the idea is you can still talk to friends and still build your gamerscore with the same gamercard . and what would be the point in gold if you could play games on silver and not have to pay 54 euro a year

You can get gold membership for about €35 per year. Don't buy off Microsoft, and it won't be so expensive.
