iPad availability in Northern Ireland for UK launch

I am toying with going up North on Friday to pick myself up an iPad. Does anyone have any idea what stores will be selling them?

I know that there is an Apple Store in the Victoria Square shopping centre but I have no idea whether they will have much stock. Also, are there any stores in Newry that will be selling them - the likes of Curry's/PcWorld/Dixon's or Argos?

thinking of heading up myself on Friday.
I think Dixons, Pc World and Curry's are stocking them aswell, not sure if they will have them on Friday though.
Will head to Victoria Square first and see how I get on.
I assume they accept a laser card from down south?

I doubt they do. Only the supermarkets do I think.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,322 ✭✭✭sham69

    cheers.
Somebody told me that they don't take cash?
I don't have credit card so it has to be cash or laser.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,441 ✭✭✭✭jesus_thats_gre

They weren't taking cash initially in the states but they do now. I am not aware of them doing such a thing here. Not even sure that it would be legal. I am very tempted to go up myself but I would be heartbroken if it was sold out.

Laser is a domestic ROI card only, however most Laser cards also double as maestro cards, which work internationally so would work in the North.

If you use you Laser card during self service checkout in Tesco, take a look at what pops up on the card terminal. It identifies the card as a maestro card and not Laser. This is because Tesco's card processing facilites are handled through the UK and so can't recognize Laser cards.

I think Carphone Warehouse will also be selling them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,742 ✭✭✭Branoic

Not for the first couple of weeks anyway. The company that owns dixons, pc world and currys has signed an initial exclusivity deal with Apple. Carphone Warehouse and others will be able to stock after that.

Anyone any idea's on how likely this will be to be available in store on Friday? Don't want to drive from Galway at 4am only to be rejected at 9:01am with a PFO we're out of stock.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,742 ✭✭✭Branoic

I do think they'll sell out, but given that they've had so long to prepare and get stock levels in place it would be really bad form if they sold out before lunchtime. I'll be in Belfast for about 10am, so if they're all gone in the first hour I'll be raging.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,742 ✭✭✭Branoic

    Actually, I've just read that:

    1) the pre-order delivery date has been pushed back again from June 7th to just "June"

    2) the store will be opening at 8am on Friday.

So I guess it's fairly likely they'll be selling out quite early :(

Better be there for eight lads :D

Oh how I wish I had the cash offhand to get one. Roll on July...

So I think my chances of getting one in Belfast/Newry on Sunday are somewhat slim then?

Someone has pointed out before that an irish Education discount isn't recognised in the North, so make sure and bring the full amount just in case.

Is it really student discount? A mate of mine is coming up to get one, and I have a student card (still a student) so might help him out and get it for him using my card to get him the discount.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,742 ✭✭✭Branoic

I slept better the night before my wedding than I did last night! Anyone know what the queues are like in Belfast? I hear the Sydney Australia store sold out of some models before 10am.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 703 ✭✭✭SolarNexus

I would be surprised if they completely sold out by noon, of every model, but Id say so that the most popular models might be gone by 10. Sounds reasonably likely anyway.

I'm on the train on my way up now, so I don't know about the queues, anyone?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 703 ✭✭✭SolarNexus

Oh about this student discount stuff. I'm told that none of the ipads in the USA were given an education discount. Iv got my card with me (republic tho) do I'll give it a go bit I don't think they'd discount a launch product like that

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,742 ✭✭✭Branoic

Ha, I'm on the train too. Race you to the store ;)

Just got mine, their overflowing with them. Absolutely no queues, very chilled. I might have to take back everything I said about them selling out.

    Edit:
I'd show pics but the security guard had me delete them :/

just back, got 4 between me and my mate for friends and family,we were outside the store at 7:30,about 60 ahead of us,in and out of store before 9pm,it was hard to see how much stock they had as they got the ipads from out the back, they ran out of camera connection kits in no time,we passed the apple store an hour later and no queue to be seen, very laidback to what i was expecting,id be suprised if they dont have some tomorrow as the guy i was speaking too was very confident of stock levels

so what was the time stamp on your receipt? Just checked my emailed receipt there and it was 10:07. Did I beat ya? :)

For others interested I got a 32gb 3g. Was talking to one of the staff about stock levels and he said they were selling pretty fast first thing this morning but he thinks they've got enough.

It was funny looking at the staff. Most of them had been there working since 6pm yesterday and were either crashed and bleary eyed or obviously high on coffe or red bull.

Currys don't have then and only two PC World stores have them - Lisburn being on.

I picked up a 32gb wifi model in Lisburn.

What prices did you all pay?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 346 ✭✭denisor

Interesting accounts, may I ask if you used your Irish iTunes accounts to activate the device? , or are you doing theitunes gift card on uk account type thingee-ma-gig set up like the ones that arrived from the states?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 95 ✭✭jkb_dub

I'm just back from a quick trip to the Apple store in Belfast, picked up 2. There didn't seem to be any stock shortages. I was there at 6.30pm and while the store was busy, most people were playing with the demo models.

Who do they think they are? Ryanair?

That's the only other shower I ever heard of trying to pull that stunt. Can you pay for your iPad in cash if you so wish?

What is the possible justification for not accepting cash?

What happened to "the customer is always right"?

Going up to the Apple store in Belfast in the morning. Need to get my hands on one before pre ordering in July.

I presume there's no content on the Irish app store so no books etc?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,373 ✭✭✭Dr Galen

no the Irish Ipad app store is up and running, the bookstore has no paid for books, just all the classics/out of copyright stuff. That doesn't bother me too much, running the kindle reader already, and kindle for mac, so everything synced across to the ipad when i got going
