Hey, I was wondering if any ladies who have been to any festivals could help me because I'm going to a music festival in 2 weeks for the very first time!! I've avoided them this far in my life because I hate being dirty, like really really hate it and I've been scared to go because of the muck (sad I know!) but this year I said "feck it!"

So basically its gonna be a Friday til Monday thing and I was wondering if people could help me with how many items of clothes to bring and toiletries/cosmetics! I'm not really the no make-up kinda girl, Im really pale and need a bit of foundation to make me just an acceptable pale so I need to bring that and also my concealer because I'm paro about bags under my eyes because since having my daughter you can really notice them (disturbed sleep + early mornings = not good :P)

So if anyone could advise me what extra make up I should bring and some tips too on what clothes to bring

If you're gonna insist in wearing make up, I'd go for just the basics! Perhaps a tinted moisturiser, or a foundation compact, something that won't take mush effort to put on. After that, mascara and lip balm. Try get products with an SPF as you'll be outside for the whole weekend and might not notice yourself getting the sun. Sun cream for the rest of your body too.

Clothes wise, I think layers are always good, especially if you're gonna be out and about for hours at a time. At Electric Picnic last year I brought a few skirts and tights along with knee socks for later on. On top I had a check shirt and tees, then hoodies for later. Ditched the wellies and went for green Doc Martens ;) It was actually really cold at EP last year at night, so I was glad of my flappy ear hat! I also had a pashmina sized light scarf that could keep me warm if needs be, but also shield me from the sun when draped over my shoulders. I brought a cross-body bag around, enough to fit a raincoat, time tables, sneaky hip flask :p

Dry shampoo or hairspary is handy to bring hair back to life, with a little bit of back combing. I generally just scooped mine into a bun and stuck a hair band on! Sorted!

this is my check list for music festivals

loads and loads of socks - nothing worse then cold or wet feet.

    baby wipes

    fleece waterproof trousers and jacket

    tent
    sleeping bag
    toothbrush and toothpaste
beer that can be drank warm - bass or smithwickes
    disposable bbq
    gas stove
    coffee and long life milk
    sausages, eggs and bread
    hot water bottle
    empty 5 litre water bottle
    cup and plastic glass
    blow up mattress
    foot pump

no point in bring changes of clothes, towels or anything like that

OH EDIT ; a fold up wheelbarrow is a necessity - 30e in argos and a folding chair, they cost a fortune there and if you are old like me, after a while the hips cant take sitting on the ground any longer

If you look up Oxegen website, they have forums where people write their lists. Went last year and had a list as long as my arm, (so I would be here a week writing it down), but I did need nearly everything.
    Baby wipes are a must.
If it is on Ireland definitely bring rain gear.
And dont worry what you wear, most people wear leggings, or shorts and tops, and wellies and nobody seems to even look at others.
Bring basic make up,(in case you are camping and tent gets robbed) and waterproof mascara (learnt my lesson last year)

Hope you have a ball, I did last year, best weekend ever.

A wheelbarrow?! Really?? Jesus, I'm really out of the loop!! What do I need that for?!

    Dya's think clotheswise :

    Pair of denim shorts
    2 pairs of leggings
    wellies
pair of sandals in case the weathers lovely (we can all dream!)
    Im thinking 4 vest tops
    2 cardys
    a hoodie
    rainjacket
loads of knee high socks! and tights
and a hat of some sort!

Is that too much?! Your prob gonna say it is.....:o

Oh and Irishbird, I didnt even think of food!! Im scared of getting sick from the food at this thing...(I sound so high maintenance!!) I'm just a home bird, hate being anywhere where I'm not prepared for the elements etc!

Im gonna look at that oxygen forum too...

to get all your stuff from the car to the campsite, its usually a good walk away :)
Oh and Irishbird, I didnt even think of food!! Im scared of getting sick from the food at this thing...

i never buy food at concerts, it is so overpriced (and i spent 3 years working in food vans at concerts)

we always bring a few disposable bbq's, my friend brings her a small gas stove, we stock up on beans of beans, bread, butter, eggs, sausages, rashers, burger buns etc., i have a picnic basket with all plastic plates cutlery etc. freeze all your food and that way it will stay fresh in your cool bag.

long life milk though - we had an issue with normal milk last year - it wasnt pleasant:(

not that i think of it - toilet roll, suncream, a torch and a bottle of spray air freshener, so you can spray the portoloo before you go and and HAND SANITISER

There is normally about 5/6 of us going and we all arrange who is bring what - crisps are good too:)

clothes wise - i wear leggings and a dress thingy, a hat and warm fleece even the warmest days get cold at night,

dont bring any glass bottles with you, they will be taken off you at the entrance, if you are bring spirits put them in a plastic bottle.

are you going to oxgyen ? i worked at oxgyen for the last 3 years. do not leave anything of value in your tent, make sure you have your car keys with you at all times. do not lock your tent, if people want to get in they will rip your tent instead.

personally, electric picnic is my thing, too old for oxygen

That sounds about right! I know one of the girls said dont worry about changes of clothes but ... do!

I dunno will you need all those leggings and tights and knee high socks!! Maybe one of each to mix it up! and some nice big fluffy socks for night time..

also, the queue for the atm (if theres one there as there has been at oxegen) is crazy so have the bobs with you (bra or socks or somewhere clever!)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 166 ✭✭Ruthie_

Aww the toilets....I am not looking forward to that!! :(

Oh I'll need to plastic plates etc...

Whats that milk...it lasts longer? I've never even heard of it! Might just bring loads of cereal and milk and then have fruit and veg raw....some bread too. I don't think we have a stove thing.

Dya think that I'm bringing too much clothes?? We have a trolley thing that we can stick our bags on and our tent is very compact and light so happy days!!

I'm gonna bring dry shampoo and leave in conditioner but also bring stuff for a shower too because I need a shower to feel better after a night of drinking! Babywipes wont help me with that.

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 10,661 ✭✭✭✭John Mason

you will have a ball and everything you are worrying about here will just disappear and you wont even thing about. they are the best weekends ever and you will surprised at how much you dont care about anything and you will have wonderful stories about people having sex in the stinky porto-loos and loads of other stuff you cant even remember. stop stressing, pack what you think you need, and unpack everything, leave 50% of it behind and bring twice the amount of money
    Ruthie_ wrote: »

you will be q'ing for a min. of 2 hours for a communal shower with cold water:eek:

had this argument with my friend, the first year she came with me and she just couldn't go with a shower - she brought her towel, shower gel, shampoo, conditioner etc. after lining up for an hour and half she gave up :D:D:D:D

No, I'm going to Life festival....very excited!! I never wanted to go to Oxygen because of the rif raf you do hear about at it!!

Theres lockers at it so I'll leave my money in that and just take a bit out each day to do me!

Yea I was only informed of the no bottles rule today GRRR it had never occurred to me. Just gonna being cans of Coors light because I don't wanna drink spirits because hangovers + me - bed = hell!!!!

....Just realised how god damn high maintenance I am!!! :D

    Hahhahahahaha!!

They said online they're heated showers.....Hmmm!!

I'd prob queue for 2 hours tbh! But I dunno how many people will actually be at this festival, I don't think its on the scale of Oxygen. But I'm open to correction on that one, I assume because its not as long running etc but I don't know for sure!

Bring variety packs of cereal, and a tupperware dish, thats breakfast, bananas and nutri grain bars, and definitely taytos. Also brought tuc crackers, were handy when we got back to the tent at night.
Disposable bbq as said above is a must.
We bought our sausages and burgers to cook, in the shop on site and they werent that expensive.
If you drink vodka, a litre bottle fits into a sports volvic bottle very handy.
Try not bring too much fresh food, as it will rot in the heat of the tent.

I think you are bringing just the right amount of clothes, last year I felt I didnt have enough so brought a bit more, and never wore them.
Loads of socks, and remember even the slightest bit of rain makes lots of muck, so you will probably live in your wellies, make sure they are comfy. Have ones that are halfway up your calf and swear by them. 4e in penneys!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 166 ✭✭Ruthie_

Oh cool bout the wellies, my friend says she has some for me but if they don't fit I shall be hitting Penneys!

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 10,661 ✭✭✭✭John Mason

life - hmmm, dont know anything about that one :)

yes, the showers are always heated :D:D but it might not be as bad if it is a smaller scale venue

YOU WILL HAVE A BRILLIANT TIME :D

just going to go and google life now

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 9,722 Mod ✭✭✭✭Twee.

Wouldn't bother with sandals to be honest. Even if it's a dry weekend, there'll be dry muck, gravel and people in boots and wellies stomping around! Protect your toesies! Also, wheel barrow seems like a lot of effort. Back packs and spreading the weight around for the win! One of those upright wheel things might be handy if you're bringing a lot of crates of beer. Pack as a group. I took enough for seven nights camping at a festival in Spain in a traveling ruck sack.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 122 ✭✭Fenny

What you've got in your list sounds perfect, really. And you really don't notice the dirt so much after a day or two! As far as toiletries go, some deodorant, baby wipes, mini hand sanitizer, dry shampoo, and maybe some foundation with a compact mirror will do the job for pretty much anything.

Last year for Oxegen one of the best things we brought was a roll of heavy duty bin bags! Amazing how much use we got out of them... We used them to dry our wellies, to put rubbish into, as a 'welcome mat' so people didn't bring loads of muck into our tent, as a makeshift rain poncho for when we lost those free ones. One of my friends even slept in one when she couldn't get into her sleeping bag! Good times.

Have fun at the festival! :)

Bring a Torch and loads of extra batteries for it..
cereal bars are handy thing and taytos..
bring empty plastic bottles, so you can fill them with water when you get there.
sunglasses, a hat, suncream, a decent sleeping bag..
    hand sanitiser.
a camping chair is also nice to have so you can sit outside your tent at night..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,443 ✭✭✭ams

I would bring a change of clothes - not for fashion as such but you have to think of the worst situations like having a mishap in the portaloo or someone pushing you down into muck!! I usually bring a couple of dresses that fold up small and leggings for warmth underneath if its gonna be cold. Tracksuit bottoms are good to sleep in as its usually cold at night in the tent.

If you really need to wash your hair you could do it with a bottle of water as long as you don't need to style it afterwards. To be honest its probably not worth the hassle though!!

I used to do the whole food thing but now I usually bring something I can eat for breakfast and then just buy a burger later on. I know its more expensive but it can be hassle carrying loads of stuff. A six pack of crisps will not go a miss though!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,577 ✭✭✭StormWarrior

Earplugs, lilo/matress, sunblock, waterproofs, wet wipes, toilet paper, painkillers (just in case), food/drink, more money than you think you'll need and somewhere to hide it like a money belt, a lock for your tent, phone and charger (most festivals have somewhere to charge it).

Clothes wise I always just bring a pair of sandals (I disagree sandals are vital for festivals but make sure they're sturdy ones, they're the only shoes barr wellies that it's not too uncomfortable to get damp in and you'll regret it only having runners or wellies in the blazing heat believe me) and wellies. Bring a raincoat. Lots and lots of socks. baby wipes and face cleansing wipes. Disinfectant hand cleanser. Disinfectant dettol style wipes for the portaloos. Lots of bog roll.

Oh god a wheelbarrow is a great investment I got a fabric fold up one from a garden centre a few years ago and everytime I bring it to a festival people are like aw wish I'd thought of that! You feel great arriving at your spot after the long hike and not having had to carry any bags. It usually means you only need to make one trip from the carpark to the campsite too.

Life is awesome, much smaller and less commerical than the others. Wish I could make it this year had an amazing time the other years. Music is mainly just sh*te psy-trance but the buzz is great regardless. Loads of savage stuff to do like workshops and clothes/jewellry stalls in the woods, skinny dipping (in the Gort one anyway), space hopper races etc They also had that crazy beer for sale that is about 8% or something like that. Expect plenty of old ropey crusty-punks and ditzy new rave teenagers at it though. I think you'll prob end up using the woods for pees more than portaloos at LIFE seeing as it's quite a small festival it wasn't bariccaded in last time at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 408 ✭✭Unregistered39

I second, third and fourth the earplugs. All the makeup in the world isn't going to help if you go three nights on no sleep at all. The best thing I have is a head torch. Great for the portaloos at night and seeing your way around your tent. You can get them for less than a fiver and Lidl and Aldi often do them.

I have previous experience with Portaloos unfortunately! So I know what to expect but still not looking forward to it! I'll suss out how the venue is and will use the bushes if the loo's are gross!

What type of sandals would you suggest? All of mine are pretty dainty, more kinda beach stuff etc apart from my gladiator ones.

And we have a trolley type thing for the bags, I dunno how many bags will fit on it but I'm just gonna have my gym bag, bit of food and my cans. But I know my mum has a foldable wheelbarrow somewhere so if needs be I'll bring that.

Yeah the main people music wise is Ricardo Villalobos (5 hour set on Saturday afternoon :D) and Frequency7 and then the rest of the time go where the wind takes me!

And oh my god 8% beer?! I would actually die! I'm a lightweight, tipsy on my second pint these days!!

I definitely want a head torch. And we're gonna get a little wind up lantern thing from Tesco, its good enough! Earplugs never fit me. My ears are too small or something! I'll have a look tho cos I'm a weirdo when it comes to going asleep, I need total silence.

    I'm getting really excited now!!

Yea thats a good idea, thanking you! My hair is fine, I usually just let it dry naturally and it gets a nice wave in it. I think theres nothing to freshen you up after a late night drinking like washing you hair!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,057 ✭✭✭Sapsorrow

Ehm well I'm picking up a pair of leather ones with quite thick leather straps, just not flip flops or mules (you want an ankle strap for sure) or anything with really flimsy straps beacuse you'll be walking on uneven ground and grass, dancing and having people stand on your ankles when you're dancing.

These are the ones I'm getting: http://www.schuh.co.uk/brown-schuh-keira-woven-ankle-strap/1709086020/

Obiously not the most sturdy pair of sandals ever but I've wanted them for ages and they should do me fine for the one I'm going to.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,590 ✭✭✭Pigwidgeon

Whatever you do, don't forget toilet paper or baby wipes. Probably two of the most important things, and hand sanitizer.

Oh and black bags. They have so many uses, if your rain jacket rips you can make it into a poncho, if your tent has a hole, just stick it over, if it's heavy rain put your stuff in them to stop it getting wet, you can sit on them, you really will be surprised how many uses for them you'll have.

Try not to stress about it too much, people always look a mess at festivals after the first day so just go with whatever. Make sure to have long socks if you're wearing just shorts though, I've found my wellies can rub against my leg and cut them. Makes it very uncomfortable.

Life is at Belvedere House, Mullingar June Bank Holiday weekend. Plan for all eventualities. Weather maybe great or crap. Here is a basic list of requirements: You will def need loo paper, baby wipes, deodrant, brush, shampoo & conditioner in one, hand sanitizer, ear wax cleaners, torch, ear plugs, wellies, raingear, rainpants, maybe a poncho which can also be used as a ground sheet, 6 pairs undies, 2 bras, 3 pairs of jeans ( in case you get one pair wet and puke on over another pair), tops, plenty of socks ankle and calf, cardi for those chilly evenings, rain hat, sun hat, sunblock.
Don't bring your best watch, rings, bracelets.
    Condoms. Well you never know!!

In terms of make up, I would stick to the absolute minimum, going to couple
of festivela this summer new look have a collection for festival wear. I bought some
clothing from their range, It's great and very practical.

I was at Benicassim a few years ago, so bloody hot! Get a hat of some kind definitely. I went for a straw Panama myself ;) I burn so easily, so apart from gallons of water and factor 40, I had a few linen shirts that I could throw on over a vest top and shorts, or buttoned and tied up cropped. Shorts and dresses were best I found. And bring a hoody for night time, it may get chilly.
Foot wear is tricky. While we have mud here, there'll probably be dust and gravel where you are. I would stay clear of flimsy flip flops tbh. The amount of flip flop related injuries I saw was unbelievable! I wore Converse and Merrell sandals, something like these in grey. Not the hippest looking shoe, but my feet were glad.

I got factor 50. :D I'm not exactly typically trendy, I'll probably wear my 14 hole docs, no gladiators or flip flops here. :P

Make sure you get knee socks! You don't want the leather chaffing  I wore Docs to EP last year. They were brilliant.

Just trying to pack for the punk festival tomorrow and this damn weather's throwing my plans right off, don't know what to bring foot wise, sandals and moshing don't go well together as a rule (learnt that at sub-humans last year) but don't want to have to wear big boots either :( God dammit.

Whatever you do don't get the foldaway 'rainproof/windproof' jacket in Pennys. I got one last year for Oxegen and I might has well been starkers naked.

I brought about 10pairs of knickers and 20pairs of socks.

Earplugs! The one thing I forgot.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 113 ✭✭Micahelxcx

toiletries, loo roll, baby wipes, plenty of undies, socks, fleece, raingear and welles.

I am an awkward person who loves festivals (mainly Electric Picnic) but hates sweating/muck etc (yes we do exist!).
    Checklist as follows:

Headtorch; a must, carry with you when you head off to see evening gigs. Great for portaloos and finding your tent, and generally being handsfree.
Babywipes; again, a must. For numerous reasons.
Plastic bottle tops; bring two or three, because if you want a bottle of coke or water, the guys who sell it to you often take the tops off so you can't reuse them, so keep a few in your bag. Your mates will love you for this.
    Hand Sanitiser
    Suncream
    Rainjacket
Loo Roll and few packs of tissues
Mini first aid kit; plasters, painkillers, antihistamines, immodium.
Practicalities: Tent/Bedroll(you will be 100 times better off for bringing it)/Sleeping Bag/small pillow/Camping chair, optional. Remember to check your tent has enough pegs!!
Black bags, and I always chuck in a few resealable sandwich bags; great to chuck your phone/wallet into (in your main bag) if it gets very wet, which it prob will. Black bag great to sit on too.
Food wise; I usually only bring cereal bars and tinned fruit and buy the rest cos I tend to enjoy seeing as much bands as i can as opposed to BBQ, but again, it all depends.
Toiletries; the usual, but small. The showers at LP moved pretty quick, the communal ones that is. Bring mini sizes of everything and a small towel, or one you can chuck away at the end of the few days.
Make-up; Like the OP, I am more comfy with a bit of slap, but generally just go for SPF first, foundation, mascara and a bit of eyeliner. Oh and concealer. Don't overdo it tho cos you won't have much time to head to the powder room to top up! Oh, and a small mirror. I have never used dry shampoo but only heard good things.
Clothes; 2 bras, 6 underwear, usually wear leggings and wellies and layers layer layers. Nothing to bulky. Scarves are multipurpose; a must. Hat optional. Usually bring wellies and a pair of canvassy runners (converse) but end up wearing wellies all the time). Woolly socks from Penneys; these are great when it gets cold at night! Bring a few accessories, I always do, like some chunky jewellary (inexpensive!)
Other;I may go overboard here, blame my scouting background, so take what you wish! Earplugs: if you put them in correctly they should stay in. Money, Camera, well charged. Same as the phone. There are places you can charge if you really must so chuck in the charger in case of emergency. Spare contacts and solution. Pen. Whistle- not for blowing like a loser at some gig, but have it on you in case of the worst situation.. you're lost and no one is around. Sounds naff but it helped someone I know who had fallen victim to some drunken amorous twat who really really scared her.
AVOID! Novelty furry boots=wet soggy feet and legs
Umbrellas. Sandals in portaloos. Tri-colour flags. There'll be plenty and i imagine the giggers will know they are in Ireland. Leave valuables at home, and empty out your wallet of your credit card/extra vision card/boots care..whatever..just bring your ID and ATM card. So many people bring the whole wallet and lose all their stuff.

I gather Life is chilled out, a few mates of mine have gigged at it, you're pretty close to Gort too.

Best of all, have loads of fun, If I think of anything else I'll post.

This thread's been extremely helpful! Anyone got any extra tips for festivals in hot climates? I'm going to Hellfest in France and it's usually scorching

MOSQUITO REPELLANT. Seriously. Remember they bite through tights. And some comfy sandals. like Birkenstocks. And remember it will probably get cold at night so bring a hat! Also if you still must buy a tent try getting one deigned for hotter climates. I was at Roskilde in Denmark last year and there was a heatwave at the time, our tent had no ventilation in it and it was an absolute nightmare.

In terms of make up, I would stick to the absolute minimum

Yeah, fuck the makeup. Who on earth wears makeup to festivals?! Sure everyone looks terrible anyway, nobody should care!

    Wet wipes are great.

Chewing gum for a gammy mouth.

    Bring loads of socks!

I've spent 10+ days at festivals due to working at them, 4ish days is survivable!
