Sexy names

I've just been informed that a character called Bill can't be a sexy hero, because Bill is a creepy old uncle name.

Any ideas for a suitable sexy name for a 35-40 year old guy?

wow, can't believe I've referred to Charlaine Harris' series of Vampire books twice in a week, but the lead character's name is Bill, I belive (I know this cos the TV series is awesome). He's meant to be hot ... according to my OH. No, really...

I'll probably be drummed out, but I read a few of the Charlaine Harris books, and thought vampire Bill was boring and stodgy. Okay, he's pretty on the box, but on paper, I lost interest.

Micheal or Scott, both suit a guy of about 35-40, and they can be sexy, but it's not all in the name, Bill can still be sexy, depends what he's like :)

There once was a girl in my school named Jean Valentine.
Always thought names couldn't get sexier than that...

And if you're wondering, yes the looks matched the name.
Too bad I was too shy back then.

He's boring and stodgy on TV too, but still has a certain appeal.

I think you should rise to the challenge of taking the least sexy name you can imagine and making it work for your character. Algernon or Cyril maybe?

This is probably cliche - but what name suits the character? I have often started out with the name of a character and had to change it halfway through because he/she became anothe name.

Apparently thats the name of Lamborghini's latest test driver. So you know what role suits the name best!

Just avoid nicknames and abrivations. Anyone over the age of 30 is entitled to have the use of their full name and leave the childish shortened names behind.
    Bill should be William.
    Johnner should be John.
    Jim should be James.
Tony or (shudder) Anto should be Anthony.
Grown up names are much sexier.

    I'm older than Minecraft goats.

By 30 you should have a new middle name named after something you have done shamefully or willingly in your youth.
    Mick (Dove) Cassidy.
    John (Speedy) Murphy.
    Shemus (Classy lady) O'Reilly.

But Lando is a sexy name no?

I was tempted by Rick, but I have another character whose name begins with R. Also Nick, but when I checked, there are very few baby boys being called that around the time my character was born. So I went with Mike.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 35,739 Mod ✭✭✭✭pickarooney

Did you really want to rename him? 'Cause between Bill and Mike there isn't a massive difference in sexiness.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,503 ✭✭✭✭Also Starring LeVar Burton

    Bill's better than Mike...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 368 ✭✭ToasterSparks

    Bill sounds like an accountant.

And I hope Mike is a bit of sleaze, cos that's what I think of when I hear the name. He's so gonna cheat on his girlfriend or wife!

What about Matt, or the longer version, Matthew? I like Adam too. Daniel? Kevin?

There's a difference. Even with just the name change, his dialogue is slightly different. And I suspect I'll have to rewrite the chapter where he hits on a girl, he'd have a different style now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,183 ✭✭✭Antilles

He hits on women using variations on his own name?

    Like Buck? :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,183 ✭✭✭Antilles

Combine long and short forms of names.

    Michael + Mike = Mikael
    David + Dave = Daved
    William + Bill = Billiam

I'd read pretty much any book if the hero was named Billiam.

Mandy. He's tough because he needs to be.

Though somewhat influenced by the fact that Mandy Patinkin is a class actor that embodies a troubled soul carrying out heroic deeds.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,775 ✭✭✭EileenG

    Let's not get silly here.

Harvey is a rabbit. Jonathon is a seagull. Clifton is a town. Wayne is a dead guy with bandy legs. Nils is the butler/poof. Bruce is the wimpy side of Batman. Kane is obviously the star of a specialist porn movie. Adrian is a spotty 13 year old.

Alex, Kyle and Stephen, I'll grant you.

Oh yes, have to second this, Jack is strong and manly....Andrew is also pretty hot, and Sam...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,775 ✭✭✭EileenG

Sam, yes. Andrew sounds like he rides a polo pony. Jack might work, but I've got a very juvenile character who wouldn't be able to resist jokes about jacking off. And obviously, no Dicks, for the same reason.

How about old-school, old-money sexy, like Conrad or Sebastian?

If you go with Karl, make sure it's with a K - much more rugged. Same with Erik.

I once named a character in a short story Tedward, does that count? Also, Daved sounds like a great bit of invented slang.

"Man, would you believe how that guy daved me at the pub last night?"

Just avoid Jack. Its waaaay overdone as a hero name!

What about Rory? Obviously it's more of an Irish sort of name, so it might not suit your character, but I've always thought it's quite a masculine, rather attractive name myself...

If you are a red setter, absolutely. I have a red setter called Rory in my story. Had to get rid of the parrot. Bill would own a parrot, Mike would not.

    Hercules Rockefeller
    Handsome B. Wonderful
    Rembrandt Q. Einstein

    Or keep it simple:

    Max Power

I thought it was parrots that had bills?

Are you going with Mike then? Because even if he's sexy, he has a beer gut and likes to give the missus a slap and that ain't cool, people.

My Mike is an ex-Marine and is seriously buff. And he's single. So far.

Ex marine? So he's old or was court-martialled? :D

    "Dragon" or "Ironclaw"

    And you're welcome!

You could always complicate things and give him a nickname (maybe one he picked up in the Marines). Could be something to do with his personality, or an abbreviation of his surname (like Fitzy for Fitzgerald, etc.)

He's gonna leave big bruises on those girls he beats up!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,775 ✭✭✭EileenG

He's not going to beat up any girls. But he gets to fight with some big aliens. Lots of big aliens.

He's late 30s, served a couple of tours, now retired, but getting bored.

If I need a name for a dragon, Ironclaw it is.

And he's positive that none of these aliens are girls? There's a thought, does the marine code of honour extend to extraterrestrial species?
