13 year old climbs Everest

I could have climbed everest too when i was 13 with the aid of a jet pack or similar device.

Quite the achievement, at that age I was building my own Everest of used tissues!

I don't think he should have been let do it though. Plenty of hardened climbers have died on Everest. If anything went wrong I doubt a 13-year-old would be able to cope.

When I hear stories like this or the 16 year old girl who sailed around the world I think "meh, can't be that hard then" .

So thats why I haven't done either of those things yet. Not enough of a challenge !!!!!!! :pac:

I think it's pretty negligent of the parents tbh. He probably gets everything he wants, parents just can't say no. It's not exactly cheap to climb everest!!

Just kidding, but I can't see how it could be anything BUT dangerous!:p

Obviosly fair play- for a 13 year old to do this is fantastic but like all mountaineering, sailing, yachting contests for people so young , it is a challenge exclusive to a first world elite ie a dozen or so countries.

How can it be truly a world record when only a handful of countries compete. - Only x amount of countries could fund and indulge such a contest.
Its not like Cameroon had a team there. Also what about missing out on education etc

That was the point of my original post. :P
All the other posters were saying he shouldn't have been allowed do it, he could have died. I'm fairly sure his parents were aware of this. He wouldn't have been allowed to do it if he wasn't an accomplished climber.

Climbing Everest is so two centuries ago. I couldn't give a bollox.
His father climbed as well, probably minted, expensive hobby.

When asked about all the help he got by an interviewer afterwards, he replied "are you tryin to start summit".

    Where's my coat

If you have enough money and your fit & conditioned you'll get up Everest.

Costs a minimum of $40k, the Sherpa's do all the work, you just bring lungs and legs.

I'm sure hundreds of Nepalese kids have climbed Everest before.

They get pretty high some of those Nepalese kids, but it's usually glue sniffers in Kathmandu.
I can't see too many of them scaling Everest, tbh.

I think it's usually pushed by the parents - all this 'youngest ever' records. I think it's dangerous and the courts in Holland were right to stop the parents allowing their young daughter do something so dangerous as try to sail round the world single-handed. There was a documentary on TV aout a young English boy trying for the record - I think he held it for 2 weeks and was then over taken by an American who was 3 weeks younger than him. What parent in their right mind would let a 7 year old child fly?

i was going to do it after dinner back in the day, but then street hawk was on so i couldn't be bothered then.

It's not exactly easy either so I doubt it's some spoiled little twat who one they decided he wanted to climb Everest. My guess is the family is more than likely experienced climbers and this kid is just some extremely talented climber for his age.

Age is irrelevant here tbh, it's down to his physical and mental health / toughness tbh.

I scaled Everest the day I was born, hauling myself to the top by a bit of umbilical cord, but my parents were too modest to call in the media and brag to the world.

he'll be killed up there, the mad yoke. And then the family will get sympathy for this very avoidable tragedy. It'll be like the las who was eaten by the whale in disneyland

You could apply your logic to anything. The fact is, he's still a child and it's irresponsible.

Yes, and the real problem is other peoples lives are put at risk. Sherpas and rescuers also die.

    http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/sciencetoday/2009/0416/1224244802210.html
In May 2006 a climbing ethics controversy broke out when double-amputee climber Mark Ingles revealed that his and other climbing parties had passed a distressed climber, David Sharp, sheltering under a rock 450 metres beneath the summit without attempting a rescue. It was claimed that rescue efforts would have been futile and would have caused more deaths.

The death rate on Mount Everest has not changed over the years, with about one death for every 10 successful ascents. For anyone who reaches the summit, they have about a 1 in 20 chance of not making it down again.

A massive 'who cares'. Just in relation to the girl who sailed round the world last week, she won't officially be recorded as to disuade younger kids from attempting the same. Proper order!

You know, if you consider his height relative to how tall Everest is, he had to travel a lot further than most other Everest-conquerers. Not quite how it works, but still. :p

He also had to walk further coz his legs are shorter than an adults.
