OK. Next week my Impreza is getting a major overhaul. Clutch, engine and possibly gearbox. I didn't think I'd get bored of it so quickly but I have and now I'm looking to push it on when it's sorted out.

It's going to be hard to shift though because it only has part service history and 5 fecking owners!

I was thinking of getting a celica when I move on the Impreza. I know you'll all be screaming at me to get a GT4 or a beams and so will I but I think I'll leave them for another year or two.

I've been looking at the possibility of a 1998 1.8 twin cam Celica. Anybody know how these hold up?

If anyone has any better ideas then hit me with it. I'm not limited to a big saloon car or anything, I just prefer bigger cars.

I'm not mad about civics but if I came across a nice one I'd consider it. TBH at the minute the Impreza isn't nice to drive anymore at all so I'm open to all options.

    Musts:
    1. Petrol
    2. No cabrio's
    3. No estates.
    4. No skanger mobiles.
    5. Older cars I'll consider but must be a sensible buy. :p
    6. No bigger than a 1.8 and no smaller than a 1.6. If it's under a 1.6 I don't want it to be underpowered for it's size.

My budget will be roughly €3500. This is for the car. I have tax & insurance taken in to consideration.

My brain is melted so please help me! :D

106gti, you'd get a lovely one for that money and you will definitely not get bored of it!

Did someone here swap their teg for a 106gti a while ago?

Yeah p-nut had a teg type r and switched to a 106gti, don't think he swapped though.

I've a feeling the gti would be roughly same insurance as a beams.

I thought something like this this. Bit of poke in her, and reliability.

Hmmm. Within budget. I've a feeling my insurance wont like the 3 letters GTI, though. :pac:

What about a BMW's there's a few clean models going
    around at a decent price.

    or

Good rear wheel fun and you'd still have change.
Drive till your Impreza is back, then use the BMW as a track car.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,399 ✭✭✭Bonito

I was thinking of BMW's too but I'd want a decent example. I've a feeling a 318 would only leave a want for more, though. :o

A MK IV Gti wouldn't be much better than a 318..............there just as boring anyway!

Don't forget to tell them it's a RED i.... It seems to make all the difference when people are selling them.

    Volkswagen GTI

Look at all the red letters in that it must be quick!

Are you going to be trading or is going to the UK an option?

If you went to the UK you might be lucky enough to pick up an early Cooper S.

You'll have much more fun in a Cooper S than anything else that's been suggested. There amazing cars to drive and handle to well.

I use to own a JCW S (220 bhp) and it was unbelievable. Car just stuck to the road.

Even a normal Cooper would be more fun that anything else suggested.

Coming from an Impreza it's unlikely you'll be interested in going for a Mini but it'd be a serious buy.

OK. I think maybe a celica SR. What about an accord? Do they come in 1.8?

UK isn't an option. Is the S the supercharged 1.6?

I wouldn't say they're 'muck' but to say a normal mini would be more fun than 106gti is an awful stupid statement to make.

    Plus..it's a Mini :P if it's not a JCW then don't bother imo

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,399 ✭✭✭Bonito

OK. Contendors so far are a 106gti or a Celica SR. Anymore suggestions?

Be very hard finding a good one. Most of them have been turned into skanger mobiles and ruined.

May as well stick a Saxo VTS in there with the GTI as it's the same car basically and should give you more choice. 106 looks better imo though.
What about an early Leon fr? Some of those are getting seriously cheap

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,849 ✭✭✭Redisle

What about a fiesta zetec-s? Not as quick as the others but meant to handle brilliantly, something like this.

Very cheap to insure too (maybe not with the linked one, since it has a few engine mods)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,594 ✭✭✭Testament1

Toyota Levin. Great looking coupe, great handling, great fun to drive and fairly easy on petrol too. Plenty of em for sale at the moment.

OK. Contendors so far are a 106gti, Celica SR, Fiesta zetec-s. I think Levins have a loading but I'll check with my insurance company tomorrow. I quite like that Fiesta TBH. +1 only 45k on the clock. -1 it's in Cork and I'm in Dublin. :pac:

True but, I'd pick a beams over an FTO and beams are off the menu. 1.8 max.

Sorry i meant the GS, thats the 1.8 Model. Take a look at the FTO Ireland owners club too. So easy for parts and advice.

Definitely putting that on the list!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,399 ✭✭✭Bonito

Right on the list so far is the following.

    Celica SR
    Fiesta zetec-s
    Civic type s

    Anymore for me?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,755 ✭✭✭Midnight_EG

    Why not a Type R? ;)

You'll get bored with a Type S, VTEC kicks in ever so softly and it's just boring!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,399 ✭✭✭Bonito

If you can find one cheap enough that'll sub the extra in my premium against the type-s or the celica I'll think about it. :p

As well as insurance the type r is a 2 litre so is over the 1.8 limit the OP has set.

As a compromise the Type S are pretty nice cars

    not the ek9?
don't think he'll get one within budget though.

there's a cheap gti that's been up for ages, was originally up for over 3500 a couple of months ago I think

save yourself a ton and have more fun than you can imagine ;)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,399 ✭✭✭Bonito

Hmmm. OK maybe it is possible. TBH the last thing I want is to get bored of the car I buy. The cars I gave in the post above are just examples. I most likely wouldn't go for those exact cars.

    @EG - The GTi.

Yeh the ek9 is 1.6 but would be heavily loaded on insurance.

be worth it if you could afford it though bonito.

    Sir/Vti is another option

besides I think I'm going sensible and they're a nice cheap little car..might buy one anyway.

OK gimme a sec. I really need someone good with figures to work out exactly what I can afford. I'd only get a rough idea and probably wouldn't include everything! I want something I can comfortably afford and not have to struggle to keep it on the road.

    I'd recommend a 1999 onwards celica VVTLi (190 bhp) and 1.8l.

My sister has one and its a brilliant car for a fwd!

All in your mind! Or the Vti hasn't been well maintained/modded :p

10bhp difference is nothing on a public road, for the loading on insurance for the Sir import you would have to ask is it worth it.

    Fill this out:

    Money to spend on car:
    Money to spend on insurance:
    Money to spend on tax:
    Average monthly money for maintenance:

OK to work with I have whatever I get for the Impreza. Waiting on a cheque from social of back dated dole from when I was unemployed. That's 1,100. Then a week I'll be earning about 320 - 350 not including Sunday shifts/Bank holiday shifts and over time. ( I get €11.62 on Sundays and for over time and bank holidays I get €17.41 )

I live at home so my rent is only 50 a week to the mother! :pac: So taking in to account. From the way I take care of my cars. I'll want one major service a year and one interval oil & filters change half way through the year. This costs €180 for my service plus, I think, €60-€70 for an oil & filter change.

Then tax. That'll be whatever car I buy so between €450-€600 a year?

My insurance at the minute is €245.06 a month and for petrol, I do about 280 - 320 km a week. So throw that in with the MPG of whatever car I buy. Too many numbers for me to handle. :pac:

I'll go on to a Type R Civic/Integra for you:

Assuming you pick it up for €4000, it'll most likely have tax already, if not it's €471/€551 for a years worth. You'll want to be changing the oil twice yearly, as VTEC models need it this much, so do it yourself and factor in €45X2 or so for oil, depending on brand. Other servicing costs will only be your filters and windscreen wipers :pac: that, again, you can do yourself, which will be say €50. Petrol is alright during the week once you don't drive it too hard, so give €70 or so to that. 70(52) = €3600 a year on petrol, provided you top up each week. You should easily get 350km a week out of it, and I doubt it'd cost more than your Impreza!

    Maybe.

It's very tempting! I'd like a good aul vtec TBH. Seen a nice teg coming from the local Apple and back on to the M1 the other day. Going nicely and then the minute he hit the off ramp he floored it and you could hear her pickin' up and then roaring when the vtec kicked in. :D

The Impreza is shoite on petrol. TBH I'd say anything will be better. Last full tank I only got 220 miles out of it. This full tank I'm near the half way on the needle and haven't even reached the 100 mark.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,755 ✭✭✭Midnight_EG

With the one time buy off of ~€4000, I reckon 5k a year spent on the Civic/Integra including petrol and oils, you'll be a happy man :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,399 ✭✭✭Bonito

Well that's the only thing then isn't it. The teg or the civic.

I'd be leaning for the Teg, the torque in the B16 engine from the Civic will leave you wanting more, and B18 in the Teg will give you that bit more :P
