Talk about trying to milk off the Legend of the Galactic Heroes brand :P

So far this looks kinda weak, tbh, but HSoD looks good, if it takes a humourous angle (like Angel beats), my day will be made.
Also gonna check out Seitokai Yakuindomo, I think, but just cos I like slice of life's that are probably gonna end up in a harem...
Mitsudomoe = hanamaru kindergarten, I think, I'll give it a gander too *shame*

Of course, rumour has it Code Geass 3 is set for summer, this list is far from definitive!

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 17,137 Mod ✭✭✭✭cherryghost

IF Code Geass R3 indeed comes out soon, I would MEGA-ORGASM

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 945 ✭✭✭gearoidof

Well, it's definitely this year, which means summer or autumn (no one ever does winter).
    http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2010-04-22/code-geass-gaiden-bokoku-no-akito-project-announced

Autumn is probably gonna be great again, anime makers seem to enjoy clumping all their good shows into 1 season, it's a conspiracy, I tells ya

I think I got 6 or 7 on that list as preliminary to watch with one or two that I'll stick with no matter what. I need to finish up some of this seasons stuff quickly...

V2 of the summer line up is out:

    http://chartfag.files.wordpress.com/2010/06/summer-2010-v2-export.jpg

Got me a date for Black Rock Shooter, I'm very excited about that. As for the rest, I'll just see what the initial reviews are before plunging in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,798 ✭✭✭Funky

Pretty crappy season by the looks of things, I'll probably watch lots of it but at this stage I'm only really looking forward to Amagami, Occult Gakuin and Highschool of the Dead. Read the manga of HSotD and though the fanservice is pretty overdone it should be a pretty good zombie survival story. Maybe Legend of the Legendary Heroes too, the trailer made me think it's something like a shounen Berserk lite.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,823 ✭✭✭✭K.O.Kiki

The only passable series I see is Highschool of the Dead (which better be uncensored!)

And then Black Lagoon: Roberta's Blood Trail, Black Rock Shooter & another Mahou Sensei Negima for OVAs.

Yeah... think I'm gonna be playing more video games than watching anime, yet again.

    *edit*
    I take it back.

Cat Sh!t One (aka Apocalypse Meow) is now a must see! :D

They're showing it censored in the morning and then uncensored later that night, no idea if it's gonna be as graphic as the manga though, fingers crossed.

So far have seen ookami-san & Amagami-SS both seen good Amagami-SS is like KimiKiss and both have the same roots. ookami-san is good and reminds me of Toaru Majutsu no Index.

This Anime lists site is were the season list come from so check is out they don't do a version 3 the first version only include a list plus some pic the later one have release dates and the ova separate.

    Nothing wrong with coalguys.

I watched the Coalguys version, was perfectly fine. Sure they like their trollsubs and 'interpretating' things a bit looser but generally seem good in my opinion.

Good stuff, delivered what I was expecting. I like the manga and from episode 1 I'm pretty sure I'll like the rest of the anime.
It was freakin' glorious when the 28 Days Later music kicked in.

I have downloaded too much Japanese baseball games that i now have lower tolerance for trolls. The odd joke about picking up or dropping a series is fine so is the death of a team-member, but when you make false torrents that just too far, i do look carefully if it's a big file now but my RSS feed can't check for trolls.

Coalguys and commie will be our speed subs,
And we'll probably see a quality sub by the end of the week :)

Do people think the series has potential, anyway? Is it worth my while?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,258 ✭✭✭Numina

1st episode was decent enough, way too much fanservice for my liking though. For me, fanservice can mean 2 things. 1. It's there to distract the viewer away from a poor/so-so story, and 2. Cater for the demographic in order to potentially increase viewers/sales. The second option is understandable, especially in this market, but it can still grossly affect the quality/tone/atmosphere of the show. Now, I don't mind a little bit of fanservice, it's helpful sometimes in lightening the mood, but there's just too much of it in Highschool of the Dead which is probably the only part of this show that I'm disliking. There's just too many pervy shots of strangely shiny asses in it for me. On the gore side of things I'm rather pleased though. When it comes to the amount of extreme content in the first episode, it reminds me Elfen Lied, since the flagship episode of both seemed to go all out in order to give a 'this is what you're in for' type of presentation to its viewers.

Overall I was pleased with first episode, seems like it's going to be a pretty enjoyable series.

    Way too much fanservice.

The pace also seems to be plodding just a tad. We can see the resolution of a scene at the opening, but are left to sit through it just to get some more fanservice in.

Yea the fanservice is a little overdone but well it's a pretty much exact manga adaptation from a manga written by a mangaka who was primarily hentai artist. Fanservice has always been a part of horror/b-movies as well though.

I doubt the start of the episodes will spoil what's going to happen during the episode from 2 on though, this was how the manga opened too if I recall correct. Not sure how they're gonna pace it from this point on, at this rate there's no way it'll get to where the manga is in 12 episodes (though I'm not sure if it's only 12 episodes). Supposedly the mangaka took a hiatus to write an original end for the anime so the story might diverge at some point.

Anyone know if there's any decent subs out for HSOTD yet?

Coalguys are still the only one whose name i know that are doing it, at least so far. While i have said thy're bad, turns out i've been watching K-ON from them and the quality is good, so i take everything back the quality is good enough to forgive the trolls.

I must admit I enjoyed the first episode of HSOTD, looking forward to the rest of the series.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 945 ✭✭✭gearoidof

Ok, I think I've seen the 1st episodes of all the series I'll be watching this season, may as well put up 1st impressions

    continuations
    K-on!!
    Giant Killing

High School of the Dead (commie)
    ADB link
Ecchi zombie movie set in a high school
A lot of people have been complaining about the ecchi (fanservice/pantsu) but they seem to have misunderstood what this anime is. It's not a zombie flick with ecchi, it's an ecchi flick with zombies. If you don't like ecchi, you won't like this, simple.
I prefer anime without ecchi, but I enjoyed it nonetheless, I had a little bit of fear in the anime, maybe because I was watching it at 3am in a dark room, but the soundtrack was really tense. Characters all seem to be stereotypical, story is completely unoriginal, still enjoyable
    Animation: 7
    Sound: 10
    Story: 5
    Character: 3
    Enjoyment: 8
    Average: 6.4
tl;dr only watch it if you can stand ecchi

    Mitsudomoe (fffpeeps)
    ADB link
A teacher has to deal with 3 evil sisters in a primary school class
This anime is strikingly similar to Hanamaru Kindergarten. If you liked that, you'll probably like this.
It has some lewd jokes, but I didn't find it that funny really. They had the usual gag where they try to set their teacher up with another teacher...
I'll give the 2nd episode a go before I decide whether to drop it, but I'm sceptic
    Animation: 7
    Sound: 5
    Story: 5
    Character: 5
    Enjoyment: 6
    Average: 5.6

Occult Academy (Seikimatsu Occult Gakuin) (commie)
    ADB link
A girl who hates all things magical has to attend a magical university where she meets a time traveller
This has been the most enjoyable anime for me so far this season. The 1st episode only introduces the leading lady, a tsundere who dislikes magic (despite being proficient in it).
Anyway, it's good. good animation, good plot, and it actually seems like it might go somewhere.

    Animation: 9
    Sound: 5
    Story: 8
    Character: 7
    Enjoyment: 9
    Average: 7.6
    Seitokai Yakuindomo (ryuumaru)
    ADB link
A guy decides to go to an almost all girls high school and gets co-opted into the SU
This anime isn't so much of a story as much as a series of jokes. They have some good jokes, and some bad ones. They have a good few jokes along the lines of women talking as if there were no guys around (tampons etc.).
It was watchable, which is more than can be said of the tripe I'm not gonna bother reviewing here. A good few laughs, but I wouldn't even notice if it was dropped by the subbers.
I like the characters a lot, to be honest, not because they're deep, just because they're funny ideas, Shichijou Aria is pretty much taking the piss out of Orihime

    Animation: 7
    Sound: 5
    Story: 2
    Character: 9
    Enjoyment: 9
    Average: 6.4

gearoidof you gave Seitokai Yakuindomo a 9 for characters? it's just a harem anime, there not characters, just set types.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,798 ✭✭✭Funky

Haven't watched Mitsudomoe but HotD was much better animated than the other two, in my opinion. Yakuindomo felt like a poor-man's Seitokai no Ichizon with forced sex jokes to me. Occult Academy could be pretty good, tis nice when there's an original story that can't be spoiled on forums.

Ookami-san is one of the others I've watched this season, character designs are a mix of Toradora and Index/Railgun. Not so sure about the story as of yet, generic tsundere girl and wimpy protagonist.

I ended up watching it on AnimeFreak and didn't catch who subbed it, but whoever did it did a pretty decent job, as far as I can tell. :p

@Varik, ya, but I liked those set types enough to warrant it, (I actually just wanted to bump up the average and couldn't really put the extra point anywhere else without the story being better)

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 17,137 Mod ✭✭✭✭cherryghost

I honestly don't see how you can judge so precisely after just one episode of the show. Personally, it takes me 3/4 episodes to gain an in-depth judgement of the characters and the plot that revolves around them. 22 minutes to be nitpicky about the plot and characters seems a bit too much tbh.

Annnnywho, I quite liked HSOTD, but again, we'll see 2/3 episodes in. I remember starting Honey and Clover, I was about to give up on it til episode 4, when it picked up momentum. The rest of the show carried on excellently, and is one of my personal favourite series' now

Sure what harm trying them anyway, that's my motto :pac: I usually do that until 3 episodes in, and whittle down to 2/3 series' that I enjoyed the most

On another note. Strike Witch 2 is being aired tonight, enjoyed the first one so hopefully will emulate the first series

Do you know the price that the DVDs and Blu-ray of that, it was announced Japan recently, i thought they might get a few high priced ova and such but in general it be lower than here.

The Blu-ray limited edition (and there is no normal Blu-ray edition) is to retail at ¥9,240, whilst the lowly DVD can be had at ¥7,665 limited and ¥6,090 for the peasant edition. There are 6 discs in total, suggesting 12 episodes for the series when they get 2 episodes a disc.

    Blu-ray limited edition ¥9,240 = €82.34 = 2 episodes
    DVD limited edition ¥7,665 = €68.31 = 2 episodes
    DVD normal edition ¥6,090 = €54.27 = 2 episodes

It's kinda sad that the Japanese have to pay so much then we can get (well not this rubbish) box sets of whole series for less.

1 series slipped under the radar it seems:

    Check out ookami san (mazui
Ookami-san to Shichinin no Nakama-tachi (Mazui)
    ADB link
Schoolyard favour doers from stopping bullies to setting up romances
So, this anime is about a tsundere who beats guys up, simply. She helps out people who come to her looking for favours, with the intent of calling these favours in in future. This is part of an organisation. Her internal weakness is discussed in the 1st episode, there's a guy who declares his love for her, protects her, all seems very gallant til it turns out he has ophthalmophobia (don't look at me-ism).
I like this, but I haven't quite gotten why. It's a well made anime, worth watching, but not exactly worth going out of your way to watch.
Okami means wolf, by the by.
    Animation: 8
    Sound: 6
    Story: 8

What's wrong with the sound, the seiyuu are well chosen and fit as well as a decent narration, well at least for this type of anime. i say it was a 7 at least or maybe an 8.
