Boston Marathon 2011 Registration

Not sure if this has been posted already, but registration for Boston 2011 opens on 18th October 2010. Nothing too significant in that, but its likely to sell out pretty quick, given that it sold out fast last year, the ash cloud may have stopped a few people travelling from Europe etc etc.

So, what I am saying is that those using Dublin, NY marathons to try qualify for 2011 should be okay, but no harm bearing it in mind that an earlier BQ marathon may be worth considering.

Thanks for the heads up, it's good to know. My (hopefully!) BQ (Baystate Marathon) will be on the 17th Oct, so I'll be logging on at 9am the next day :D

As far as I know you are still allowed to provide your BQ time after signing up as long as you run it before the cut-off date (in February or March)

I'm considering doing this one in 2011. Loved it the first time I did it. Are there many boardsies considering the trip?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,550 ✭✭✭plodder

I'd love to do it ... if I don't get into London next year (quite likely) and if I qualify from Dublin this year (somewhat less likely).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,442 ✭✭✭Condo131

I'm planning on doing it too! It'll be my first foreign marathon and 21st in all.

Fingers crossed that I make qualifying time in Dublin - should do - it's 3:45 for me (M55). Hoping to do 3:20 or less in october - fingers crossed/good luck charms out/weather/injury free, etc

Yeah I'm looking to do it (I think...)

I've decided to push a bit harder on the tris this year and have entered the Lost Sheep hIM. Having only done sprints and one Olympic before I'll need to do some serious stepping up on the swim/cycle side. So much so that I won't get the exclusive running focus from early August on that would be needed to do DCM 2010. Assuming injury stays away the season will probably end with Cork-Cobh on Oct 3rd.

So it looks like Spring 2011 will be my next go at a marathon. I BQ'd at DCM 09 and Rotterdam 2010 so what more reason do I need? :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,049 ✭✭✭Brianderunner

I'll do it if i get the qualifying standard at the DCM this year, 3'10 will be tough, shame theres no half marathon standard that gets you in like there is in NY.

Are you serious - that would be great. From what I can see, the website is a bit grey on that one though. Thats handy to know if that is the case! In any event, mark the 18th October in the diary to register.

Am hoping to do it myself. :D

May be an idea for mods to move this over to the ART Events page if this becomes a Boston Marathon 2011 discussion?

    HI Christeb,

Im thinking of doing the Baystate too! Havent decided between it and the one in Hartford Conneticut yet but I'll more likely go for the one in Lowell as I live in Boston. Not hoping to qualify for Boston just yet (it'll be my marathon debut) but good to know that there's another boardsie doing it too!

Hilarious - I actually just registered last night! The marathon itself isn't supposed to be the most scenic, but it's fast and everyone seems to be really friendly. I'll be there with a couple of buddies, one is doing the mara and one is doing the half.
    Might see you there!

I'm serious, but I'm not sure. I know you definitely can send them an IMPROVED BQ time after sign-up, in which case they bump you up to an earlier coral. I'm not entirely sure if you can supply a first BQ time after sign-up.

An email to the organisers would clear that up in case you really want to know.

I wouldn't be so sure, shels4ever. Once you get under your 1:30 half target, it opens the door to a 3:10 marathon attempt, according to McMillan and other such calculators.

I'm really hoping to do Boston next year but it all depends achieveing the BQ in DCM - 3.20 for me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 157 ✭✭altercor

Hey guys..I was jsut researching Boston myself today..Im in the male 18-34 cat so a bit of work to do to make the 3:10 time. I'm at 3:20 now after 4 marathons (only one seriously trained for!)..

I'm trying to find out what marathons in Europe are accepted for qualifying times. Been looking at Florence Marathon in November. Seems flat and quick.

Anyone know what races are accepted?? Must one do another of the majors?

unless they've changed the criteria since I last looked at it, any officially measured marathon will do.

Ya, i know a guy who missed out on Boston Qual in the Dublin Marathon in October, so did Florence as a backup and yes it's supposed to be pretty quick.

Think the marathon needs to have some sort of certification (be that Boston specific or other type of certification, I dont know) in order to be a boston qualifier. I'm not sure if eg Longford would have the necessary criteria. I'm really not too sure about this tho, i had only done some small bit of research. Otherwise i'll bow to Hunnymonster's superior knowledge. Never argue with someone who can run the length of Ireland.

Perhaps Boston Marathon website may have a list of suitable races.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,558 ✭✭✭Peckham

    From Boston Marathon website
For a complete list of certified courses in the U.S.A. check USA Track & Field.
    In Canada check Athletics Canada.
For international races check Association of International Marathon and Road Races.

The qualifying races most frequently used are listed below.
Please note: This is not an all-inclusive list. All qualifying races must be certified.

Dublin is on the AIM (Association of International Marathon) list, as is Portumna and the Galway City 50k

don't forget you have the 59 seconds i.e. the 3:10ers can use 3:10:59 chip time :-)

Anyone, particularly those who have done Boston before, got suggestions for Hotels?

My club is looking at Boston as its 2011 away trip. So far, about a dozen have expressed serious interest.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,365 ✭✭✭hunnymonster

i've no direct experience as I stay with Family when I do Boston marathon. However, Boston is not bad for getting around and the late start time of the marathon means public transport is a real option. There is a hotel right at the finish, is it the hilton and the buses go from Boston Common on the morning of the race so the back bay / tremont street sort of area would be very central. if there are a group of you going, I usually hire an apartment in the USA via www.vrbo.com and you get some great condos for next to nothing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 389 ✭✭RAL3

    Condo,
    have'nt done Boston yet but its my ultimate goal (hoping next year if DCM goes well) but lived there for a few years and in subsequent visits have used this agency for apartments;
    http://www.boston-bnbagency.com/
Hotels around the Back Bay area, where finish is, are fairly pricey. This crowd have very good quality apartments catering for various numbers located around the same area.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,340 ✭✭✭TFBubendorfer

I stayed with friends last year so can't tell from personal experience, but from what I've heard, renting a hotel room during the marathon weekend is a) pricey and b) difficult because of sheer demand. No surprises there, really.

As for getting to teh starting line, I would not even consider anything but the school buses from Boston Commons, but make sure you use the toilet before boarding. The trip to the start line takes an hour and the queues at the other end are long and slow!

Hope to run it myself next year if I get my act together.
I was still surprised by how high the rates were.
This gives an indication of what you will pay for a cental location, there obviously being cheaper options if you are prepared for a bit of hassle.
There is a agency mark-up here but I cross-checked against expedia and it's not huge.

Honestly, there is no need to stay centrally. I was staying at a house miles away from the centre but catching a subway train (the 'T') into town was quick and easy. As long as you're reasonably close to one of these lines, that will do perfectly.

Likewise, got my BQ at the weekend. Who else planning a trip for April?
I'm interested to hear any thoughts on hotels etc? Any advice (other than advice on the course itself, which I'll worry about in due course!).

Book early and make sure you're close to one of the T-line stops. It doesn't need to be central as long as you can get to a T easily.

Start worrying about the course sooner than later. Run a lot of downhills, and then run some more.

Lived there for 16yrs, and ran it 3 times, so listen up ................... DON'T DO IT :eek::eek: .................. :D

As its a point to point race, it goes through 7 towns. You will be bused out from the finish area (Copley Sq) to Hopkinton. The closer your hotel is to town, the more expensive it'll be. You could get one cheaper in Natick for example which is excessible by the commuter rail.

Have to agree about the course, I would definitely do a good programme for it, 18wks anyway, and lots of hills up & down.

I plan to do it again in April, just have to get the small matter of the DCM out of the way first

I ran Boston in 2007 and again last April. It's my second favourite marathon after London.
In 2007, I had reached the 22 mile point and wondered where heartbreak hill was. Hills aren't a problem in my opinion.
The "worst" part of the whole thing is the school bus journey from the finish area out to the start. Nevertheless, when you reach the start, you wait in their runners village where you can eat your fill and have plenty of water and electrolyte. Lots of loos too.
    Definitely recommended.

Do you think leaving it to the Florence Marathon on 28 November would be too late for entry?
Still recovering from injury and I don't want to risk Dublin but I should be OK by end November.

Going by last year, that would be too late.

Well, looks as if I'll be travelling alone (wife cant make it, not sure if friend in ireland who also qualified will make the trip in 2011), so have booked a hostel in downtown Boston. A hostel you say... rough night's sleep... maybe... but its close to the finish line, centrally located, cheapish, a reputable hostel and i have a bit of marathon experience that i should manage okay.

Also potential to meet some boardsies for pints !!??

Also, it only works out at something like EUR 30 a night, so gonna do the sat, sun and mon night. Bus to Buffalo from Toronto (significantly cheaper flight, 2 hrs bus trip only), 1.5 hr flight to Boston then ... game on!

Questions: does anyone know how much the marathon costs (ie entry fee) and also, what do you need for registering - how to prove you've got your time? Or do they investigate that. Any other weird requirements?

The marathon is expensive, no doubt about that. It cost me about $150 last year.

As regards to your qualification time, you will have to tell them at which marathon you ran it, give them your name and race number and they will check the race results. Yes, they do investigate that, and if they do not accept the race (e.g. if the course was not certified) than you're out of luck.
    Killerz wrote: »

Not really, but bring your passport to registration when you pick up your number. They usually check that as well.

Cheers. Course i got my time on is certified, and i got my BQ time, so no issues with that.

i've found the baa page not too great for info re prices etc...

Anyhow-will work out the finer details when registering

    Congrats!
Don't worry about the hills ... worry about the downhill first half instead. By mile 15 I thought my quads were about to explode, and that was still before the first hill.

Although I'm as bad, a reminder came up on my phone earler about it :D

I think I can use my '09 DCM to enter, but I'm not 100% sure. I did that when I was 44yrs old, it wouldn't have got me in then. I am now 45 so it will get me in, does that count  ......... probably not thinking about it now.

Anyway, I intend to put any doubt to rest when I improve on last years time by 27 mins ;) , I just hope its not sold out by then
