You should do a poll - people are to pick the supermarket they shop the most in!

Tescos. I live near the border & they've dropped their prices in all the border counties quite significantly over the last year in order to compete with cross border shopping.

There's a Lidl & Dunnes here too, but both of them carry a fairly limited range of stock, so I don't bother using them unless I need a cheap block of parmesan & a massive bag of pistachios from Lidl.

Most of my veg, I get from the back garden & I get all my meat from the local butcher who is excellent.

Anywhere but Lidl and Aldi; there is just something about both that give me the absolute 'willies'

Is it the people, the products, the lack of staff to query etc. I don't know. I have tried several
times to shop in these places and each time I walked out empty handed. Never again!

I will stick with Dunnes mostly. Customer service and all around better display and choice.

Dunnes for the Mon-Fri shop. I'll usually visit the local market on a Saturday for some nice fresh produce and make an effort with the cooking on the weekend.

I would support my local farmers market, but they had the bright idea of holding it on a Friday between 10 and 2.

I was in Tesco last week getting some bits and bobs. Had to get some bin bags. Pack of 10 €2.04. Pack of 20 €1.00. Same brand. Gotta keep the eyes peeled.

    Spar, can't endure Supermarkets.

I'm more impatient than fussy and Supermarkets are full of irritating slow people. And they are boring and have too much stuff. It confuses me and erodes my will to live.

Besides you do the Supermarket shopping, carry it all home and then the food runs out and you're expected to do it all over again....next week...ad infinitum until you're dead!!!

    NO !!!!

Yes. I also do not cook! :o

Its worked so far....I'm not even dead!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,456 ✭✭✭Jev/N

    Superquinn, M&S, Aldi, Lidl

edit: Spar is a joke altogether, it was more expensive than even Centra on most things, especially on milk

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,228 ✭✭✭epgc3fyqirnbsx

Think Dunnes is the best price and looks wise, there's something about Tesco I really don't like.
Aldi is good for nuts and crisps and bars and that sorta shít

Aldi, Tesco and M&S are my favourites. Aldi for good quality cheap food, Tesco for the wide variety and M&S for when I want a bit of a treat.
I can't stand Dunnes or Supervalu, they have rubbish selection and are usually very expensive. Lidl is alright but it's as far away as Tesco is and I usually choose Tesco over Lidl.
I usually end up shopping in Aldi or Dunnes as they're the closest, I try to get as much in Aldi as I can and only use Dunnes for products I can't get there.

Their pricing policies seem to be set up to be deliberately misleading. I often find that the smaller sized products are cheaper eg., a 500g of basmati rice for say €3 when a 1kg pack is €6.50. I think they work on the priciple that most people would expect the kilo to be cheaper.

As you said, you gotta keep your eyes peeled.

Dunnes and Tesco, mainly. Sometimes Superquinn but it's not that convenient for me or I'd use it more for having the nicest atmosphere of them. Sometimes the petrol station ones like Centra or Topaz or whatever if I just need a carton of milk or bread etc. Even though they're dearer, the thought of going into a huge supermarket for just a couple of items is too much of a head-wrecker.

ever seen food inc? quality and cheap are two words that could never be implemented into the once sentence where food is concerned.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,485 ✭✭✭✭The_Kew_Tour

    70% Tesco
    20% Local shop
    10% M&S

thats roughly where I buy food. Tesco cause its decent prices and and its really has pretty much all you need. M&S is very good for the little treats and stuff.

mainly asda cos they are the best value
dunnes sometimes as they are the closest to where i live, although you have to watch the price at the till like a hawk.
    superquinn when i'm feeling rich!

not a big fan of sainsburys or tesco
hate lidl - it's even worse up north as it's not as popular so it is usually empty which is depressing!

Yes, and I don't mean their super cheap food, I like their premium products, they're much cheaper and better than similar products in other supermarkets. Stuff like parma ham, their organically farmed smoked salmon, all of their specially selected range is good.

    i shop mainly in dunnes.

sometimes have to go elsewhere for nice hang for the childs hang sangwiches.

if i'm poverty stricken i'll head to lidl and try and get whatever i can, cleaning stuff, milk etc.

Naw, I've never had any problems! They substitute items if they don't have what you wanted and usually it's fine, and if you're not happy you can just say so and the driver will give you the money for whatever they didn't have.

I go to Tesco express for day to day things because it's just up the road and I go to Daddy Tesco every week or so as it's only a 5 minute drive away. I really should get a Tesco club card!

Those cards are worthile getting - if you can deal with the "Big Brother is watching my shopping habits" paranoia (!) - we get vouchers once a month or so for around a tenner off a shopping trip.
